UQ moves across the Zooniverse
 What do you do if your research data are so plentiful, detailed and complex that it would take more than a lifetime for a typically small research team to complete the analysis?
For UQ’s Centre for Advanced Imaging (CAI) the answer was to join the Zooniverse.
CAI worked with RCC on a pilot project in collaboration with the University of Oxford to develop methods for CAI to make use of the Zooniverse to crowd source the creation of a ground truth data set from its images of neuronal activity in live zebrafish embryos. Read more

RCC introduces the Tinaroo Enhanced Access program
RCC launched a new program late last month to provide enhanced access to HPC Tinaroo for UQ research groups and individuals conducting high impact research.
The benefits of the new mechanism include:
- increased queue limits for single node jobs
- more flexibility with job array limits
- increased maximum allowed wall-times
- the ability to submit jobs to Tinaroo from Nimrod, a scientific workflow system
- exclusive use of nodes outside of the batch system
- virtualisation that permits using the guest operating system of your choice, and more. Read more

RCC helps to patch systems against the Dirty COW vulnerability
 RCC and QCIF have applied security patches to their various compute services over the last month to protect against a Unix vulnerability called Dirty COW that QRIScloud and other systems were exposed to. Most were patched quickly with no reduction in service to users.
Compute cluster Euramoo is currently being patched. Rather than drain the queues and suspend services, RCC and QCIF chose to do rolling patches to the compute nodes. Read more

RCC to deliver one keynote and two papers at SC16
 Four RCC staff and two RCC-sponsored partners will attend SC16, the world’s biggest conference on supercomputing, this week in Utah, U.S.
RCC Director Prof. David Abramson will give a keynote address to SC16’s workshop on workflows in support of large-scale science.
RCC’s Dr Minh Dinh and Dr Jin Chao have both had papers accepted for SC16’s workshop on extreme-scale programming tools. Read more

Open call for those keen on Library Carpentry funding
 The Library Carpentry suite of lessons, which RCC's Belinda Weaver (pictured) had a hand in developing, won the British Library Labs’s Teaching and Learning Award on 7 November.
The Library Carpentry community plan to spend the award’s £500 prize money to support a Library Carpentry workshop anywhere in the world next year, including Australia.

 The preliminary schedule for next year's Brisbane Research Bazaar (ResBaz) was published last week and the event will be even bigger and better than last year's. Registrations also opened last week for the free, RCC co-sponsored event. Read more

Seminar on Bayesian Networks shows strong interest at UQ
Prof. Ann Nicholson of Monash University’s Faculty of Information Technology gave an introductory talk on Bayesian Networks in a packed RCC seminar last Tuesday.
Based on this strong demand, RCC would be happy to arrange more detailed training on Bayesian Networks, and welcomes suggestions from researchers.  The world of I.T. opens up for an RCC intern
Year 11 student Harrison Ryan (pictured) recently spent an “amazing” week with RCC to gain work experience in operating and maintaining supercomputers.
Harry, from Brisbane’s Holland Park State High School, checked out UQ’s on-campus computer clusters and RCC’s state-of-the-art videoconferencing facility, and learnt about the software behind the computing. Read more

 Help solve city issues at CityHack16 in Brisbane, a data hack weekend from 25–27 November.
The Brisbane branch of global engineering firm AECOM is hosting CityHack16. The specific challenge will be released a week prior to the event and will be related to SE Queensland city-shaping. Read more

Tropical cyclones, climate change and the Great Barrier Reef
Chelsea Parker, a PhD student at Brown University's Institute at Brown for Environment and Society in the U.S., gave an interesting RCC seminar on Friday, 21 October about her tropical cyclone research. Her seminar was titled: The Response of Tropical Cyclone Characteristics to Projected Climate Change in Northeast Australia through WRF simulations and Pseudo Global Warming Technique.
