Reliefweb, 08 November 2016 AfDB approves US $1-million grant to finance nutrition campaign in Nigeria’s Borno State
Executive Directors of the African Development Bank (AfDB) on Friday, November 4, 2016, approved a US $1-million emergency assistance grant to support the fight against malnutrition in Nigeria’s northeastern state of Borno.The Nigerian Health Ministry had in June 2016 declared a nutrition emergency in Borno. The West and Central Africa Regional Food Security and Nutrition Working Group had called for urgent response by the international community in order to prevent the situation from deteriorating further. The AfDB intervention will strengthen the Government efforts with support from relief organisations such as UNICEF, World Food Programme (WFP), and the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in the northeast region of the country.
WHO Updates, November 2016 WHO and partners support measles vaccination in Borno State, Nigeria
Since 6 June 2016, health clinics in IDP camps in Borno State have seen increasing numbers of measles cases. From early September until late October, 744 suspected cases of measles, and 2 deaths, were reported from WHO-established EWARS reporting sites. The majority of these children had never been vaccinated against measles and most of them were aged less than 5 years.Disease surveillance data, backed by a survey done in the Custom House and Muna garage IDP camps in Maiduguri, shows that measles vaccine coverage is very low so there is great risk of an outbreak of this highly infectious disease in the camps."This campaign will ensure that those communities that have been deprived of services in this long-term conflict are reached."
Vanguard, 07 November 2016 NCDC releases risk assessment of Zika virus infection for Nigeria
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, has released a risk assessment of Zika virus infection for Nigeria. In the document, entitled “Public Health Risk Assessment of Zika Virus in Nigeria and Interim Recommendations”, the NCDC notes that the current epidemiology of Zika in Nigeria has not been well documented or understood due to paucity of recent data. The document which contains a risk assessment of Zika virus infection for Nigeria, and recommendations to healthcare workers and the general public on how to protect themselves from the virus, observes that the virus shares a similar vector – the Aedes (Steogmyia) mosquitoes, also responsible for other flavivirus infections recorded in Nigeria such as such as yellow fever and dengue.

President Mohammadu Buhari on Monday inaugurated the new five-star Central Hospital built by Governor Adams Oshiomhole.The Benin Central hospital was first built in 1902 with only 10 beds.President Buhari who is in the state for a two days official working visit said it is his third time of visiting the state to commission projects.Buhari noted that the hospital is the best legacy Governor Oshiomhole would be bequeathing to the people of the state.He said he was impressed with the hospital project as according to him, “it takes a lot of courage for the Governor to do what he did.”
Nigeria Today, 06 November 2016 Masari: Gov promises to establish Faculty of Medicine, Teaching Hospital
Gov. Aminu Masari of Katsina State says the state government has concluded plans to establish a Faculty of Medicine and a Teaching Hospital at Umaru Musa Yar’adua University, Katsina. Masari said that the measure became necessary in order to train more health personnel and promote healthcare delivery system at all levels in the state.The governor made this known during the public presentation of the proposed state Teaching Hospital, on Saturday in Katsina.He said that the government would make necessary funds available for the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine and the teaching hospital.

Four unregistered and alleged illegal health institutions in Onitsha, Anambra State, are now known to have been sealed off on the order of the State Ministry of Health.The Health institutions are God’s Victory hospital, and maternity, located at No 10, Ogigi Street, Off Isiokpe Street Ugwuagba Obosi; Cheznik Medical Diagnostic Laboratories and Research Centre at No 35, Utuh Street Awada; Denco Clinic and Laboratory as well as Angels of God, Hospital Complex, located at No 36 Mgbemena Street also at Awada.The seal off exercise became necessary following inspection of health facilities at Onitsha and environs by the Ministry of Health. The Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria, an agency of the Federal Government, has sealed a popular clinic in the Maitama area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.During an exercise that lasted for some hours on Monday, the agency arrested a practitioner alleged to be a quack radiographer.He is currently being detained at Maitama Police Station.The Head of investigation in RRBN, Malachy Ejimofor, said the arrest “will mark the beginning of a series of enforcement exercise nationwide.”
