November 2016 Edition

We wish everyone a great DECA month!

We would like to encourage everyone to be recognized for their DECA Month Activities by entering them in DECA Promotional Campaign.  Complete information can be found at http://www.deca.org/high-school-programs/high-school-chapter-campaigns/  Remember the deadline to submit your activities is December 1, 2016.

Membership

The rosters have been coming in; if you have not sent yours, please do so today. The portal to enter your membership can be found at: http://www.decaregistration.com/hs/Login.aspx

Remember – The number of qualifiers from each district that will advance on to the State Conference is determined by the number of paid members that each District has on November 30th.  Please take a few minutes and make sure that your check request has been submitted so that National DECA receives your payment by November 30th.

Chapters can add members until February 28th (But the sooner that they are submitted the sooner you can begin receiving benefits.)

Membership by the numbers, as of October 31st…
114 of our 156 chapters have submitted their rosters
8 are new chapters
42 Schools still need to submit their membership
6,413 members have been submitted

Welcome New Chapters – The following new chapters have already submitted memberships, and there are several others still in the membership recruitment process:

Center Line High School
Flushing High School
Goodrich High School
Grandville Public Schools
Lapeer High School
Oakland Schools Technical Campus SW
St. Catherine of Siena Academy
Van Buren Technology Center

Added Incentive for the Gimmie 5! Award Recipients:
To chapters that increase both their membership AND district conference participation by FIVE members, Michigan DECA will provide a $250 credit off from the District Conference Registration fees.  The process to receive this credit is simple.  All a chapter needs to do is to achieve the steps below:
The numbers needed for each chapter to qualify for this incentive credit have been posted to: http://mideca.org/teachers/incentivefordistrictregistrationcredit/

100% Membership – The foundation of a strong local chapter is for all marketing education students to be afforded the opportunity to become DECA members. An active DECA chapter recognizes that not all members are able to participate in conferences, but can benefit from local activities. In addition, membership in DECA opens doors to students for a myriad of scholarship opportunities, is impressive on a college application, and is the highlight on a resume for many members. Chapters are encouraged to have all students enrolled in marketing classes become DECA members – whether they participate in conferences, or in local activities.

The 100% Membership Reporting Form is required for your chapter to qualify for recognition in Michigan (the check box on the membership roster is not used by Michigan DECA). Only students in your marketing classes (not other teachers’ classes in your school) need to be members for your chapter to qualify for 100% membership. The form is due November 30th, and can be found on page 7 of the Michigan DECA Guide, or can be downloaded at http://mideca.org/teachers/forms/

Chapter Campaigns – we encourage you to participate in DECA’s chapter campaigns.  The top recognition for this year is the ability for chapters to bring up to 3 students to ICDC in Anaheim to participate in DECA’s THRIVE Academy. Information on the campaigns was mailed by DECA in your September Chapter Packet, and can also be found online at: http://mideca.org/members/membership/decacampaigns/

District Conferences

Important District Conference Dates:
November 12 – Online Proctor Registration Form Due
November 18 – Registration Deadline
November 28 to December 8 – Online Testing Window

A complete list of the conference dates can be found at http://mideca.org/conferences/district-conferences/

Online Comprehensive Testing for District Conferences - All Districts will test online, as in years past. Please take a few minutes to review the information on our website so that you can secure your testing dates.  We encourage you to send in your Proctor Form as soon as you have your Proctor and testing dates confirmed.  This will allow Ann to process your information before she has to process registrations for the 5,800+ members that will be testing online this year.

Registration information - can be found at  http://mideca.org/conferences/district-conferences/.  Each district has its own webpage with specific conference information, registration forms, and maps.  Please contact Ann Day in the office or at aday7@emich.edu if you need any assistance.

Bronze Merit Award Participants – Please remember to submit the names of your members that have completed the Bronze Level of the Merit Award Program.  The form can be found at http://mideca.org/teachers/forms/  We will announce their names at their District Conference.

Other Updates

Sports and Entertainment Marketing Workshop –The workshop will be held on Tuesday, December 6, at the Palace of Auburn Hills.  The registration Deadline is November 17, 2016.  After that date, registrations will be accepted on a space available basis and will be charged a $4.00 late fee per person. The registration form and additional information can be found at http://mideca.org/teachers/forms/

State Officer Candidates – Please encourage qualified members to consider running for a state office.  The candidate information and application have been posted on our webpage:  http://mideca.org/members/running/  The staff contact is Mike Parr, he can be reached at mparr@mideca.org  Candidate Screening will take place on Saturday, February 4, 2017 in Lansing.

MDA Challenge – Michigan DECA continues its partnership with the Muscular Dystrophy Association this year through our annual MDA Challenge. Last year, we were able to raise over $40,000, with 48 chapters reporting income to the MDA office. This year, the State Officers have set a goal of $45,000! We challenge your chapter to make a difference – if every chapter were to raise just a little, we can easily achieve this goal.

MDA and Michigan DECA will provide recognition for your efforts. All chapters raising more than $200 will be recognized in Spotlight on DECA and on our website. Chapters raising $850 or more will be awarded with a plaque on stage at the State Career Development Conference in March. To begin your MDA activities, call your local MDA office and let them know you are with DECA. To ensure that your monies raised will be created to DECA, use the MDA Fund Verification Form which is posted on our website. We thank the chapters that have already begun to raise funds for the 2016-17 year! The list has been posted at: http://mideca.org/members/mda/
