Sunday, Nov 13th from 1 to 4 pm
Sliding Scale (suggested $40) / participant – includes bookmaking supplies

WePressVancouver [at] gmail.com

Make a book: eight sections on cords, including endpapers, and we’ll complete the project with a cover. All materials supplied, but feel free to bring some fabric for the cover if you like (at least 8 x 12 inches). You’ll learn an easy and durable method for creating books of your own!

Space is limited and we are able to accommodate up to 8 participants. You are best to RSVP in advance via Eventbrite. If not all tickets are sold online, drop in tickets will be sold at the studio. Supplies will be provided (included in the price of registration).

Karen Ward lives in the Downtown Eastside and is an artist and activist. Her work often incorporates the stuff that other people throw away: it is a grassroots approach to art that feeds her political work, and of course vice versa. She saw her first letterpress almost twenty years ago, and did academic work on the history of printing and bookmaking. Much of Ward’s work involves using old forms in new and unexpected ways.

You can also pay by PayPal.

DONATE NOW

We are working to make WePress a sustainable and long-term place for gathering and art-making in the Downtown Eastside (DTES).  We have applied for more grants, are slowly raising money through our paid workshops, and are developing a social enterprise whereby artists, and low-income and marginalized people can receive payment for their work – for the workshops they teach, the knowledge they share, the artwork they create, and the community they build.

Help us make WePress a vibrant place of work and skills-building for both artists and residents of the DTES. by making a donation. Every little bit helps!

Japanese Canadian Vegetables and Flowers:
Haiku, Letterpress, and Printmaking

Sunday, November 27, 1 to 4 pm
Free and drop in!

In a special new series of workshops for all ages, participants will create haiku (3-line poetry), and use block printmaking to create artworks that celebrate the vegetables and flowers of significance for Japanese Canadians. Many of these plants were grown in family gardens in pre-war days, and in small gardens that families created outside of their makeshift shacks in the camps when Japanese Canadians were incarcerated during World War II. These plants were also grown on larger plots of land established in the camps.

From daikon to chrysanthemums, participants will choose a vegetable or flower and can create a haiku poem or use one provided. The short poem will be stamped in combination with a vegetable or flower block provided by WePress or that participants can create themselves (the completion of your own block will depend on when you arrive and how much time you need, but there will be pre-made blocks available for anyone to use for printmaking).

We are also asking those that have stories of Japanese vegetables and flowers from their own experiences and families, to please bring them to share. We are collecting stories as well as the artwork created in these workshops to share online.

This workshop is part of a series produced in collaboration with the Powell Street Festival Society and funded by Metro Vancouver
