Smart Images Newsletter
November 2016
Welcome
Mute Swan Cygnus olor - Cheddar Reservoir, Somerset, UK
October 2016
Welcome to my November 2016 newsletter and to all my new subscribers, many of whom signed up when entering one of my recent show raffles, talks or workshops.

This newsletter
combines my passion for nature, conservation, the outdoors and a large dose of wildlife photography. This year has seen many big changes in my life along with some remarkable opportunities to travel with trips to Ghana, Kenya, France, Hungary and of course lots of photography across the UK. In fact a few days in Scotland during the winter was one particular highlight as I captured some white-furred Mountain Hares.

Please ensure you add oliver@smartimages.co.uk into your address book/contacts to prevent it being spammed.

I hope you enjoy this latest edition and as always I welcome your thoughts so please drop me a line with your comments.

Competition News
Zoological Society of London - Animal Photography Prize 2016

Following two category winning images in 2014 I was delighted to be recognised once again in the ZAPP Awards held at London Zoo in September. My image of Red Rock Crabs Grapsus grapsus was titled Hold on Tight and entered into the 'At Home in Their Habitat' category. It is even more rewarding to know that this was selected out of over 3000 images! Prints will be available online shortly.

British Birds - Bird Photograph of the Year 2016

It was also very satisfying to have been chosen as the seventh place image in this highly recognised annual competition. The presentation at the British Birdfair and hosted by Simon King. My selected image can be seen on my Stop Press page.
Photographic Workshops 2017

Mammal & Nature Workshop - May 2017

I am currently planning an exciting new workshop to photograph a suite of British mammals in Devon over the weekend of 27-28th May 2017. The workshop will include two nights accommodation on a beautiful farm, all food, access to a range of species, photographic tuition and an evening lecture from a mammal specialist.

Species include many terrestrial UK small mammals (e.g. pine marten, stoat, weasel, red fox, water shrew, house mouse, wild boar, otter, harvest mouse, mole, hedgehog, wildcat and beaver amongst others).

If you are interested in this weekend workshop with a day photographing mammals and then the following day exploring a beautiful valley then please email me.
Bird of Prey & Owl Workshops - April & November 2017

2017 will see me revisit the Hawk Conservancy Trust with two workshops on April 23rd or November 5th. Numbers are limited to 12 clients so book early to avoid disappointment. The April date incorporates spring flowers and the November date coincides with beautiful autumn colours and the chance of sunset.
Raptors & Owls
Photographing birds of prey is very rewarding, as each species is unique in its hunting style, physiological features and breathtaking beauty. At the Hawk Conservancy Trust I prepare all the sets and props and you will have a great time capturing some beautiful images.

We'll work mainly with British species including Barn Owl (below left) but occasionally use overseas species including Saker Falcon (below right). The day includes bird handlers, up to 7 birds, me as your tutor, lunch and drinks. Bookings made directly through the Trust.
Photographic Tours 2018
Eurasian Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia - Tiszaalpár, Hungary
July 2016

Following a successful photo tour to Hungary in July this year I will be running further tours in the near future.

As I have a big birthday next year and wish to do some independent travel, I shall be running tours during the spring of 2018 instead! I am hoping to lead two potential trips, one to Hungary and one to Spain.

The tours combine working from permanent, semi-permanent and mobile hides and take in a range of habitats including woodland, marsh, wetland and open steppe habitats. If interested, then please visit my Photo Tours page for details (of this year's trip) or drop me an email to include you on any future tour mail-shots.
New Greeting Cards for 2016
