No avoiding the 'C' word!...

Our Trevena Cross BIG Christmas Weekends (and late openings - see below) are in sight – the first just three weeks away!..

This year’s three weekends (3rd & 4th, 10th & 11th, 17th & 18th December) are going to be a spectacular affair, with 50+ stallholders creating a fantastic Christmas Market (food, drink, crafts), a magical Santa’s Grotto (all proceeds to charity) giving our younger visitors a truly memorable experience, live festive music, fantastic shopping, wonderful Christmas trees, lights, snow, food inside and outside of the café, and a great day out for the whole family.

It’s not all about upcoming festivities though… back to the plants…November is a good month to get more bulbs, like the popular tulip in the ground …And before the real winter cold hits, it’s still a good time to plant shrubs, trees, and hedging. Bare root trees and whips will also be in and ready for planting towards the end of the month too – a very cost effective way to add new structure before the winter sets in.

We hope to see you soon…at our Christmas Weekends or hopefully before, for a head-start on that Christmas shopping!

 Monthly Update...

Christmas at Trevena Cross flyer
1. Christmas is coming and the shop is ready. Our decs’ are beautifully displayed across the gift area with artificial trees really helping the Christmas vibe. Our ‘light tunnel’ is shining brighter than ever too, to help you make the most informed twinkly decisions – in the dark!

2. Shop, shop, shop – and pick up lots of wonderful Christmas gifts for friends and family in the gift department. It’s never too early to start the ball rolling, and beat all the later panic buyers! Pick up gifts for the home, the kitchen, for him, for her – even the little ones with our wonderful toy department for the under 5’s.

3. Planting can continue while the minus temperatures remain at bay, with shrubs, trees, perennials, bulbs and bedding all ready to find their feet (or should I say their roots!) before the proper winter arrives. Bare root whips will also be in at the end of the month for those looking to bag a great bargain on trees/hedging. Look out for more news on this later in the month.

4. Christmas trees will also be in at the end of the month, ready and waiting for you the first weekend of December… This year we’ll have a large selection of GREAT VALUE £25 NORDMAN FIRS, a massive price reduction on what we’ve been able to offer you a Nordman for in previous years. We’ll still have the popular Norway Spruce and Fraser Fir options too. Look out for more details a little nearer the time…

5. We’ll be staying open late on the FIRST THREE THURSDAYS of December, until 8pm, so come and join us for a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie – or a special late night winter warmer from the café, see our spectacular lights, pick up some fabulous Christmas gifts and enjoy a lovely ‘after dark’ festive atmosphere.

Café Latest

The café has shifted its specials focus from summer salads to winter feasts. A few adjustments to the menu are also in the pipeline, in line with what Garden Kitchen Café customers seem to favour, and want to try!

The café will be serving up its full menu, including Sunday roasts during the BIG Christmas weekends, and will also be tempting outdoor diners with a scrummy vat of chilli/veg chilli in the undercover market area.

frosty leaves

Autumn will be turning to winter soon – colder, wetter weather is becoming more frequent, leaves are still falling, and now the clocks have gone back, dark nights are definitely upon us!

There are still things you can be doing to help your garden this month though, including feeding the soil with well rotted manure or compost to improve soil structure and fertility in time for spring.

Be prepared for a turn in the weather too - if you haven’t got frost covers, cloches or DIY frost protectors on stand-by, now may be a good time to get your hands on some.

grasses

Our plant of the month for November is Grasses - they're still looking magic!

With 64 varieties...yes you read that right... here at Trevena Cross, the versatile grass comes in all different shapes, sizes, colours, species and varieties, but all offer great autumnal texture and movement, and look grand in the garden while other plants struggle. With many in flower, they also offer additional interest beyond their striking foliage.

Suited to coastal conditions, they are hardy and grow well in a range of well drained soil types. They also enjoy a sunny aspect so consider their sun loving nature when positioning them in the garden.

new cedar cladded toilet block
Two thirds of our new toilet block is finally open! – We’re just waiting for a long awaited handrail to be installed so that we can open the disabled cubicles.

There's lots still going on in the nursery, as we get used to the new heated tunnels and their impact on how our plants grow and develop. We're always working ahead in the nursery to have stock ready to sell on the garden centre, and we have some cracking stock being gently grown and nurtured ready for you in 2017.
