Anti-Bullying Week

Over the next week at school we will be working on relationships as part of national ANTI-BULLYING WEEK.

Bullying is an issue that is continually in the news. As a society, community, individuals and as a school it is important that everyone knows that we will not accept bullying behaviour. The children in our care need to have the self confidence to speak out but also the knowledge to understand what bullying is or is not.

Nursery and Reception will think about, "What a friend looks like".
Year 1 will look at, "How my friends make me feel".
Year 2 will think about, "What is fair and unfair?"
Year 3 will examine, "People say hurtful things."
Year 4, after the play they watched, will consider, "What is a cyber bully?"
Year 5 will focus on, "What is NOT bullying?"
Year 6 will examine, "What form does bullying take?"

Over the week it is normal that children will start to use the term "bully" more than normal. In combination with the policies linked below, please could you make sure you discuss the knowledge that the children are forming at school. While it is very important that the children understand what bullying is and what it is not - it is more important that they tell someone that they are unhappy. Teachers discuss these reports and we record them - however, children do not always tell us they are upset. We have a variety of ways for parents to contact teachers at school. The easiest is CLASS DOJO. Whichever method you choose, please ensure that any information your child tells you is passed on.

At CMPS we use our WITS - Walk away, Ignore and TELL SOMEONE. Please reinforce this strategy with your child. Sometimes walking away is hard but there is always an adult nearby to support.

On the school website we relay these messages from the Kids Health Website (link is on the school webpage below) to parents giving advice on what parents can say to children:

"You can do your part at home, too. Here are five smart strategies to keep kids from becoming targets — and stop bullying that has already started:

  1. Talk about it.
  2. Can you remove the reason?
  3. Buddy up for safety.
  4. Keep calm and carry on.
  5. Don’t try to fight the battle yourself."
We will be publishing the work the children do soon and we will use Parent Voice to take any discussions you need further.

Thank you.
