Big Names Arrive in Town to Join Summit

National leaders, ministers and senior officials have started to arrive in Marrakesh, with every participating country scheduled to deliver an official statement during a summit session that runs from Tuesday until Wednesday. But high-level representatives can also be expected at a range of informal side-events throughout the week. Following last week's outcome of the US election, the political statements are likely to include a bit more diplomatic fireworks than originally anticipated. Tickets to attend this week's plenary sessions in Marrakesh are reportedly in high-demand. The UNFCCC has prepared a draft overview of who will represent which country, an many countries appear to be opting for representation at minister-level.

EU Kicks Off Week With Focus on Energy

Europe's climate action and energy commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete has arrived in Marrakesh, and is set to represent the European Union at the negotiations this week. But first, he will open today's EU Energy Day, an all-day event at COP22's EU Pavilion. Cañete is joined this week by Europe's national climate ministers and a number of national leaders.

Cañete is also accompanied by his colleagues Karmenu Vell – the EU's environment, maritime affairs and fisheries commissioner – and Neven Mimica, the international cooperation and development commissioner.

You can watch a live stream of today's energy discussions via the EU Energy Day website.

Monday Tip →

If you are in Marrakesh today, the EU Pavilion is the place to be – and not only during the all-day energy event with commissioner Cañete. Interested in the role of knowledge and technology transfer, and cross-cutting networks in addressing climate change? Join this event tonight and meet high-level representatives of international innovation networks including Climate-KIC and the UN's Climate Technology Centre & Network (CTCN).

BuzzFeed Helps Bring Climate Innovation to The Masses

One of yesterday's BuzzFeed stories is providing a big boost to today's "Education" theme at COP22. The site – wildly popular with a younger audience around the world – is spreading the word about Climate-KIC's global Climathon. The event, which saw participants in some 60 cities around the world simultaneously take part in a 24-hour hackathon a little over a week ago, produced solutions to local climate change challenges. The BuzzFeed article focuses on the London-edition of the event, which targeted the city's air pollution.

"Let's Do Things a Little Differently"

Live streaming has been changing the way organisations and officials communicate at the UN climate summits. This year, a special Facebook Live stand provides a less formal setting for engaging conversations. "Let's do things a little differently," Climate-KIC CEO Ian Short told Daily Planet reporter Kelsey Hunter during a live interview at the summit. Watch the recording to find out what he meant, and how Climate-KIC helps accelerate climate action.

World Rallies Together in Face of American Uncertainty

When delegates at the COP22 summit woke up to the US election outcome last week, they focused on resilience. The low carbon transition is "irreversible," many said, and the high-level representatives joining the summit this week are now expected to make some bold statements.
In a first diplomatic shot across the bow, leaders of the EU-led High Ambition Coalition – which was instrumental in Paris last year – released a statement. “The Paris Agreement marks a turning point toward a more prosperous and stable world," it reads, pointing out that climate action is in "all of our national interests" and good for the environment, economy and national security. The statement ends with a commitment to keep working with the United States. EU climate commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete, and the climate and environment ministers of France, Germany, Mexico and Morocco were among those to sign the statement.

"Marrakesh Call" to  Donald Trump

The Moroccan hosts of the summit are preparing a "strongly worded political statement," according to Business Green. The statement, dubbed the "Marrakesh Call," would reinforce global support for more ambitious action to deal with increasing climate risks, Business Green reports.

"Bold action on climate change is a source of solidarity, hope and opportunity for current a future generations," a leaked draft of the Marrakesh Call reads. "The challenges and threats associated with climate change are universally recognised."

Business Leaders Asked to Talk to Trump

Some diplomats are wondering if fellow business leaders would be able to talk some sense into the US president-elect. Climate Home reports how one senior diplomat has business leaders on her "hit list in the next 24 hours" to ask if they can "open up a channel of communication" to the self-proclaimed billionaire. The diplomat – French climate ambassador and key Paris Agreement architect Laurence Tubiana – told Climate Home that Unilever CEO Paul Polman was one of her targets. “It’s a little early but they have a role,” she said.

It's Not Just The Climate

It’s not just climate change, COP22 delegates also point to health impacts as a key reason to abolish fossil fuel subsidies. “Spending $5.3 trillion dollars annually on fossil fuel subsidies is not rational, given the health impacts,” said Diarmid Campbell-Lendrum, a scientist with the World Health Organisation (WHO), according to a UNFCCC tweet.

“If spent on renewables research, even 20 per cent of that amount will have a significant impact on the transition to carbon-free energy,” neuroscientist Shantanu Ghosh replied on Twitter. The WHO’s Maria Neira pointed out that 12.6 million deaths are caused by air pollution every year. “This alone must be a compelling reason for climate action,” she said

New Global Movement

One of the pilots and founders behind the Solar Impulse electric aircraft project announced a new global movement at COP22 on Friday. If your start-up, company, institution or organisation produces or promotes clean technologies, you can now join the the World Alliance for Clean Technologies. The organisation is run by Bertrand Piccard and his Solar Impulse foundation. According to its founding charter, the alliance will benefit from “the media, political and institutional relations developed over the course of the Solar Impulse project.” The case for clean technologies is clear, Piccard said according to a tweet by the UNFCCC. “The motors of Solar Impulse are 97 per cent energy efficient. Combustion engines are 27 per cent efficient. The future is electric,” he said.

#COP22

Outgoing US energy secretary Ernest Moniz and EU climate action and energy commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete were spotted together at this weekend's Formula-E race through Marrakesh. The pair made an appearance in photos tweeted by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). For an impression of the electrifying race, check out this Twitter Moment.
Just ahead of this weekend's electric street racing sporting event, EU officials joined a 10-kilometre climate run through Brussels to show their commitment to climate action.
Meanwhile in Marrakesh, climate minister and UN climate champion Hakima El Haite had managed to fit in an electricity-generating cross trainer workout.
Most countries have sent youth delegations to COP22, and many of the participants are taking to social media to share their opinion on the outcome of the US election. Sophie Harrison, a climate activist from Vancouver, tweeted “Xenophobia, Islamophobia, misogyny and climate denial are not my values.”
