Free for Two Hours During the Day?

Do you work from home? Do you work night shifts? Do you have a day off during the week? Maybe you are in school and don't have class one day. Or maybe you are retired (or know someone who is!) and would love some more purpose in your week. We NEED you. We are looking for volunteers to come to Ibarra and work with our students in their classes DURING THE DAY. This would be especially perfect for those of you who want to come volunteer but can't make our Tuesday or Thursday evening sessions work for you.

We have four volunteers right now, but could use about ten more! We have so many opportunities for you to come, be another adult in the room to help guide, redirect and work with small groups of refugee students.
We currently have a graduate student from New Zealand, a retired grandmother who drives over 80 minutes each way, an adult ESL teacher and a mom from North County that work regularly with our students during the morning each week. Let's add YOU to this list. Ibarra doesn't have parent volunteers in classrooms. There is no PTA. There are no room parents. There isn't a foundation of parents and concerned citizens raising money for extra programming and field trips. The teachers and staff do everything. And, the joy it brings teachers and students to have another adult's help in the room, even if just for two hours a week, makes the world of a difference. Let's change the stats and make Ibarra one of the urban schools that is full of adult volunteers that care.

Here's what our ESL classes (mostly refugees) need:

Mondays: 9am-11:15am (2 people)
Tuesdays: 9:00am-11:15am (2 people)
Wednesdays: 9:00am-11:15am (1 person)
Fridays: 9:00am-11:15am (2 people)

We also have very full kindergarten classrooms with a variety of children (also many refugees), most of whom were not in preschool and need support. In talking with the kindergarten teachers, they would be delighted to have one more person in their classrooms and this could be any 2-3 hour block in the morning or afternoon. This could be any morning of the week and any afternoon with the exception of Wednesdays.

If you or someone you know would be interested in this, please have them email melissa@sdrefugeetutoring.com for more details. They will need to fill out the school district's volunteer application, have a current TB test and send a copy of their driver's license. Once they are approved, we will be ready to schedule them!

Fundraiser for Burmese tomorrow!

Karen Organization of San Diego is a fantastic organization that many of our students receive services from. This event is tomorrow, Nov. 14th, from 6-8pm. Click here for tickets! Craft beer, tostadas, and more! Kids under 12 are free!

Turkey Time is Coming!

It's that time of year! We get to introduce our new American friends to the joy of pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes and turkey (and stuffing, for the brave souls!). Please mark your calendars and plan to bring your whole family! This year, SDRT Thanksgiving will be on Tuesday, November 22nd, from 5-6:30pm in the Ibarra Auditorium. This is a WHOLE FAMILY event. This is our eighth year of hosting the largest Thanksgiving dinner you ever did see. It's a very special meal in which we all sit down together at the same table and enjoy a meal side by side. This is not a service event-- it is a time to get to know each other, share a meal and welcome our newly arrived American neighbors. We hope you will sign up to bring something, bring your spouse, kids, roommate, friends, and grandparents. It's always a blast. We will have plenty of organized activities for the kids.

Please contact melissa@sdrefugeetutoring.com if you would like to bring a craft for one of our stations!

PLEASE ALSO RSVP if you plan to come to our Thanksgiving Meal so we can plan for you!

Holiday Gifts Up Ahead...

In case you are thinking ahead, we have two gifts planned for the children for the holidays. If you are out and about and would like to contribute, our kids will love it! We would like to give each child new or gently used books and a new pair of shoes. We will accept donations at any time from now until the distribution on Tuesday, December 13th, during tutoring.

IMPORTANT: For books, please get  mostly easy readers as many of our kids are barely learning letters and numbers. For shoes, we are asking for gift cards to Payless Shoe Source as there is one in City Heights in case sizes need to be swapped. Or, you can also bring money for shoes and give it to a lead teacher. If anyone loves to shop or is very organized and would like to help out with this project, please email melissa@sdrefugeetutoring.com.
