Dear friends,
 
The Grammy award winning ensemble Eighth Blackbird will premiere the new piece Garden of Iniquitous Creatures this and next weekend in the Netherlands.
 
A commission for something funky from the Doelen in Rotterdam, Garden is my approach to a rhythmic piece, weaving together influences from Metal, Carnatic, Minimalism, the music of Frank Zappa, George Crumb and Conlon Nancarrow.
 
Technical info: the piece is constructed above a rhythmical spine lasting 60 notes, accented as follows: 7 7 5 5 5 3 3 3 3 2 2 2 2 2 3 3 3. This is repeated, built upon and altered throughout, a sort of influential rhythmical landscape on top of which much of the music travels. The nice thing about the length of 60 is that it is neatly divisible by 3,4 and 5 (plus a few other numbers), a source for other layers.
