Understanding Our Differences and Similarities is a district-wide, volunteer run program that supports students of the 4th grade in thinking about human ability as an important aspect of diversity. This program emphasizes commonality, helping students connect with others and see themselves along the spectrum of human ability in areas such as sight, hearing, physical ability and Intellectual/learning differences. We are seeking volunteers to participate this Friday: 11/18- Intellectual/Learning Differences.
As a volunteer you will need to be at school for about 2 hours that day- the lesson usually starts at either 8 or 830- you will be leading an activity of which you will be assigned- we will be happy to explain your activity in more detail. They are fun and engaging activities! Contact  kim_ktz@yahoo.com for details, and to sign up to volunteer!

Driscoll News:

Book Fair: December 5th-9th, Monday - Friday: The Book Fair is coming to the Driscoll Library next month!  Once again, students are invited to design their own poster for the Book Fair! This year’s theme is: Giving – what does reading or a book “give” you? Good ideas? Does it conjure up some happy memories? A sense of adventure? Introduce you to exciting characters or locations? Submit posters to the Main Office or Library by Wednesday, Nov. 16. (Correction: last week we accidentally said Nov.22). The winning design will be THE poster to publicize the Book Fair, and the winner will get a $25 gift card to use at the fair! We need LOTS of volunteers to help make the Book Fair a success. If you could spare an hour (or more) with library set-up, helping on the sales floor, working the cash registers, restocking shelves or packing up at the end of the week, please sign up here: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0f4fa8a82ea0ff2-driscoll5  The Book Fair will be open before and after school, and you can even come when your child's class visits the library. Please contact Amy, acrgrayson@gmail.com, Grace, gfjohnston71@gmail.com or Meg, mbrackley88@hotmail.com, with any questions.
Calling All Scientist Parents! Can You Volunteer One Morning for Driscoll?
This year, Science Solstice is on Friday, December 16th. We are still in need of one parent to lead 45-minute science demonstrations in 5th grade classrooms. We can help you define a topic!

The Driscoll Student Book Award (DSBA) has been launched, and students in grades 4 through 8 are reading the nominees!

Did you know that a student does not have to read a nominee independently to count it toward his or her reading goal?  Families can share a nominee as a read aloud at home.  Traveling over the upcoming holidays?  Listen to a nominee as an audiobook. Talk with your child/ren about what they like or don't like about a nominee.  So many ways for families to share the books!

Check out the DSBA website to learn more about the program and nominees.

Want a family read recommendation? Have questions about the program?  Stop by the library before or after school, or email Ms. Reid at anne_reid@psbma.org.

Happy reading!

PTO Spotlight:

PTO Spotlight with 6/7 Grade Science Teacher, Eric Hazlinsky

Q:
How long have you been at Driscoll?  Tell us what you did before coming to Driscoll.

A: This is my second year teaching at Driscoll.  Before coming to Driscoll I taught 7th grade English for four years in Aurora, Colorado.  I also taught high school for one year in Indonesia.

Q: Tell us how you decided to become involved in education.

A: I have always loved working with kids.  After completing my undergraduate degree I knew I wanted to become a teacher and attended Northeastern University to earn my Master's in education.

Q: What is your favorite part of the teaching day?  What is most important to you as you spend your days with children?

A: My favorite part of the teaching day is talking to kids about great books!  I love when students come into my classroom excited to tell me about the book that they're reading.  It's so important to make connections with my students and reading is the perfect way to do it.

Q: Fun Fact! What's something we should know about you that we don't?

A: When I'm not teaching I'm usually outside. Hiking, skiing, camping, and scuba diving are some of my favorite activities.

Principal's Corner
(read on driscollpto.org here)

It seems like an appropriate time to revisit two of our core values* that we hold in the Public Schools of Brookline.  We believe in these values deeply.  I want to open the door and ask you...how do you see these values living in our school community and what (and who) are we missing?

This week, I’ll be visiting classrooms to remind students that they should “Expect Respect” of each other, and from every member of our community.  We’ll talk about expectations for behavior, but we’ll also talk about every child’s right to a safe and welcoming school environment.  We’ll talk about the seriousness of impacting another person’s learning environment with comments related to gender, race, religion or any other aspect of identity or experience.  Actions that impact others in this way should be reported and will be addressed with significant consequence and learning experiences designed to change behavior.

Each parent, student and staff member must be actively working to create a safe and welcoming school environment.  And, let’s build on the good work that is already happening.  Talk with friends and neighbors about ways we can even better celebrate difference and eliminate barriers to participation and achievement for each and every family at Driscoll.  Share your ideas openly with each other and with me.  Our PTO and our School Council are two parent representative groups who are talking about and working on building a stronger community.  We’d love to hear the ideas you have.

Warmly,

Heidi

*Two of the Public Schools of Brookline’s Core Values:

Respect for Human Difference

We are committed to acknowledging and celebrating the diversity within our community while affirming the importance of our common humanity. By promoting a safe environment for questioning and challenge, we foster the growth and value that comes from different perspectives, cultures and experiences. Our commitment is to create an atmosphere of safety in which to acknowledge and express difference while advancing true acceptance and respect for all.

Educational Equity

The Public Schools of Brookline are committed to identifying and eliminating barriers to educational achievement in our schools. To this end, we create policies and practices that are fair and just and provide educational opportunities to ensure that every student, regardless of race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, age, national origin, disability, or economic status, meets our standards for achievement, participation, and growth.
