Welcome to our Winter Newsletter!
Friends old and new, ladies and gentlemen, welcome to our Winter Newsletter. We invite you to share in our artists' achievements, visit their Christmas events, read their news about their involvement in exotic 3D items, eclectic mix of painting and ceramic shows, glamorous fashion even, wonderful Wiltshire wildlife photography, recent awards and commissions! We also list what's on in nearby galleries. Do make a note of the dates and drop in if you can. Some shows are off the beaten track and a few outside Wiltshire.  All are in lovely locations.

In a hurry? It takes about 5 minutes to read our newsletter. You can retrieve our winter newsletter and links on our Friends page of our website here at any time.
Winning Ways

Jane Corbett's first steps into Open Studios led straight into to an eventful and successful autumn.  The 3D artist and milliner won the Harris & Harris prize in the Wells Contemporary Art Open competition with Stone Seed exhibited in the Bishop's Palace last month. Jane then secured representation by Bath's Art Salon with 9 pieces currently showing in their gallery.

Jane is also showing in a group winter exhibition 'PRESENCE' at Lingwood Samuel Art, 12 Church Street, Godalming.  Jane has just written to confirm that her first solo exhibition at Mount House Gallery, Marlborough will be from 3 to 29 March immediately before the MOS Preview Show.
Fabric featured in The Crown

The Princess Margaret collection in the line up above were on display at Liberty's until last week.  Don't miss the mannequin at the back by the window!  Trompe l'oeil artist and textile designer Michael Angove designed the Liberty print fabric for the dress of hand drawn ruffles and folds in a dusty pink Crepe de Chine silk. Actress Vanessa Kirby is pictured here wearing the dress designed to make the princess appear "wrapped up like a gift".

Wild Wiltshire

Stephen Davis is an ecologist and Open Studios photographer au naturel. "I never use photoshop" he once told me.  For over two years Stephen, with a team of outstanding natural history photographers, worked on an inspiring book to celebrate our local wildlife, habitats and living landscapes.

The result is WILD WILTSHIRE, a treasure trove of colour photographs illustrating the great diversity of landscape, woodland, meadow, downland, plant and animals.

Proceeds in aid of Wiltshire Wildlife Trust.  Full details and preview here

Blown home

It has been a long journey to the final resting place of Blown Away by sculptor Sioban Coppinger. Originally created for a WWI commemorative exhibition at The Garden Gallery in 2014, the piece's first temporary home was in the National Trust garden of Stanley Spencer's Sandham Memorial Chapel.  The bronze, a homage to those whose lives have been fleeting, has been gifted by a sponsor to the National Memorial Arboretum and permanently rests on its rusty pedestal in the Boyes Garden, adjacent to Heroes Square at the heart of the Remembrance Centre.

Award for Bigglestones

Photographer and mature student Susie Bigglestone who has been pursuing a photography degree at Plymouth University made it to the student's finals of the Assoc of Photographers' Award.  Further more images by Susie and husband John (also a mature student), were not only selected for Frame 16 but Susie's picture (opposite) won 'Best in Student' category.   It pays to learn later in life!

Open Studios represents a huge annual collaborative effort for professional local artists without paid staff.  The Open Studios committee is sorry to have to say good bye to two MOS heroes.

Paul Swan, wood turner and box maker, who with painter, Simone Dawood, has increased our profile and visibility with his sign posting and road side banners over the last two years.
Paul has also been instrumental in securing major sponsorship.

CHANGES AT MOS

Oliver Freeman, painter, has been in charge of all the logistics involved in producing the fabulous brochure, its distribution for the last three years and much wise counsel besides.

Brochure production has been taken on by sculptor Jane Corbett and photographer Diana Neale will take on signs and banners.  A very warm and appreciative welcome to both for volunteering.

Luckily, some things stay the same. Lisi Ashbridge, who somehow fits in stone lettering, will continue as Chairman for MOS 2017. Three cheers and a virtual bouquet for Lisi!
