Long Beach Rising graduates 30 new community organizers

 Thirty new community organizers graduated from the Long Beach Rising leadership training on November 5th after participating in the four-week class and knocking on doors in Central Long Beach to mobilize voters. For the fifth year in a row, the Long Beach Rising leadership training has offered youth and adult community members the opportunity to learn the basics of organizing, apply their skills in the community, and be mentored alongside organizers working on social-justice issues across Long Beach. Thanks to the collaborative electoral work of many BHC partners, participants applied their organizing skills by walking precincts to engage voters on Propositions 55, 56, and 57, all of which passed by large margins on election day.
As Long Beach Rising works to create more leadership pathways for individuals interested in social justice, many graduates will be helping organize the upcoming People’s State of the City happening in Spring 2017. In the media: “Untold Stories” report sparks conversations on racial equity

 “We are not perfect and we are the first ones to say, we need to work harder," shared Long Beach Unified School District board member Megan Kerr when interviewed by Southern California Public Radio KPCC. Since the release last month of the report Untold Stories from One of America’s Best Urban School Districts, various news outlets have reported on the findings, the personal experiences, and the opportunities for change laid out in the report. Through the findings and recommendations, the report aims to encourage more district and community collaboration that supports student learning and a universal pathway to college and a career for all LBUSD students, and in particular high-need students. BHCLB welcomes new community leaders to the steering committee
|

|
 Building Healthy Communities: Long Beach is excited to welcome three new community leaders to our steering committee! The BHCLB Steering Committee provides strategic direction and support for the Building Healthy Communities initiative and the implementation of the BHCLB Community Action Plan. After applying to serve on the steering committee, each of the new members was selected by the current steering committee based off their involvement, passion for positive change, and strengths that they can contribute to the group.
Of the newly added members, one represents a community-based organization while the other two represent community residents who live in or near the focus area of West and Central Long Beach. Semillas de Esperanza (represented by Monica Parilla) is a community organization working to improve the welfare of children and families in West Long Beach and is a former BHCLB mini-grant recipient. Erik Miller is a long-time community leader who was involved in the early planning stages of the BHCLB initiative in 2010. George Lopez is a youth leader with Educated Men with Meaningful Messages (EM3) and the BHCLB Youth Committee, and a current student at Long Beach City College.

December 7: BHCLB End of the Year Celebration

 Raise the wage, end wage theft, no SCIG, every student matters, and VOTA: 2016 has been a year of big wins and opportunities to improve the health of Long Beach residents. As the year comes to a close, it’s time for us to celebrate our work and look forward to the future at the End of the Year Celebration. This multigenerational event will offer free food, music by MASS MOVEMENT, activities, fun for the whole family, and more surprises as the evening unfolds. All community members and partner organizations are encouraged to attend.
The End of the Year Celebration takes place on Wednesday, December 7 from 5:00pm to 7:30pm at First Congregational Church. Long Beach Time Exchange members can earn time credits for bringing a potluck item to share and emailing lbtimeexchange@gmail.com.
