Mind Over Matter

SEA's main production this year was staged during Mental Health week last October.  This cross art form production turned the whole of Southern Edge Arts into the inside of a youth brain and involved students from puppetry, circus, aerial arts, street acrobatics and drama.  The audience was guided, physically and artistically through the thoughts, memories and experiences of the mind of a young person.  Moving away from the topics of bullying and depression, that are usually portrayed in exploration of mental health affecting youth, this production focused on dreams, hopes and memories of monsters under the bed. The conclusion drew attention to how performance arts involves a practice of mindfulness and connection to others.
The set was constructed using meters of finger knitting, paper and stockings stuffed with paper 'thoughts' created during a weekend workshop for members and their families, and included scaffolding, a slack line and aerials rigged at eye level.
The performance was included as part of Amity Health's 'Create It' exhibition.  This was a week long awareness raising campaign of how the arts contributes positively to the community's mental health.

Car Body Project

Through out term 4 this year, SEA artist Serena McLauchlan has been working with young people from NASHS, through the Noongar Kids in Schools Program, to create an art installation piece using a car body as the canvas.
A partnership with the Great Southern Employment Development Commission allowed SEA to place an artist with boys from Clontarf, who used the art project to explore the dangers of distracted drivers.
The success of the project was showcased during the Christmas Pageant, with the car body being hoisted onto a truck as a pageant float, sending the road safety message to audiences at the pageant.

School Holiday Workshops

SEA Summer School Program is set to be another fantastic one. We've got international, state and local artists collaborating to present a carnival of excitement - slack lining, juggling, drama improvisation, performance making, aerials, act development, and min-trampoline. No matter what you skill level, age or interest, we are sure will find something to entertain you these holidays. The workshops will be from 9th-18th of January. Bookings open soon. Keep your eye on your inbox for information about summer school.

Christmas Festival & Pageant

Despite the rain, CircaSEA and the Street Acro Crew presented an entertaining acrobatics act and Capoiera dance battle at the Christmas Pageant festival in Albany's town square.
The 45 minute Cabaret show was accompanied by a live band, who created a musical score especially to accompany the individual acts.
Unfortunately due to rain, the show was cancelled moments before we were ready to go on, but the professionalism of these young performers shone through as they expertly dismantled the aerial rig and as they say... "The show must go on!" They presented very entertaining acrobatics and capoeira dance for the audiences.
The full performance was restaged at SEA the following Thursday 8th Dec.

Poets & Performers

SEA has been playing host to 'Poets & Performers' in our Green Room Theatre space.  This monthly live performance night, invites poets and performers to share and show their latest offerings in a informal and supportive environment.  Each month a guest poet is invited to perform and the rest of the evening the mic is open to any one willing to have a go.  It has been a fantastic representation of local writers and performers with a range of styles being performed.
SEA has enjoyed opening its doors to this group and invites you to get involved as a performer or an audience member. To find out more see the 'Poets and Performers' Facebook group.

Outreach

Outreach program: Traveling far and wide this term, our artists entertained literally hundreds of students for excursions, at end-of-year celebrations, and on camps. In one school week artist Cassy Turner taught circus skills to 203 primary school students.
Towns such as Jerramungup, Wellsted, Bremmer Bay, South Stirlings and local schools such as Parklands, all had the opportunity to experience our high quality circus skills.  We are always grateful for the chance to introduce young people to arts experiences and share our skills through out the Great Southern Region.
