Louisiana Lafayette AD Farmer announced his resignation yesterday after five years of leading the Ragin' Cajuns, will transition to a full-time faculty role in the university's School of Kinesiology. Farmer: "For the past 30 years, I loved the lifestyle. I loved the job. But the job demands take a toll on you. It takes a toll on your loved ones, on your friends, on your health and your commitment to your church." Deputy AD Leger will serve as Interim & former Missouri AD Alden will assist with the search process to hire a new leader. Prez Savoie: "You know, these last few years have been, I think, dynamic times and progressive times, and it’s taken a lot of effort and put a lot of toll on a lot of people. I’m speculating, but maybe Scott (Farmer) decided, ‘Don’t want to go through this again. Do I want to go through another round of this, of the pressure of trying to improve multiple things simultaneously?’" Savoie on a new AD: relationship-building, fundraising, academic-focus, "visionary," collaborative with the university, understanding of NCAA rules, more. (link)
Big FLSA news. Agreeing with 21 states and a coalition of business groups, a federal judge in Texas granted a nationwide injunction and ruled that new FLSA standards set to go into effect on December 1 are unlawful. Judge ruled the new standards would have created "essentially a de facto salary-only test" for determining overtime wages, which he says federal law does not allow. The Labor Department obviously disagrees and is determining whether or not to appeal the decision. (link)
Academic misconduct at Notre Dame leads to the NCAA handing down a list of sanctions, including vacating 21 FB wins earned in 2012 & 2013. Specifically, a former athletic trainer completed course work for six FB student-athletes. The Fighting Irish will appeal the penalties as it deemed the NCAA's findings a "disturbing message" to all schools given the circumstances. Notre Dame compared its situation to a number of other infractions cases involving academic misconduct, with the closest connection to the dynamics at East Carolina in 2011. HC Kelly uses the word "excessive." SEC Commish Sankey was the chief hearing officer in the case. More. (link); Here's the full report. (link)
A former tutor at Missouri says she assisted with entrance exams & did course work for Tiger student-athletes. "I have taken and assisted with entrance assessment, completed entire courses, and I been present to provide assistance with online assessments. It was encouraged, promoted, and supported by at least two Academic Coordinators for athletes in revenue generating sports, however, the wide spread desperation to succeed by other student-athletes at the bottom of an inverted pyramid of the organization’s construct cross (sic) multiple sports." AD Sterk: "While we recognize that there will be many questions regarding this situation, these investigations take time to ensure that we do it the right way. As always, our mission is to uphold the highest standard of academic performance and ensure the proper conduct with all of our programs." (link)
Louisiana Monroe Deputy AD Brooks will return to Georgia as Executive Assoc. AD & COO. Brooks was previously on the Bulldogs staff from 2008 to 2014 before becoming the AD at DIII Millsaps in a short tenure. Brooks joined ULM around this time last year as a special assistant to Prez Bruno & was named Deputy AD in January. (link, link)
Texas Tech AD & College FB Playoff selection committee chair Hocutt was back in front of the cameras last night to reveal a new set of rankings. Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan & Clemson in the Top 4. Washington, Wisconsin, Penn State & Oklahoma in the next quartet. Some quotes, "There's a lot to like about Washington. The strength of schedule still gives the committee pause at this time to rank them any higher." And, "The committee continues to be very impressed with a Michigan team who's the only team with three wins against CFP top-10 teams. They continue to be impressed with Michigan's defense. We discussed the quarterback situation. We're aware of it, but obviously that didn't change our opinions." More. (link)
All sorts of speculation in Texas, here's what I found most interesting yesterday from Scout's Brown, "UT sources said Strong’s $10.7 million buyout for the remaining two years on his contract as well as the $6.6 million in buyouts for assistant coaches’ guaranteed contracts are a concern. Especially with a legislative session starting in Austin in January with lawmakers trying to contain higher education costs (even though no state money is used for athletics). Those sources said Fenves would do what he needed to do in paying for the buyouts if necessary." (link); Houston HC Herman says in an interview, "money is not an issue. I spent most of my career making peanuts. Money has very little to do with my job and my happiness." (link); Industry kingpin Neinas adds his two cents, sees a fit between the Longhorns & Herman, notes the benefits of using a search firm & not doing business in public, "You have to know you might not get your first choice." (link)
Some financial details for Clemson AD Radakovich's new deal as provided by The Post & Courier's Brenner, "Clemson athletic director Dan Radakovich has a new six-year contract worth $809,000 a year through the 2021-22 academic school year. Radakovich can also earn athletic, academic & financial bonuses, including $30k for #CFBPlayoff or NY6 bowl and $20k for NCAAT men's berth." (link, link)
Statement from the attorney of Baylor Assoc. AD for Communications Nielsen, "Shortly after the Baylor v. TCU football game on November 5th, Heath intervened when he noticed a man attempting to do an unauthorized interview of a student-athlete on the field. The one-sided version of events released by the complainant are not true or accurate. Mr. Nielsen maintains that he intervened to stop the interview, but he did not grab the complainant's throat. We look forward to vigorously defending Mr. Nielsen and presenting the facts involved in this situation." (link)
Former Jackson State AD Fuller, who had transitioned to Assoc. VP of Student Affairs, is now no longer with the university. Interim Prez Paige, as part of a short statement, "We thank Dr. Fuller and we wish her well in future endeavors." Fuller was atop the Tigers department from 2011 to 2015, a stretch that saw six lawsuits filed against her. "Three were dismissed. In one, a jury ruled in favor of the plaintiff who said he was wrongly fired, and another lawsuit was settled." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Length of games is big topic in the world of FB & SBD/SBJ's Ourand digs a bit deeper on how the NFL may look to remedy the situation. The average game time is up by five minutes over the past two seasons. "The idea also is that shorter games will keep viewers watching longer. Even with the lower ratings this season, the league’s overall reach number is consistent with previous years." Fewer ad breaks is unlikely to be a solution, but a halftime of only 10 minutes, speeding up replays & changing who actually announces penalties could all get tweaked. (link)

Interesting read from espnW on how Eastern Michgian AD Lyke helped to turn the historic tide against Eagles FB & achieve what some thought was impossible: a winning season & bowl eligibility. The last winning season for EMU was 1995 & last bowl game appearance happened in 1987. Lyke: "Managing a train that's already on the right track is very different than turning the train and moving it in an absolutely different direction. That's the fun of it. You get a chance to create a new track and build tradition and do things that have never been done before. […] I want women to aspire to do this because there's nothing to say you can't," she says. "There are a lot of terrific men and women who will give you a chance. There might be some that wouldn't. Presidents and board members are making these decisions. I can build relationships with donors and board members just as well as a man can. You have to have the self-confidence to do the job. Put yourself out there and don't be afraid to go after it." More. (link)
The WBB Oversight Committee has sent a survey to all conferences on potential changes to the post-season Tourney. Up for discussion are moving the Final Four back by a weekend, using 32 opening round sites, playing the second round & regional gams at the same sites. NCAA VP for WBB Browne: "We want to talk to the practitioners on campus — the senior women's associates, the coaches, we hope there is some feedback from the student athletes. Student athlete input is pretty important." Generally speaking, broadcast partner ESPN is against most of the ideas. More. (link)
Lawsuits: Two females involved in the gang rape allegations at Baylor have reached a financial settlement with the university. No financial details provided. (link); Former Drake Head Athletic Trainer Kerr has filed suit against the university & AD Hatfield Clubb on the grounds he was terminated based on a medical issue that can cause frequent and sudden urination. More details within. (link); Oklahoma FB student-athlete Mixon speaks publicly for the first time in regards to the physical confrontation with OU student Molitor, "For the last two years, my lawyers have advised me against speaking publicly about an incident that occurred very shortly after I arrived in Norman. Today, I want to say what everyone deserves to hear from me about this matter: I am sorry." A judge recently dismissed two of the three charges Molitor has brought against Mixon. (link, link)
More HC moves & talk: Presbyterian AD Reese moves quickly, hires FB DC Spangler as the new HC for the Blue Hose, a role he previously held from 2001 to 2006 when PC was a DII member. (link); NC State AD Yow pegs USF Men's Soccer HC Kiefer to take over the Wolfpack program. Kiefer tallied a 162-86-51 mark in 15 season with the Bulls. (link); UConn FB HC Diaco says he can fix the Huskies problems & has he support of AD Benedict. (link); Cincinnati FB HC Tuberville: "I never worry about my job." Continues by indicating he & AD Bohn are on the same page with the direction of the program. (link); Fox Sports lead Feldman says Wyoming AD Burman & FB HC Bohl are working on a new deal. (link); Western Michigan donors think they can keep FB HC Fleck with a financial package worth $1.5M to $2M per year. (link)
Penn hosted an espnW Campus Conversation in the Palestra on Monday night, the first of its kind in the Ivy League. An impressive lineup of female professionals & Quaker alumni covered topics, including transitioning from student-athlete to the the work force, before engaging current student-athletes further via more direct conversations. espnW's VP for Growth Initiatives LaPlaca: "One of the things we are trying to do with espnW is to engage and inspire women through sports. The way we can connect with female student-athletes and talk about the pivot from being a student-athlete to going into the real world is really exciting." (link)
Monday came reports of Amazon looking to make big waves in sports streaming & yesterday there was major news on the wire of the eCommerce giant looking to also disrupt the ticketing industry. Amazon Tickets launched last year in the U.K. with one value prop of already having confirmed method of payments on file for customers & therefore making the purchase process of concert & show tickets much cleaner. Amazon has recently been advertising for key jobs that would aid in the strategy & build-out of the tickets vertical on an international scale. (link)
Listen: In the most recent ACC Now podcast (key note: not produced by the league), Raleigh News & Observer's DeCock covered a handful of topics, including the future impact of HB2 on the state of North Carolina. But, most interesting for this space is a discuss that starts around the 32-minute mark on who could be the next ACC Commissioner. DeCock believes Commish Swofford has a stretch left, then points to Duke AD White if he were younger, notes Atlantic 10 Commish McGlade as having ACC connections, as well as College FB Playoff COO Kelly given his own pervious work in the conference office. Philly.com's Fitzpatrick takes a look at high-level success for Women's programs over the years at Penn State. Volleyball has been a key part of the equation, but so too has Women's Soccer & Fencing, which combined have won 13 National Championships. Senior Assoc. AD for Student-Athlete Performance, Health & Welfare/SWA Green: "At a lot of institutions, it's a fight. At those places, you feel like you're fighting every day just to try to help women's sports get better. What I've experienced here is that [women's sports] have always been an integral part of the discussions and of the decisions that were made." Lots more on the backstory, as well as inherent benefits & challenges in Happy Valley. (link)
Another Mountain West AD, this time Utah State's Hartwell, covers the late night FB kick-offs debate. "The vast majority of us are dealing with this issue. It's going to be a topic of interest. Nothing is going to change for our current television contract. But as we enter into future negotiations, the question is, 'What's next?' Obviously, the financial consideration is huge. But what other platforms are out there? Can have some more control over our kick times?" Seven of the Aggies final nine games this season kicked around 8:25pm local time. (link)
Ohio State-Michigan is the FBS headliner this weekend & CBSSports.com's Solomon notes how modern recruiting tactics have geographically diversified each program. "Fifty-one percent of the 2016 Ohio State and Michigan players are from those states (Ohio & Michigan), down from 61 percent in 2006, according to an analysis by CBS Sports. Thirty years ago, when Harbaugh (born in Ohio, partially raised in Michigan) famously delivered on his guarantee to beat the Buckeyes, 69 percent of The Game's players came from those states." Other pieces of the story are declining populations in both home states & the satellite camp push. (link)
Around Higher Ed: Tennessee Chancellor-select & Interim Cincinnati Prez Davenport says UT was aggressive in coming after her & that UC is still picking up speed in its search process. She will stick in Cincy through January of next year before heading permanently to Knoxville. (link); USC Upstate has a new Chancellor in West Florida (DII) VP for Advancement Kelly. (link); The Presidential search at Florida Gulf Coast will stretch into next year as two more candidates have withdrawn their names. The university has asked Witt/Kieffer to hit the marketplace again to see if there are more leaders interested in the role. (link); IPFW won a huge MBB match-up last night over Indiana, but its Faculty Senate submitted a no confidence vote on Monday for Chancellor Carwein. (link)
Also noticed: Eastern Michigan Deputy AD Spears on what to say at Thanksgiving dinner if student-athletes pay is discussed, "That’s why they don’t receive a salary — because they receive quality instruction, immense support to enhance their student-athlete experience on the campus." (link); Michigan State FB HC Dantonio hints that the Spartans have figured out a solution to its scheduling conundrum for next season that currently starts with a bye week. Says he'll wait until the athletic department is ready to announce. (link); Old Dominion FB is within 500 tickets of selling out its 54th straight game at Foreman Field. (link); The City of Oakland has closed in on a stadium plan for the NFL's Raiders in a bid to keep the team from moving to Las Vegas. (link); To clarify a note from yesterday, Louisville has not allowed opposing team media to interview FB coaches or student-athletes all season, so it's not just a policy for the Kentucky game this weekend. (link); The streaming deal between Riot Games' League of Legends & BAM Tech is up to $200M over two years. (link); NASCAR's TV ratings (and popularity?) down in 25 of the top 36 races this season.
