NOTES FROM THE HEAD’S STUDY

Dear Parents,

I trust you have had a good week. At school, time seems to be speeding up as we head into the final three weeks of term. To the busy buzz of classroom activity, we have now added the giddy riot of preparation for our final festive week of term. All very jolly!

Congratulations to all those who represented The Abbey in various sports fixtures, both home and away, this week. Some tough games, but all played in excellent spirits with Abbey pupils showing tremendous sportsmanship both on and off the pitch. Well done indeed.

We look forward to welcoming parents and friends to the various end of term events both at Queen’s House and The Abbey during these final weeks of term. Please check the school calendar for details and do feel free to email the relevant school office if you have any questions about the arrangements.

Enjoy the weekend.

With best wishes.

John Brett
Head of The Abbey and Queen’s House

ST MARY'S CHURCH VISIT

3M had a very interesting visit to St. Mary’s Church on Monday. We were met by Mr Clark who talked to us about the organ.  He showed us the pipes and explained how the air travelled through them. He also showed us the “Breadbin”, which is the name he gives the organ! He explained that there were three keyboards, the Swell, the Pedal, and the Great. He demonstrated how he used the stops and how they changed the sound of the instrument; he could play really quietly and really loudly! He finished by giving us a wonderful recital.

BOYS' SPORT

The Abbey had a  busy day of fixtures against Kings Ely on Thursday. The U10 A played well, with Fred Cole scoring a long range try. However, they slipped to a 5-2 loss. The U10B team, however, were run away winners. Edward Carter scored 5 tries.

In the Under 11 matches, the B team lost 6-0.  Oliver Laxton and Jimmy Glendinning both had great games. The A team lost a close game 2-1. Erwan Gouedo made the tackle of the season to stop Ely scoring again.

All four teams played in good formation and worked hard to be competitive. Most importantly everyone enjoyed the afternoon.
GIRLS' SPORT

U11 A Hockey v Ipswich High School
With an U11 squad not at full strength and luck not on our side, we didn’t win this evenly matched game. We kept fighting and we never gave up, even though we weren’t on top form. In the first half IHS scored two goals. In the second half we came back attacking strongly, the defence didn’t let a goal in and play was in our half for most of the time. We had a lot of short corners that we couldn’t convert – one was from Maddie Buchanan, which was saved on the goal line!  Beau Barrington-Hibbert shot at goal and it hit the post and skimmed along the goal line! Their keeper caught four balls in her pads and we were scrabbling  around for the ball, but  we couldn’t get it in the back of the goal. Special mention must go to Chloe Morgan in defence, for persistent strength and determination to clear the ball.  Today just wasn’t our day and this match wasn’t up to our usual standard, but we still performed well and we never gave up.
The U11 A Team

U11 B Hockey v Ipswich High School
The U11 B Team were also missing players due to illness and injury, but Georgie Phillips and Isabel Deacon kindly stepped in to help. Katarina Corfe held the game together in the middle, ably supported by her wings.  Sadly the girls didn’t win, but they had a great afternoon of hockey.

U11 C Hockey v Ipswich High School
The Abbey drew 1 - 1

U11 D Hockey v Ipswich High School
On a grey Wednesday afternoon all the Y5 and Y6 girls were able to play hockey against IHS. In their final match all the girls demonstrated the skills they have been working on this term. The ball travelled around the pitch from end to end. The girls had several really good tries at scoring a goal, but were unable to get the ball over the line. The final score was 3 – 0 to Ipswich. All The Abbey girls had a turn on the pitch, playing together as a cohesive team for their final away game of the season.
NEWS FROM QUEEN'S HOUSE

YEAR 2 GREAT FIRE OF LONDON DAY

On Tuesday, Year 2 dressed up as 17th century Londoners and enjoyed an exciting Great Fire of London day. The workshop involved lots of team games and drama. In groups of four the children created shapes of timber framed houses and took part in a true and false quiz. The children used ‘firesticks’ to make up dances with. The afternoon involved improvisation and acting out different scenarios. Thomas Farynor’s bakery in Pudding Lane was the scene for one where Oscar played Thomas Farynor and Arwen played Mrs Farynor. Amba took the role of their child and Edie was cast as Mary the maid, who sadly did not survive the fire. It proved to be a very fun and stimulating day!
