November/December update – Making the Case
Hello all –
For London, yesterday's Autumn Statement was a mix of the good (funding for new and affordable homes, devolution of work & health programmes), the bad (slower economic growth) and the absent (Crossrail 2, Stamp Duty reform, environment). For the gains and the question marks, there's been an obvious need to make a clear case for funding and political support, which will have helped sway these decisions.
I saw the same need this morning at a Mayor of London debate on green infrastructure kicked off by Deputy Mayor Shirley Rodrigues – a room of the largely converted working out how to make the case to governments, developers and communities that [quality] green infrastructure is worth investing time and money in.
We also saw it in our first two Mayor's Transport Strategy events and when we co-hosted Countryside's Alan Cherry Debate on how local authorities can lead on housing delivery in a post-Brexit world. All of these sessions moved beyond the high level to specifics: proving value, building relationships and putting mechanisms in place to get things done.
This practical ethos has driven FoL's 2016 work on Estate Renewal in London, Business Improvement Districts, Managing London's Climate Change Risk and Workspace that Works. We'll carry it through 2017 programmes on Public– Private Placemaking, Smarter Cities, PRS and of course in our Leaders programmes. If you'd like to get involved, contact us.
Joining our partner group to help deliver all that are returning sponsor Lend Lease and new sponsor Potter Raper Partnership – a warm welcome to them, and to new FoL board member Debbie Jackson, GLA Assistant Director of Regeneration, stepping in for Stewart Murray, now at GL Hearn. We'll also be working with Debbie and alumnus Finn Williams this winter, advising on his Place Agency (working title) effort to bridge the staffing gap in borough planning and regeneration. We'll give over a Jan/Feb Housing Zones Network session as a forum for your views - all FoL members are welcome to HZN, so keep an eye on the Events page.
