Earlier this November, TEDxColumbus was held at the Riffe Center in downtown Columbus.  Eighteen speakers inspired audiences with stories and performances focused on exploring risks. Divided into distinct categories, the speakers shared experiences in healthcare to business to helping at-risk populations. This session was followed by the high school session in which fourteen speakers from Columbus area high schools, chosen and coached by seven TEDxOhioStateUniversity members, spoke out about stepping outside of their own comfort zones.

These fourteen students were incredibly bright and especially passionate about presenting their ideas to the Columbus community and the world. Within a five-week time span, each speaker-coach had one or two students to mentor in the art of giving a TED talk. As these speakers walked into the green room on the day of the event, they were filled with anticipation. Having to give a talk in front of an audience was a risk in itself. While some students opted to take the risk to speak on serious issues such as female genital mutilation, others performed incredibly personal spoken-word pieces. Both sets of talks were able to move the audience to tears.

All TEDxColumbus: RISK talks will be uploaded soon to tedxcolumbus.com/risk.
Join TEDxOhioStateUniversity at our second Satellite Event of the year: Edify.

Edify will aim to inform the Ohio State community of the nuances of our 21st-century education system. Our three speakers will bring with them years of experience working with underprivileged communities in Columbus and will attempt to highlight the educative experience that these communities face.

Their talks will highlight several creative ways that organizations have attempted to "edify" those who lack the means for a good education and some ways that education has changed and continues to transform as society advances.

TEDxOhioStateUniversity: Edify will take place in 100 Campbell Hall on Friday, December 2nd, at 5 pm. Admission is FREE and open to all who wish to attend.

RSVP for Edify on the event page, here!
Happy Holidays from TEDx!
TEDxOhioStateUniversity and its members have more than a million things to be thankful for this year. Great family, great friends, and great food are awaiting many of us, but the sheer fact that we get to be part of an organization that informs, instigates and invigorates mass audiences is something we can never be grateful for enough. Since we’re in the holiday spirit, TEDxOhioStateUniversity wants to do our part in spreading the attitude of gratitude, so here are two TED Talks we think have great ideas of appreciation worth spreading.

Our first selection is “Want to be happy? Be grateful” by David Steindl-Rast.

“The one thing all humans have in common is that each of us wants to be happy, says Brother David Steindl-Rast, a monk and interfaith scholar. And happiness, he suggests, is born from gratitude. An inspiring lesson in slowing down, looking where you’re going, and above all, being grateful.”

If you only have three and a half minutes to be inspired (or have three and a half minutes to kill), please check out the short, yet powerful, TED Talk: “Remember to say thank you” by Laura Trice.

“In this deceptively, simple 3-minute talk, Dr. Laura Trice muses on the power of the magic words ‘thank you’ — to deepen a friendship, to repair a bond, to make sure another person knows what they mean to you. Try it.”
