Announcements

Upcoming: Two Special Professional Development Events

OCS is excited to announce an exclusive small-group workshop on public speaking and presenting (November 29), and a special panel discussion on networking with alumni (December 5).

EFFECTIVE PUBLIC SPEAKING AND PRESENTATION TECHNIQUES
Tuesday, November 29 – 12:00-2:00pm, OCS Conference Room, IAB 420
Yumiko Shimabukuro, Ph.D.

Participants will gain confidence in communicating key ideas while pursuing career opportunities and developing leadership skills.  The workshop leader, a distinguished communicator and Assistant Professor of International and Public Affairs at SIPA, will describe techniques that will enable participants to be proactive and persuasive in a variety of interpersonal and public speaking situations.  Topics to be covered include: how to organize and present knowledge, using a communications “hook,” controlling the energy in a room, structuring presentations, conference and panel etiquette, and more.
Enrollment is strictly limited to 15.  Participants must arrive on time and commit to attending the full workshop.  Latecomers will not be admitted.

HOW TO MAXIMIZE ALUMNI RELATIONSHIPS
Monday, December 5 – 6:30-8:00pm, location TBA
Charles M. Martorana and a diverse panel of alumni

You’ve heard about the importance of networking with alumni in managing your job search.  Perhaps you’ve already met some alums, and you’re wondering how to re-connect and seek their assistance.  In short
after you shake hands for the first time, what comes next?

For answers and insights, attend this informative and lively panel discussion.  Senior management consultant and SIPA alumnus Charles Martorana (MPA 2009) will discuss the how to’s and do’s and don’ts of relationship building with alumni.  Along with several experienced SIPA alumni colleagues, Mr. Martorana will talk about what alumni can (and cannot) do for you; some of the constraints that alumni typically face; how to make the most of an alum’s time; making it easy for alums to help you; smart questions to ask in informational meetings; and insights into the hiring process that current students should know.

Presidential Management Fellows Program

The application dates for the Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program have been announced.  The application can be accessed at www.USAJOBS.gov until December 1 (Thursday) at 11:59pm.  Directions on applying can be found on www.pmf.gov.

Please note the following changes to the application process:
  • The in-person assessment has been eliminated.  Finalists will be selected solely on the scores from their online assessment.
  • The STEM pilot program has been eliminated, and STEM candidates are now part of the overall program.
  • The hiring event will be virtual and will take place in late January or early February.
OCS will be holding an information session about PMF on November 28 (Monday) from 11:00am to 12:00pm in IAB, Room 420.

Instructions on Applying to Department of Defense (DoD) Internships

To apply for internships within DoD, students should email their cover letter (identifying their agency preference and/ or field of interests as well as their available start dates), resume, and transcripts to Washington Headquarter Services (WHS) at whsvolunteers@mail.mil.

Once these materials have been received, students' applications will be referred to DoD agencies. They will contact applicants who they wish to interview. Students can find additional information about the application process by visiting http://www.whs.mil/careers

Applicants who want to work within Office of the Under Secretary Defense (OUSD) Policy should specify that on their application as well as their particular area(s) of interest.

Students who have questions about the application process or the internship can contact past Pentagon interns and current ISP second years:
WHS could not specify a particular deadline, but students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible to give time to process through the necessary security investigations.
