December events: Yappy Hour and Country Christmas
eaglecity@cityofeagle.org
Eagle is HOME!
Welcome to the holiday season. With Thanksgiving behind us, we have Christmas, Hanukkah and the New Year on the horizon. In Eagle, we start the season with Eagle Country Christmas at Heritage Park on December 10. Kicking off the season with activities galore and the official lighting of the City’s Christmas tree wrapping up the festivities.
I have been ask several times why some of the historic light poles on State Street, Eagle Road and Hill Road are decorated with holiday lights and others are not. The poles wrapped with Christmas lights belong to the City of Eagle, poles without lights belong to businesses or home owners associations. The City owns approximately 150 such poles.
Quite often, a follow up question is: Why do some of the poles have bright white (LED) lights and others have yellowish lights? During the past year or so, the City upgraded the lights to LED for two reasons. First, the LED lights use only a fraction of the electricity as conventional lights. Secondly, LED lights in some cases last for up to 10 years, which reduces replacement and overall maintenance costs. While the upgrades are expensive, they are certainly a long-term savings.
The City Council will meet this month on December 13 at 5:30pm. The meeting normally scheduled for the fourth Tuesday of the month December 27 has been cancelled.

Whether you say: Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah or the term that old Mr. Scrooge used, I wish everyone the best season possible.
Stan Ridgeway, Mayor

Volunteer of the Month - Mountain West Bank, represented by Eagle Branch Manager Debbie Carpenter
The City of Eagle would like to recognize the volunteers of the Mountain West Bank Day of Caring. With their help, three hours of daylight turned into 120 man-hours of trail repairs, mile marker enhancements, and river trail improvements. Our City is a better place because of those willing to serve. This event was a great experience with great results

History of Food Bank - Alana Dunn, Curator, Eagle Historical Museum

The brightly colored leaves of fall and the harvesting of pumpkins, apples, plums, potatoes and other crops lends an air of bounty and contentment to most of us. Unfortunately, there are those that for some reason or another are not the recipients of this bounty of nature. To them, the crisp fall days are a reminder that cold winter days are coming and hunger may be imminent, especially if they have to choose between paying for heat and paying for groceries.

Although Eagle appears to be quite prosperous, there are pockets of poverty here. Some Eagle residents are among those facing the dilemma of heat for the house or groceries for the table.

The answer came when a group of school counselors, school resource officers, and other interested citizens met in the fall of 2005, and formally organized the Eagle Community Charitable Food Bank. Legal services to prepare the articles of incorporation and by-laws were donated by Kimball D. Gourley, and another citizen provided the accounting expertise and filed for non-profit status from the Internal Revenue Service. The small group purchased a cell phone to establish a phone number for the food bank, and members took turns taking the phone to answer any calls. They started operating out of an unheated storage unit provided by Eagle Mini Storage, where shelving was provided by a member of the Eagle Kiwanis Club.

One of the largest misconceptions by most people is that the Eagle Community Charitable Food Bank is somehow connected to the Idaho Food Bank. There is not connection. All food donated to the Eagle Community charitable Food Bank stays here in the Eagle and Star area and is given to local residents. The Eagle Food Bank does not receive any food from the Idaho Food Bank; if they did, they would have to pay for it. So donations of food to the Idaho Food Bank do not help residents of the Eagle area.

Currently the Eagle Community Charitable Food Bank is located at 149 W. State St, Suite 121 in Eagle, across from the US Bank on the east side of the Customedica Pharmacy building.. Their distribution days are the first and third Thursdays of each month, but food boxes can be obtained in emergencies by calling the Food Bank phone, 631-0702. Money donations are always needed, too, to purchase food items for the boxes that are not currently in the stock of donated items; they can be sent to Eagle Community charitable Food Bank, P. O. Box 478, Eagle, Idaho. Also additional volunteer help is needed. Anyone that could help out for several hours on two Thursdays a month is asked to call the Food Bank phone number to volunteer.

The volunteers and board members of the Eagle Community Charitable Food Bank would like to extend their sincere thanks to all the Eagle and Star neighbors who continually donate their food items and money to assure an adequate supply of food to out less-fortunate neighbors. All the time and effort put forth by the volunteers is without cost to the operation. It is truly neighbors helping neighbors.

The Library’s current strategic plan expires in 2017 and library staff are busy working on the next plan.  The strategic plan is the document that guides library activities and we want ours to as accurately reflect the community’s library needs as possible.  Throughout December, the strategic plan survey will be available at the Library’s website (eaglepubliclibrary.org).  The survey will only take a few minutes to complete and we hope that as many Eagle residents as possible will take time to complete it.  In addition to the website, the survey will be available in the library as well as at select community events and locations.  You’re also invited to participate in one of the focus groups which will be held at the library during December.  The focus groups are a great way to express your opinions about the future of the library.  For the complete list of strategic plan focus group opportunities, see the website (eaglepubliclibrary.org).

If you haven’t heard, the library now offers mobile hotspots for two-week checkout periods.  The hotspots allow you to connect a mobile-enabled device, such as a laptop, smartphone, or tablet to the Internet.  Each hotspot allows up to 10 devices to connect at a time and have unlimited data available.  The hotspot is portable, so you can connect your device almost wherever you are, as long as it’s covered by the T-Mobile 3G or 4G network.  For a map of coverage, see http://t-mo.co/113w18U.  Hotspots may be reserved through the library’s catalog at http://tinyurl.com/jdbzllc.

There are a number of ways that the library is delivered directly to you.  Through digital resources such as Hoopla, you have access to e-books, e-audiobooks, streaming music and movies, and e-comics, anytime/anywhere. Start at eaglepubliclibrary.org and select the button for the type of material you want (e-books, e-audiobooks, comics, music, or movies).

And, if you can’t make it into the library due to being confined to your residence either temporarily, due to illness or accident, or permanently due to age, disability, or other mobility issue, you’re likely eligible to participate in the Library’s HouseCalls program, in which library materials are delivered to homebound City of Eagle residents.  Participants in the program may reside in private homes, retirement residences, and assisted living facilities.  Caregivers to a person requiring continuous care are also eligible.  To qualify, all you need is to reside in the City of Eagle and have an Eagle Public Library account in good standing.  If you don’t have a library account, it’s easy to get one.  For more information or to enroll in the service, call the Library at 939-6814 or complete the application at eaglepubliclibrary.org.

There’s a lot going on at the Library this December.  Highlights include:
  • Saturday, December 3, 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm – Build a Gingerbread House.  It’s an annual event at the Library.  Create your own gingerbread house with milk cartons, graham crackers, frosting, and candy.  It’s a treat! Age: all.
  • Saturday, December 10, 2:00 pm – TinkerCAD Basics.  Learn how to create your own 3D object from scratch with this user-friendly CAD program.  Age: adult.
  • Tuesday, December 13, 4:30 pm – Glass Ornament Craft.  Create the most beautiful Christmas ornament ever!  Age: elementary school age.
  • Thursday, December 15, 5:00 pm – Hilarious Gingerbread Men.  Will your gingerbread man reflect your inner hopes or fears?  Maybe it will reflect your inner comic genius!  Find out as you create these holiday favorites.  Age: teen.
  • And, all month long, stop by and see the carved Santa exhibit in the exhibit case.  Local artist Don Brigham’s annual exhibit will put you in the holiday mood.
These are just a few of the many programs during December at your Eagle Public Library.  For a complete listing, see the Library’s calendar or the Library’s website (eaglepubliclibrary.org).

A special visitor! Ann (Slocum) Rissman was the Community Cabinet's honoree this month. She and her daughters came to look at the display where Mayor Ridgeway was able to introduce himself and chat about her service. It turns out Ann served in the same town in Normandy that the Mayor visited last spring!

Pictured here is Mayor Ridgeway with WWII veteran Ann Slocum Rissman of Boise, daughter Ann Rissman Humke of Eagle (behind Ann Sr.) and daughter Ellen Rissman Wong of Yorba Linda, CA.

DECEMBER featured Artist
THE GALLERY at ST Luke's - DAN MOTTAZ
My first artistic work was painting landscapes in the late 1970s. Then I purchased my first camera to assist me in painting remote locations where the painting materials could not go. I would photograph the scene, print the image and paint the picture from the photo. It didn't take long before I got hooked into photography. I soon put painting aside.
Most of my photography concentrated on black and white of varied subjects. I built a darkroom and processed my own prints.
As things go when you are younger, I slowly turned my image making attention to the world of motion pictures. With a college degree in film production, the still camera was put away, making way for a 30 year career in film and video.
A few years before retirement, around 2008, I reintroduced myself to the still camera. This time, instead of film, the medium was digital. Other than the fundamentals of composition, I had to learn an entire new system of making images. It didn't take long before I became nearly obsessed with the world of digital photography, learning all I could from books, extended education classes, workshops and just plain doing it.
I moved to Eagle in 2012 and became an active member in the Camera Club of Eagle as well as the Boise Camera Club where I served as President in 2014.
THE GALLERY at City Hall - Carol Spoor
I was part of a family with varied creative talents, but became interested in testing my creative ability late in life.  While I was a full-time working mom, I took part in classes in oil painting and pastel portraits.  I also dabbled in pencil portraits and colored pencil drawings.
After I retired from working outside my home, I became more active in watercolor painting and became a member of Idaho Watercolor Society.  I have studied with groups headed by Joyce Green during the last three years and enjoy working with other watercolor groups.  I like working with watercolor because of the flexibility it allows in its application.  Patience was never one of my virtues, so the drying speed of watercolor fits my personality.
I paint from things within my own experience.  I paint from photos I’ve taken and saved over my lifetime waiting until I had the ability to turn them into a painting.  I hope to continue learning and developing my skill in watercolor painting.
