1.Question interview: Sue Thaden - President/CEO - From Now On (Part II)
The official statement from Texas AD Perrin on the standing of FB HC Strong, "There are a number of rumors out there about the status of Coach Strong. I've said it all along, we will evaluate the body of work after the regular season. We have a game to get ready for against TCU on Friday, and I hope our fans will come out and support out team. We'll discuss where things stand after that." (link); Austin American-Statesman's Bohls & Davis says the decision has already been made, but no move will be executed until after Friday's match-up, as has been the plan all along supported by Perrin's comments. (link); ESPN's McMurphy reports Strong has seen the reports, but has not been told his tenure is coming to an end. (link)
North Dakota State was awarded the top seed on the FCS Playoffs for the 24-team tourney announced yesterday morning. Illinois State made the field as only the second-ever to have a 6-5 record. The Missouri Valley saw four members as part of the bracket & the OVC with only one. Morehead State AD & chair of the committee Hutchinson, "I think Illinois State's wins against Northwestern and over the automatic qualifier in South Dakota State were very important to the committee." Albany & Fordham were the last two out. (link); The Twitter feed of STATS FCS Senior Editor Haley offers a bit more. (link)
The Chronicle of Higher Ed's Wolverton goes long in a piece you'll want to review in detail titled, "The Myth of the Sports Scholarship." Here's the thesis: "In all but six sports — football, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s gymnastics, women’s tennis, and women’s volleyball — Division I colleges are more limited in how they hand out money. In more than a dozen other sports — including baseball, lacrosse, and soccer — the scholarships don’t come close to covering the full cost of every athlete’s education." Follows the recruiting story of UCLA Women's Swimming commit Goldblatt as she & her parents navigated the financial landscape of offers with some pretty interesting storylines, including how & when some HCs actually have the money conversation. There's a whole bunch here, like HC responses to a North Carolina researcher's questions about athletic scholarships & if student-athletes should be paid. More. (link); An additional note is Wolverton exiting the Chronicle after this week to handle investigative journalism for financial services company, Nerd Wallet. (link)
More FB HC moves & talk: The Advocate's Dellenger indicates LSU could make a decision by next weekend with the focus on Florida State boss Fisher. Additional names mentioned include Houston's Herman, North Carolina's Fedora, Notre Dame's Kelly, Virginia Tech's Fuente, Colorado's MacIntyre, West Virginia's Holgorsen, Oklahoma State's Gundy & interim HC Orgeron. "Money is not expected to be a significant issue for LSU." (link); Lafayette Journal & Courier's Baird says the process at Purdue is also headed toward a potential conclusion in the very near future. Former LSU HC Miles, Western Michigan boss Fleck, former Jacksonville Jaguars OC & Boilermakers AC Olson, Louisiana Tech's Holtz, Air Force's Calhoun & Illinois State's Spack all noted. (link); Presbyterian AD Reese will handle a new hire for the Blue Hose as eight-year boss Nichols has resigned after going 21-67. (link)
WME-IMG co-CEO Emanuel met with President-elect Trump yesterday with discussions believed to center around on Trump's initial appointments. Emanuel is the President-elect's former agent, plus the two did a deal in the Fall of 2015 where WME-IMG acquired the Miss Universe & Miss USA Pageants from Trump. From the Hollywood Reporter, "Trump's first steps as president-elect have alarmed many in Hollywood and on the left, and Emanuel, an outspoken and opinionated figure, may be one of the few contrarian voices that Trump will listen to as he puts together his White House team. WME-IMG declined to comment." (link)
TCU FB student-athlete Moore has officially been named a 2017 Rhodes Scholar. Moore, who carries a 3.9 GPA in the Honors College, will study next fall at Oxford University in England and complete his graduate studies in public policy and business administration. TCU Chancellor Boschini: "We could not be more proud to call you a Horned Frog, and we look forward to witnessing the significant and positive contributions you will make." (link)

The NFL is in Mexico City tonight for the high-profile MNF match-up between the Oakland Raiders & Houston Texans. Security will be tight for the first game in the country in 11 years. Mexico has ~25M NFL fans & growing with an estimated 2.5M kids playing flag football in elementary school & two collegiate leagues with 36 total schools participating. (link); Fortune's Tully writes on the leadership of United Airlines' Munoz as he tries to close the gap on Delta & American. "Here’s why United actually has a shot at a strong comeback: It boasts what’s arguably the best array of hubs of the majors. It is the first- or second-ranking carrier in more of the biggest urban markets than any of its rivals—holding the top spot in Denver, Houston, New York City/Newark, and San Francisco and ranking second in Washington, D.C." (link)

Last night's Athletic Director U. entry may have raised a few eyebrows as economist & anti-trust insider Schwarz penned alongside sports entertainment agent Volante on, "The Fallacy of Fragile Demand for 'Amateurism.'" It's an in-depth & interesting read that should get your wheels turning. The "Exercises for Home Study" at the bottom of the piece are worth considering & include, "Is your commitment to amateurism philosophical or economic? If you are truly committed to the concept of amateurism, even in a market where pay is allowed, you won’t feel tempted to make payments. Right? On the other hand, if pay were allowed and you’d go along, your commitment to amateurism may not be as deep as you think." (link)
The ACC got a record-setting nine teams into the NCAA Men's Soccer Tourney & seven have advanced to the Round of 16, which sets up two all-ACC match-ups with Notre Dame traveling to Louisville & North Carolina to Syracuse. In other men's soccer tournament action, top-seeded Maryland fell to Providence, suffering its first loss of the season, as the Friars rallied from an improbable 4-1 deficit with 20 minutes left in regulation to win, 5-4. (link, link)
USA Today breaks down the ever-fluid bowl eligibility picture with two weeks remaining in the regular season. With wins this past weekend, Kansas State, South Carolina and Kentucky are now in, but it's an "almost certainty" at this point that several 5-7 teams will be needed to fill out the 80 needed for the 40-bowl schedule. And with 5-win teams dependent upon APR, Duke is edging out Northwestern and Vanderbilt in having the inside track to a bowl invitation. (link); Speaking of which, ESPN's McMurphy is reports the NCAA has approved a waiver for South Alabama so that its second FCS win will count toward bowl eligibility, allowing the Jags to go bowling at 5-7. (link)
Florida Atlantic celebrated the unveiling of its new $800K on-campus tennis facility with a ribbon-cutting ceremony this weekend. AD Chun: "It’s a historic day for Florida Atlantic University, a long-awaited dream by many comes to fruition today with the opening of these tennis courts. It can no longer be said that Florida Atlantic University is the only Division I tennis program without on-campus tennis courts." (link); Central Michigan is continuing construction on its new $2M Baseball Performance Development Center, hoping to be done by the start of spring semester. The 7K to 7.5K square-foot, all turf practice facility was made possible by an anonymous donor making a $500K matching donation and then additionally pledging another $500K to match other donations to the facility dollar-for-dollar. (link); Wyoming's coming Mick and Susie McMurry High Altitude Performance Center, is estimated to cost $34.6M to construct. (link)
The Indiana MBB team is preparing to travel to Fort Wayne tomorrow to take on IPFW. It will be the first time in school history that the Mastodons have hosted the Hoosiers. IU HC Crean says the opportunity is a win-win for both schools: "It was an opportunity to involve Fort Wayne, and an opportunity to go on the road at the second-largest city in the state. There is a great IU fan base up there. I know (IPFW officials) are appreciative. I know the fans there are excited." (link)
Some FB TV viewership data from last week's slate. Louisville-Houston was the most-watched Thursday night game of the year with 2.5M viewers & a 1.8 rating. Ohio State-Michigan State on ESPN did a 4.2 overnight, Indiana-Michigan, also on ESPN, recorded a 3.2, CBS' Tennessee-Missouri with a 1.9, UCLA-USC in #Pac12AfterDark on ESPN with a 1.8 & Alabama-UT Chattanooga on ESPN2 did a 1.2. (link); From @SportsTVRatings: "per ESPN the 1.8 for USC/UCLA was the best overnight rating of 2016 for a game starting at 10p ET or later on any net." (link)
Cable TV is losing one of its most-watched programs as A&E's Duck Dynasty will end its run in mid-April after the conclusion of its 11th season. "The series, which has faced its share of controversy during its run, ranked as the most-watched nonfiction series in cable history and, according to A&E, remains the No. 1 series on the network among total viewers." (link); Another good read from the Hollywood Reporter that paints a good picture of competition for talent in the TV marketplace & how the likes of Netflix & Amazon are more than willing to shell out big bucks to key talent to grab a slice of the marketplace. Star De Niro is getting $750K per episode for a new show on Amazon, $850K per for leading female Streep on Netflix, lots more. (link)
Thoughts & prayers are with the Florida State family as Senior Assoc. AD for Internal Operations & longtime Seminoles leader Bonasorte passed away after a fight with brain cancer. AD Wilcox: "Monk was a devoted, highly-respected athletics staff member who was beloved by all who came to know him. […] His strength, experience and courage were invaluable. FSU may have lost one of its brightest stars but the legacy that Monk leaves will endure in all of our hearts and minds forever." (link)
The newly-formed Bears for Leadership Reform, a group of alumni and high-profile donors, is continuing to push Baylor's Board of Regents to become more open and transparent, especially in regards to the handling of the recent sexual assault scandal and subsequent Pepper Hamilton recommendations. The group formed to pressure the board to ditch its "bunker mentality" and "culture of secrecy" and adopt measures of transparency, disclosure, and leadership reform, including releasing minutes and agendas from the past five years of meetings. Donor John Eddie Williams explained the group's focus: "As members of the Baylor family, this is about leadership reform. We’ve got to change the culture, we’ve got to fix the problem and we think the way to do that is to change the leadership." (link)
Syracuse is reporting average attendance for FB home games this season was the second-lowest its been during the Carrier Dome era. However, the season average of 32,805 in HC Babers' first season was an improvement over last year when the Orange averaged 32,102. The Carrier Dome opened in 1980 to average crowds of 43,635. SU officials are hoping to boost attendance by making several changes, including lowering prices for season-ticket holders, allowing season-ticket renewals three months earlier than usual and allowing fans to use payment plans. SU also uncoupled football and basketball tickets and improved food options in recent weeks. (link); With Lehigh finishing in the top three for FB home attendance in the Patriot League for the past two years, the factors that help and hurt attendance at Goodman Stadium are explored. MoCos, a student tradition based on drinking alcohol the morning of game day at off-campus houses, and the stadium's location are said to have the biggest negative impact on attendance, while a new tailgating system implemented this season has seemed to have a positive impact on the numbers. (link)
Snapchat's Spectacles are gaining steam around the nation as the social media company has placed vending machines at unique locations from the West Coast to Tulsa to promote the new hardware play, which can record 10-seconds of snap-able content & sync it with an account. The Information's Lessin got her hands on some for a review, found the physical execution to be good enough & the simplicity of being able to press a button on the glasses to record really useful as she snapped many moments she may not have otherwise with her phone. "Snap has also done something else beyond catalyzing mobile video. The company has created a wearable computing device people may actually use after the novelty wears off." (link)
Around Higher Ed: St. Bonaventure brass tab LeMoyne Dean DePerro as its new President. (link); No indication on what it means, but Tennessee had Cincinnati Interim Prez Davenport back on it Knoxville campus for a second time last Friday. Davenport is one of three finalists for the Chancellor spot at UT. (link); No word on what job he's taken, but outgoing Ohio Prez McDavis is no longer in the mix at Florida Gulf Coast as he's reportedly accepted another gig. (link); Candidate names & profiles in the coming Western Michigan Presidential search will be kept under lock & key. (link)
Also noticed: Delaware Field Hockey won its first National Championship. AD Rawak says "there wasn't any doubt" about the quality program HC van de Kerkhof was building. (link); Did we already know (or correctly assume) Eastman & Beaudine was handling the Baylor FB HC search? (link); An incentive of a different kind: Darius Rucker will hold a concert on campus at South Carolina after a Twitter back & forth with Prez Pastides in the summer based on FB reaching the six-win mark. (link); NFL TV ratings aren't the only thing looking for a bounce back post-election, online retail was hit to the tune of $800M during the two weeks around the election. (link); Stanford FB beat Cal on Saturday in the 'Big Game,' but you may not know that the Cardinal also defeated the Golden Bears in a high-profile League of Legends match-up. Check out what amounts to the game recap. It's like a foreign language to me, but very well could become the norm in short order as eSports continues vertical. (link)
Quick correction: Yesterday's D1.ticker noted Maryland's hire of new Director of Student-Athlete Engagement & Professional Development Williams, who is not technically transitioning from the Nebraska department as he perviously exited Lincoln 15 months ago.
