NCATS Releases Bold Strategic Plan

NCATS’ new strategic plan is organized into four overarching themes: translational science, collaboration and partnerships, education and training, and stewardship. The themes are captured in the strategic goals and collectively provide an overview of what the Center plans to accomplish to achieve its mission of getting more treatments to more patients more quickly. NCATS and Promega Host Assay Guidance Workshop

In October 2016, NCATS and Promega scientists hosted an Assay Guidance Workshop for High-Throughput Screening and Lead Discovery in Madison, Wisconsin. More than 40 researchers from academia, government and industry participated in the workshop, which featured presenters with decades of experience in pre-clinical drug discovery and clinical trial recruitment. CTSA Program-Supported Scientist Wins Prestigious Grant

Stanford University bioengineer Manu Prakash received a 2016 MacArthur Foundation five-year “genius grant.” Prakash, whose work is partly funded by Spectrum, the Stanford Center for Clinical and Translational Research and Education, created the Foldscope, a paper-and-glass microscope that costs less than $1 to make and is used worldwide. Research on New Test Identifies Drugs for Antibiotic Resistance

NCATS’ Wei Zheng, Ph.D., and other NIH scientists developed a new test to rapidly screen thousands of drugs against a variety of resistant bacteria. The research team identified 25 potential therapies that suppressed the growth of two drug-resistant strains of Klebsiella pneumonia ― a source of fatal infections, including in hospitals nationwide.
