Press Release: CAHME Releases New Standards for Healthcare Management Education

The 2016 election highlighted the ongoing change that is inherent in healthcare.  The management of this change is the responsibility of the dedicated men and women who, behind the scenes of the clinical setting, bring their leadership and management skills to ensure the success in healthcare organizations.  Many healthcare leaders learn their unique skills in graduate programs in healthcare administration – programs that are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME).

To ensure that the graduates of those programs continue to be well prepared to lead the change vital to individual health and that or the population at large, the CAHME Board of Directors unanimously approved revisions to their accreditation criteria for these programs.  During a one-year process, leaders from academia, employers and the public provided valuable input to the criteria review process.   Following the Board’s decision on November 14, 2016, the revised criteria is effective at the start of the 2017-2018 academic year.

CAHME’s mission is to serve the public interest by advancing the quality of healthcare management education.  The revised criteria will further this mission by fostering quality and innovation in graduate education in healthcare management. They will also further the competency-based approach to education on which CAHME accreditation is based and will continue to advance already successful student outcomes.  Graduates of CAHME accredited programs enjoy an average 95% employment placement rate and are among the top leaders in healthcare.

Anthony C Stanowski, DHA, CAHME President and CEO stated:  “This revision of the accreditation criteria reflects the input of those in the community of scholars in academia and in the employer communities.  Their participation and dedication in this process furthers our commitment to ensure the highest quality education for the next generation of healthcare leaders”.

Daniel J. West, PhD., Board Chair of CAHME, and Professor & Chairman in the Department of Health Administration and Human Resources at the University of Scranton noted: “We are deeply appreciative of the dedicated professionals and members of the public who worked to review and revise the CAHME accreditation standards.  The end result is an even deeper commitment to continuous quality improvement in graduate programs in healthcare management throughout the U.S. and Canada. The revised criteria enable those in academia to prepare the next generation of healthcare leaders for the challenges they will face in working through the change expected in healthcare, to insure that all those who need care are able to receive it.”
