The surroundings have changed but the needs haven’t
Do you believe nobody should give up their education because of poverty? That’s what Barts and The London stood for in Victorian times, and it’s a battle we’re still fighting today. Take Uche, who finished his medical studies last year. He was living in homeless hostels until a bursary helped with accommodation. He told us: “I can’t put into words how grateful I am. Staying in hostels where you have to share a bathroom with 12 other families isn’t a very good environment for study and focus. I’ve seen a lot of friends go down the wrong path and subsequently end up in gangs, in prison or dead. Thanks to alumni help, I could rent student accommodation right next to the university and could focus on my exams. I can’t explain how much of a relief this was.” You can help too. By giving now to help someone like Uche, you can give them a fantastic future. Imagine the weight you’ll lift from someone’s shoulders, and the smile on their face. Your kindness could make a difference for a lifetime. Thank you!
BATLAA awards support students
In the 2015-16 academic year, your generosity provided 15 medical students and nine dental students with elective bursaries enabling the recipients to experience medical and dental practice in a working, and often international, environment. Your support also enabled us to provide five students with bursaries for their Intercalated Degrees. In addition, three students are currently in receipt of the Dental Excellence Scholarship, which is awarded in the first three years of study. Your support makes a real difference and is much appreciated; thank you!
