Dr. Prasher Uses Agricultural Waste to Remove Heavy Metals in Wastewater

Before being released into open water bodies, municipal wastewater is often treated to remove harmful suspended solids and lower the biological oxygen demand. However, wastewater may still contain substantial amounts of heavy metals even after these primary and secondary treatments.

Dr. Prasher and his team have developed a unique method to remove heavy metals from wastewater using agricultural waste.  The team uses biochar, a material produced by burning rice husks, rice straw, and plantain peels without open flames in controlled environments.   The end result is a carbon rich material that is highly absorptive and can be used as a passive, wastewater treatment solution.

By using waste as a resource, biochar is a very simple solution to wastewater contamination with minimal costs and a high level of impact.

Congratulations to our HQP Grant Winners

IC-IMPACTS congratulates Zahra Kharal of University of Toronto and Shervin Khazaeli of Concordia University on being awarded HQP Leadership Grants.

Zahra is developing a full day workshop in March 2017 on GFRP Reinforced Concrete for Sustainable Infrastructure.  Shervin is putting together a workshop in June 2017 on Smart Systems and Sensors across the Infrastructure, Water, and Health sectors.

Both student-led workshops will feature leading researchers, industry representatives, and other leading speakers.  More information will be shared as the workshops continue to be developed.

Making an Impact in the Real World

Thu, Dec 1, 2016 7:00pm PST

Join us as two IC-IMPACTS alumni share their observations and experiences on implementing innovative ideas and products in the marketplace.

Shreesha Jagadeesh is a Prototyping Engineer with ChipCare Inc, a company developing point-of-care devices for detecting infection diseases in resource-limited settings.

Akshay Singhal is a PhD candidate at IIT Roorkee and is also the Founder and CEO of Log 9 Materials, a nano-materials manufacturing and R&D startup.

Dr. Sriram, Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University, will be moderating the session and will speak to the challenges of implementing technological innovations at the community level.

A Warn Welcome to our new SEC Members

IC-IMPACTS is proud to introduce new members from the Student Engagement Committee (SEC).

The SEC’s goal is to meet evolving student needs and to improve your experience as a member of an international applied research project. It is also intended to serve as a think tank providing IC-IMPACTS with feedback and input on specific issues.

The SEC select monthly webinar topics for the entire student network, develop programming for in-person workshops and Summer Institutes, and create new approaches to uniquely engage the IC-IMPACTS student network.  Click the image above to learn more about the SEC.

Participatory Approaches & Decision Support Systems

Thu, Jan 19, 2017 8:00am PST

This webinar will explore how participatory approaches and Decision Support Systems (DSS) could be brought together to improve planning processes, and how it could be adapted in applied research projects.

Participatory approaches and computerised tools such as decision support systems, were developed and primarily used in the management field as a tool to facilitate organizational processes.

Julien Malard is a PhD candidate at McGill University. His current research involves the use of system dynamics models to evaluate the sustainability of alternative agricultural development approaches. Julien will provide insights and share his experience working with community members.
