1.Question interview: David Matlin - Athletic Director - Hawaii
Clemson AD Radakovich inks a new deal that could keep him with the Tigers through June of 2022. No financial terms noted. Prez Clements: "Dan is without a doubt one of the best ADs in the country and I’m proud of the work our student-athletes have done in the classroom and around our community under his leadership. We’ve seen incredible progress in our athletic facilities and tremendous successes on the field over the last four years, and I’m thrilled Dan wants to continue to serve at Clemson for a long time." (link)
New Georgia Tech AD Stansbury's first official day in Atlanta will be next Monday. Interim AD Griffin: "We'll double team for most of the month of December. I'll probably take care of all the bowl procedural details and help him as he needs." More Griffin, on his second stint as the temporary boss for the Yellow Jackets, "Grateful for it to come to a close." (link)
Former La Salle AD Brennan is the new AD at DII Goldey-Beacom in Wilmington, Delaware. "Sometimes change is really good for the soul and I felt like I had pretty much accomplished or at least contributed what I could to La Salle. The Goldey-Beacom athletics program is by no means fully developed. They still have a lot of room for growth and potential, and that was stated to me pretty clearly." Former AD Hammond is now Dean of Students, "To say we have our sights set on going Division I, that really wasn’t a consideration at all. It was more his experiences at a high level. We felt he could take those experiences and shape the next chapter of Goldey-Beacom College athletics for us." (link)
Baylor Assoc. AD for Communications Nielsen, who has been noticeably absent from the FB team for weeks, is free on bond after being charged with assault with bodily injury (a class A misdemeanor) for allegedly grabbing a sportswriter by the throat following the Bears November 5 loss to TCU. In an incident apparently captured by stadium cameras, Nielsen said the sportswriter was "abusing his privileges" by attempting to take a photo of a student-athlete on the field after the game. The sportswriter has not decided whether or not to pursue charges, but believes Nielsen should "lose his job hands down." (link)
The latest TIDES report from the team at UCF on the makeup of leadership in higher education & college athletics is out. "At the 128 FBS schools, white men hold 75.8 percent of school president jobs, and 78.9 percent of athletic director positions […] Nearly 90 percent of faculty athletic representatives are white; 30 percent of those are women. There were five women of color who are faculty athletic representatives. [...] Of athletic directors, women hold 7 percent of the jobs, with people of color holding 14.1 percent of the jobs. Nine of 10 conference commissioners were white men -- only Judy MacLeod, who heads Conference USA, is not." (link); Full report. (link)
Houston Board of Regents chair & billionaire Fertitta: "We’ll make other adjustments and other wants and needs that are important to him, and we’ll do whatever it takes to keep Tom Herman as the football coach at the University of Houston, but if Tom Herman decides he wants to leave, head football coaches today of Tom’s caliber don’t usually leave because of money. They leave because they think they have a better chance of competing for national championships. You got to understand, our athletics director (Hunter Yurachek) and Tom’s agent, they talk all through the year. We’ve made it real clear to Tom Herman and his agent that we don’t want to lose you over financial items. We can’t promise you certain things, but we’re going to do whatever it takes to keep you. We’re not going to let you leave over financial matters. I absolutely do not think it’s a forgone conclusion that we’re going to lose our coach." (link); Herman: "No distraction at all." (link)
SBD/SBJ's Smith writes on Duke's $100M+ upgrade of Wallace Wade Stadium. Deputy AD for Operations Cragg: "This is our once-in-a-lifetime chance to do it right. We’re not going to go back and say, ‘Oh, gosh, we should have done this.’ This is it. That’s why it really was a six-year process. At the end of the day, we’re still a small, private school. We’re not going to go tear something down and do it again. It’s a one-time shot." The new 16- & 20-person suites went for $42K to $55K per season, club seat donation started at $1,200 per, in total more than $2M of revenue generated from those angles. Eight naming rights deals of $10M+ have been moved around the new digs. The Colonnade Group is handling all the premium spaces, more. (link)
Staying with the Blue Devils, Duke & Notre Dame are in the crosshairs of plaintiff attorneys in the Jenkins & Alston cases as they've filed to have both universities turn over records connected to TV & sponsorship deals. Winston & Strawn partner Feher: "The millions and billions of dollars paid under these contracts are directly relevant to the consumer demand for the performances of these athletes, as the California court has already decided. There is no reason for Duke or Notre Dame to get any special treatment." Trial dates could be in late '17 or early '18. (link)
Maybe they'll talk some business. Big 12 Commish Bowlsby & Fox Sports Prez Shanks are both a part of the Joint Civilian Orientation Conference run by the Department of Defense, though they weren't aware the other was involved until seeing each other on the first day of exercises in D.C. SBD/SBJ's Ourand: "The Defense Department goes for influential leaders in their professions, organizations and communities … to bring together a geographical, professional and cultural cross-section of influential Americans who are leaders in their fields.'" (link)
Tennessee has tabbed Cincinnati Interim Prez Davenport as the new Chancellor in Knoxville, who will be come the first female leader in university history. Base pay for Davenport in Year 1 will be $585K with an additional $95K in compensation & up to $87K+ of incentive potential. Eastern Kentucky FB student-athlete Swafford earned the prestigious Mitchell Scholarship, the Irish equivalent to the Rhodes version here in the States, & did so on an interview schedule that returned him to Richmond barely an hour before quarterbacking the Colonels last Saturday versus Eastern Illinois. (link); Good read on the current state & future of the Great Alaska Shootout with a budget that's down from $1M to $753K amid fiscal challenges in The Last Frontier. Play begins tomorrow for a field headlined by three squads that made the NCAA Tourney last year: Buffalo, Weber State & Iona. (link)

This piece got a ton of play yesterday as the Wall Street Journal's Ramachandran reported Amazon has been working hard to add key sports streaming rights to its growing Prime platform. All the major professional leagues noted, as was the ACC & Campus Insiders. The overall narrative isn't much different from why other content players want to get their hands on rights. But, consider too that Amazon's end goal may not be to make a boatload of money off streaming, but simply add more customers to its Prime membership ranks & keep them in the ecosystem longer/more frequently & aid the bottom line of its overall business model. ACC Digital VP/GM Swofford: "My sense is they are interested in anything that might be out there." (link)
Duke has promoted Deputy Director of Athletics/CFO Moser, who has been in Durham for 20 years, to Deputy Director of Athletics/Resource Development and Management/CFO. AD White on Moser's promotion: "This enhanced title appropriately reflects Mitch’s current job responsibilities. We have long asked Mitch to be a leader relative to accomplishing an ambitious vision, while being an excellent steward of financial resources, both current and prospective, with the serious intent to be a 'best in class' Division I department of athletics." (link); Tennessee has promoted Asst. AD for Event Management Elliott to Assoc. AD for Event Management. Elliott, who has been a full-time member of UT's staff since 1993, played a major role in the Battle at Bristol game at Bristol Motor Speedway in September, which drew a record crowd of 156,990. (link)
More HC talk & moves: Tennessee has hired AC & former Vols stand-out Ojeda as its new Women's Tennis HC. (link); A Tiger Athletic Fund member on the situation at LSU, "Everyone wants Jimbo. I just hope Jimmy Sexton doesn't price us out of it." Florida State Prez Thrasher: "Jimbo and I talk frequently, and based on that, he is happy here and wants to stay. He's given me no reason to think differently." (link); UC Davis AD Blue will make a big hire as FB HC Gould will exit after going 12-33 in four seasons. (link); Lamar AD Henderson will do the same in Beaumont. (link); Northwestern State AD Burke won't as HC Thomas will return, but changes will be made to the staff. (link); Delaware AD Rawak on her FB opening, "We’re going to look to start interviewing relatively soon." (link); Pitt FB HC Narduzzi is confident the Panthers can hold on to OC Canada because of support from Prez Gallagher & AD Barnes. (link); Arizona HC Rodriguez knows his program has had a really rough year, but says all conversations with AD Byrne have been positive. (link)
The $160M renovation project to Razorback Stadium at Arkansas is technically underway. Senior Assoc. AD for External Freet: "Probably before December you will start to see the video board in the North end zone start to come down. We're going to take that scoreboard down and we're actually going to put it in the South end of the stadium and we will add a new scoreboard in the North end zone." One unique facet of the venue that will remain is the open northeast corner where fans can look into the facility from above. (link)
With the help of the Conway Area Chamber of Commerce and the Advertising & Promotion Commission, Central Arkansas was able to submit a guaranteed bid of $60K for the first-round FCS Playoffs game it will host, which is $30K more than the minimum bid needed. AD Teague explained the university's strategy: "If you play a first-round game, you go on the road against a seeded team the second round, so we bid big for the first-round game, the minimum for the second round and big, big for the other two. Bids ranged from $30,000 to $200,000 for a school with a large stadium." (link)
Even though we're still quite a ways from Baseball season & the next round of HC movement on the diamond, this interesting survey from D1Baseball.com is worth keeping in mind as coaches voted on the best recruiters in the nation. Garnering 117 total points (42 more than the second-place finisher), TCU AC Saarloos, who was also named the 2016 Assistant Coach of the Year by D1Baseball, was the runaway winner. Arkansas AC Vitello, Virginia AC McMullan, Ole Miss AC Lafferty and former LSU AC and new Mississippi State HC Cannizaro rounded out the top 5. (link)
Forde-Yard Dash from Yahoo's Forde is always a popular read & he published early this week. "The best thing that could happen to the new coach/Herman would for the industry speculation be true about Oliver Luck leaving the NCAA and becoming the next Texas AD. Luck at least knows that job, having done it with distinction at West Virginia, and would seemingly have the clout to operate the department with less outside noise filtering in." Goes in on the rivalry games coming up, including the prediction of Western Michigan edging Toledo to complete its undefeated season. More. (link)
Texas FB HC Strong said he wants to return to Austin for another season, continues to point to conversations with UT brass after Friday's match-up with TCU. Fox Sports lead Felman writes on why Strong's job was "unsavable." Feldman points to sources who says many student-athletes are blaming themselves for the situation, more. (link); An impressive number of Strong's student-athletes showed up at the presser in a show of support. Here are some pics & videos. (link, link, link); There's was talk early yesterday of a boycott of the TCU game, but that angle seemed to die down quickly. (link)
An NFL officiating explanation that has ties to the college game, as NFL Senior VP of Officiating Blandino explains how officials still miss calls despite the use of instant replay: "The basic foundation of replay is to fix the obvious mistake. We’re not re-officiating the play in replay, we’re not there to fix every potential mistake. It’s to fix the obvious error. And if it’s not obvious, we’re not going to overturn the call on the field." Blandino goes on for several minutes in one of his weekly videos reviewing the biggest calls from the previous week about the league's approach to high-leverage situations. (link)
A look at Michigan State licensing, about which Director of Licensing Stevens says: "We see licensing as an opportunity to showcase our brand outside of the university setting. The more we can grow the brand in the retail space, the more recognition the university receives." MSU aims to accomplish this aim through relationship development, traveling to licensee and retailer sites, and hosting retail summits, "talk about business and the unique things MSU does and what our school is all about." Newest event will be a Retail Appreciation Event at January's Sports Licensing and Tailgate Show. Feature piece also notes benefits provided by CLC, about which Stevens says "we've already seen a significant increase in shelf space." (link)
Despite a drop in enrollment over the last five years, Montana has still been able to build a new academic center and Softball stadium recently, as well as starting construction on the Champions Center, which will feature new locker rooms and weight rooms, thanks to private donations. AD Haslam, "...philanthropy is going to play a bigger and bigger role in public universities," moving forward and that he is "...grateful that we have donors and folks step up to help us in those ways." (link)
There continues to be talk in the Albany-Siena MBB rivalry, as Great Danes HC Brown wonders aloud about Saints HC Patsos' claim that his team will never return to SEFCU Arena: "Is he the president of Siena?" Patsos was a bit more muted than in previous weeks, saying he doesn't want the rivalry to go away, noting that "I don't set policy." More from Brown on the back-and-forth: "This is not me taking shots. It's me defending my program, me defending my athletic department, me defending my program and me defending my fans. If he wants to have fun with me, that's fine. If he comes out with more dumb remarks, I am not going to get into it." (link)
Also noticed: Alabama & Duke will meet in the Chik-Fil-A Kickoff game in Atlanta in 2019. (link); Lehigh has upgraded Stabler Arena with new digital boards. (link); Pretty cool red, white & blue lights inside the State Farm Center at Illinois for the playing of the National Anthem. (link); Fox Sports in on board with the new Direct TV Now service & 4K broadcasts. (link); From the Lexington Herald Leader's Smith: "There's a note on U of L media sheet that Louisville players, coaches are not available to Kentucky media this week. Never seen that before." (link); Instagram now has live video & Stories. Sound familiar? (link)
Quick correction: I can't count. Eight ACC teams made the NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament Round of 16, not seven. Fifty percent of the remaining 16 isn't too shabby.

Between the Maui Invitational that tipped yesterday & the over-Christmas Diamond Head Classic, we'll all get a fair dose of palm trees & beach on TV while watching hoops over the holidays. Appropriately, here's a 1.Q throwback with Hawaii AD, David Matlin on why UH's geography is both it's most significant benefit, but also it's most significant challenge. Additional topics covered: How to handle the acute media coverage of "being the state's team," characteristics that his successful HCs exhibit, how his coaches have to weigh the factor of potential home sickness in prospective student-athletes & more. Listen by clicking the link. - link (length - 6:52)
