News from the British Cryogenic Cluster:
Planning Ahead

November 2016

With the clocks changing and the year drawing to an end, we can report some progress on plans for the New Year, going beyond Hogmanay and Burns Night.

It looks like the BCC Jubilee on May 24 will be celebrated in Oxford, which may be a taster for ICEC 27 in 2018. And planning has begun for next year’s Cluster Day at STFC’s Daresbury Laboratory on Wednesday September 20.

New Members

A Very Warm Welcome to Hazchem Safety. Established in 1978, with Head Offices in Brackley (home to a good football team too) Hazchem began supplying safety signs for road transport and logistics, expanding to international supply of specialist signage and safety equipment to the hazardous substance and petrochemical industry.

News in Helium

Three American Scientific Societies (APS, ACS and MRS) have published a report on the US Research Community’s Liquid Helium Crisis, summarised here. It could be seen as parochial and late, but at least they are attempting to develop US Helium Policy. (Does Europe or the UK have one ?) They’ve also launched a website : conserve-helium.org/.

We just learned that Cluster Member Air Products helped English TV Channel 4 back in September get a human-propelled, helium-filled airship across the Channel.

News in LNG & LEG

As Australia closes in on Qatar on LNG production, the FT quotes ‘rampant cost inflation’ and collapse in pricing. $50 billion cost over-runs are put down to insufficient planning and growing complexity.

Chart has a new patent for its Liquefaction Technology.

News in Science & Healthcare

ESRF published this piece on magnetic refrigeration and the interplay between magnetism and chemical bonding.

Here’s a piece from the American National Academy of Sciences on Interface-induced superconductivity at ∼25 K at ambient pressure in undoped CaFe2As2 single crystals.

This probably isn’t cryogenics (though it’s close to cryotherapy) but it does involve cooling, and we hope, is interesting …

Artificial spin ices are frustrated magnetic nanostructures where single domain nanobars act as macrosized spins – got that ? More (from attocube) at nature.com.

The first 110-tonne ITER toroidal field winding pack is nearing transfer to SIMIC for cold testing.

Professor Graham Machin (NPL) who spoke at Cluster Day, drew our attention to Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A “Towards Implementing the new kelvin” 374, 28 March 2016. Free access to “Towards Implementing the new kelvin” papers and other Royal Society material may now have expired, but the library contains some very historic papers, including Kelvin’s original papers on absolute temperature (1850s) and others (early 1700s) on early experiments with thermometry.

Cryo Biz

Australian Cryofin has patented its new CryoTHOR line of vaporisers and is "actively looking for partners to take its new technology to the global market."

There’s a story in African Business on the ‘tomato emergency’ in Nigeria which leads to Solar Powered Cold Storage from Cold Hubs.

Auguste Cryogenics in Kosice, Slovakia has acquired Taylor-Wharton’s European business.

The Demcon Group has acquired University of Twente spinout company Kryoz Technologies.

Enterprise Europe Network has identified a Dutch company seeking partners to co-develop a technology for upgrading biogas to methane and food grade quality CO2. A UK company is also seeking manufacturers for their high performance polymer coating solutions.

Events & Education

Events The 7^th Cryo-Ops workshop at Fermilab was well supported with 10 participants from UK (5 from Rutherford Appleton, 3 from Daresbury and 1 each from Wessington and Diamond Light.)

We understand the Cryogenic Society of Europe will hold next year’s European Cryogenics Days (ECD17) in conjunction with the International Workshop on Cooling for HTS Applications, co-organized by CSE & KIT in Karlsruhe on Sep 13-15.

In a crowded September, Cluster Day will overlap with EUCAS in Geneva (September 17-21.)
