Summer 2016 Kent ISD MTSS Update
Kent ISD is committed to providing a continuum of supports for local districts as they implement an integrated academic and behavioral Multi-Tier System of Supports (MTSS) framework. Our team works to develop local leadership teams who facilitate and support quality systems reviews resulting in sustainable changes that increase achievement for ALL students.
MTSS Impact
  • As a result of Kent ISD's intentional focus on continuous improvement, our capacity to implement MTSS with fidelity was maintained at 85% from winter to fall on the Regional Capacity Assessment.
  • Our implementation team is now supporting seven local districts to increase their MTSS implementation capacity. On average their scores on the District Capacity Assessment increased by over 20 percentage points from Fall 2015 to Fall 2016.
  • Last spring we introduced new fidelity measures for both PBIS and School-Wide Reading Systems. 46% of buildings met the target score for fidelity of PBIS Implementation in the spring. This fall 57% of buildings met the target!
  • In case you missed it, this School News Network article describes the positive impact MTSS can have on students and families.
What's Next?
  • This fall Kent ISD's MTSS team facilitated four full days of data reviews for teams from Caledonia, Kentwood, Lowell, and Grandville. Hope Academy and Caledonia High School will begin the data review process this winter!
  • Kent ISD is supporting Lighthouse Academy to implement PBIS throughout their residential and juvenile justice facilities. Teams from two Lighthouse campuses attended the National PBIS Forum in Chicago where they deepened their knowledge and skills. We are hopeful they will be presenting their successes at a future forum!
  • In January teams from Godwin Heights Middle School and Godwin Heights High School will begin to learn about and install PBIS systems in their buildings.
  • Kentwood and Thornapple Kellogg will send teams from their buildings to Tier 3 Behavior training. They will be the first of our districts to complete all three tiers of behavior system training.

Expanding MTSS at Kent ISD

In order to best meet the needs of our customers and to expand the implementation of MTSS throughout the county, our internal MTSS team has doubled in size with the addition of four new members. The team is in the process of developing individualized Coaching Service Delivery Plans for the District Implementation Teams from each of our seven partnering districts.
