The Brown Stitch Newsletter: Issue 3

Issue #3: New patterns and tutorials

Fall is coming to a close, and that means we are officially in winter knitting season. It’s time to get cozy and get some projects on the needles! In this issue I’m highlighting 2 new pattern releases, a three needle bind-off tutorial, a pompom tutorial and some quick holiday knitting ideas.

What's New

Meet East Coast Swing. It's a dk-weight, swingy A-line vest that features wide front panels that wrap around the back of the shoulders for a modern silhouette. This pattern is very suitable for beginner knitters - it features very basic stitches and the only slightly intermediate technique used is the Three Needle Bind-Off which is used to put together the piece. This is one of my favorite techniques and is found in many of my patterns. Because of this, I have created a photo tutorial on how to do it (see further down in the newsletter).

The Mainer Cowl is a simple, textured cowl - perfect for when you have just 1 skein of worsted-weight yarn. I used the Maine-made One Lupine “West Branch” yarn, exclusively available at KnitWit Yarn Shop in Portland. It’s a great little pattern for any worsted-weight yarn that will feel good against your skin. And it’s perfect for knitting beginners too!

Many of my patterns use the Three Needle Bind-Off Technique. It can sound intimidating but it's actually quite easy. Click the "View Tutorial" button below to view a photo tutorial on my website.

Knitting Tips
I've noticed that pompoms are everywhere this season! Over the years I have tried many different types of methods and devices and so far the best one I have found is the Clover Pompom Maker. There are some instructions included in the package but I have found that they are quite brief and often people are still left a bit confused as to how to operate this tool. So I created a step-by-step photo tutorial on my website that will walk you through the whole process.

Holiday Knitting Ideas
If you plan to do some holiday knitting this month, I've put together a few ideas of some of my patterns that make great gifts (and also don't take too long to knit up!)
Last Minute Lucy is a 3 pattern collection that all uses super bulky-weight yarn or regular bulky-weight yarn held double. It features a scarf, cowl and buttoned neck warmer and all knit up in just an evening or two!
Midcoast Mitts make a great gift because anyone who lives in a cold climate needs a pair and they are great for men and women. They are quick to make and typically take just 1 skein of worsted-weight yarn.
Gray Street cowl features an interesting but easy stitch pattern and uses bulky-weight yarn. You can use 3 different colors like in the photo, or do a 2-color version or solid.
Gulf of Maine uses 3 different colors of worsted-weight yarn and simple garter stitch in the round makes this great tv-watching or knit group knitting.

Here are some favorite finished projects of my patterns from Ravelry! Thank you to those featured for allowing me to use your beautiful pictures.

Emma from the UK knit up this beautiful version of Ponchetta using Rowan Pure Wool Worsted for her friend Julia, who is beautifully modeling it!
Lisa from Australia knit up the Ramona Cardigan using Knit Picks Wool of the Andes. I love this picture and how well her cat is posing in it!
Jodi from New Hampshire knit up the Margo Poncho is Quince & Co's Osprey yarn. I was working at KnitWit Yarn Shop the day she came in to find the yarn so it was fun to help her pick it out and see the finished product too!
Eleanor, a customer of ours at KnitWit Yarn Shop, walked in a few weeks ago wearing the Nordic Trail vest and I absolutely love her alteration - she made it much longer and I love the look!
Stephanie, owner of Dirty Water Dyeworks, knit up the Coastal Gradient cowl out of her Lillian yarn. Brown and shades of mustard...my all-time favorite!
