All WWFHA players have the chance to skate and talk with Michelle Picard, a defenseman for the professional National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL) -- NY Riveters, the big-sister team to WWFHA. Michelle will be in town specifically to work with all Washington Wild from December 28 – 31, as a WWFHA Honoary Board member.

This fabulous opportunity to learn from a professional female hockey player comes to you courtesy of hard work and donated airline miles, accommodations, and transportation from multiple WWFHA members. Thank you to all those who contributed to turn this dream into a reality!

Registration for this free event will be posted soon, along with the opportunity to buy a Michelle Picard shirtsey (shirt jersey) for her to sign (a portion of the proceeds goes to the players).

NY Riveters Shout Out to the Washington Wild 8U Team!

Twitter blew up on Sunday with so many NY Riveter players tweeting about the letters they received from the 8U Washinton Wild team members, including WWFHA Honorary Board member -- Michelle Picard! No coincidence that the Riveters notched their first shut-out in franchise history, defeating the CT Whale 4-0  and moving into 2nd place behind the Boston Pride. Many of the players tweeted #goodluckcharm as they read the letters from the 8U team prior to the game. They clearly enjoyed hearing from their little sisters on the west coast! NEW: Washington Wild Team Wrap Ring – Exclusive, Order Before Nov. 29!

Get your exclusive Washington Wild Wrap Ring for the holidays, when ordering before November 29th. A portion of the sale goes to the financial aid / scholarship fund.

Each ring is handcrafted from aluminum with each letter of ‘Washington Wild’ stamped into the metal. The ring is fully adjustable from size 2 to 10.

More details:
  • Each letter is stamped by hand into the metal for one of a kind character
  • Handcrafted from aluminum which is lightweight, hypoallergenic and will not tarnish
  • Ring measures 1/4" wide
Hand stamping is a process where each letter is individually stamped into the metal. Each letter may not line up perfectly and some letters may be deeper than the others. This is not to be considered a defect and adds to the charm of each piece. This process is much deeper than engraving.

The cost is $18.45 each and can be ordered by going to the Washington Wild Team store - click here.
There will be no re-order for this ring this year.

The Experts’ Edge

6 Life Lessons from the Cubs in the World Series

Culture eats strategy for breakfast is a mantra at PCA, driving the way we build and maintain our organizational culture and the way we help school and youth sports organization leaders do the same. Culture is key for the Cubs – from the Ricketts family ownership team upgrading facilities for the players, to the patience with Theo Epstein’s five-year plan to the hiring of Joe Maddon, who creates the Cubs’ clubhouse culture.

“Pressure is a privilege” – a phrase coined by Billie Jean King – morphed into Maddon’s “Embrace the target.” In the wake of the Cubs’ surprise 2015 playoff success, Maddon’s take on King’s quote echoed from day one of spring training, emphasizing to players that they were in position to achieve greatness and should not shy from the challenge but run toward it.

Hockey is expensive. Do you have any budgeting tips
?

All youth sports require some financial investment, and costs to participate in hockey can be substantially reduced with planning and common sense. Additionally, both USA Hockey and many local associations offer a number of options to help make hockey a game everyone can play and enjoy. Above all, don’t buy into the myth that only wealthy families can excel in hockey. Many of the game’s greatest players came from modest financial backgrounds.

Click here for specific budgeting tips on pages 8 and 9 of USA Hockey’s Parent Handbook.
