Old Town Neighbor Recognized for Conservation Efforts

The West Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District ended its 2015-16 fiscal year with a bang! Close to 70 partners and supporters celebrated the District’s success and honored past and future leaders at a lunch, Saturday, October 29, at Montgomery Park in NW Portland. One of our Old Town neighbors received the Green Award for their work on the Districts new publication.

Greenworks, LLC, a Portland Old Town landscape architecture and urban design firm provided countless hours to ensure that the District publication, The Meadowscaping Handbook, was beautifully designed and formatted. Two highlights of the publication were the illustrated plant list and 3-D planting templates. Greenworks staff, specifically graphic designer Jennifer D’Avanzo and owner Mike Faha, went above and beyond their original commitment to complete the project. Read more

Thank you for your dedication to conservation!

Sarah Stevenson at Innovative Housing

Tell us about yourself and your business. What makes it unique?
I’m always proud to say I grew up in Portland. I love this City and feel really lucky to be able to work and raise my family here. I am the Executive Director of Innovative Housing, a nonprofit developer of affordable housing. That means we build or acquire housing, own and operate it, and we provide resident services at most of our properties to help our residents maintain their housing stability and access opportunities to improve their quality of life. IHI has housing all over the Portland metro area, from Troutdale to Washington County. We also own property outside of Portland. With the housing crisis in Portland, our work is more important than ever - fortunately, the voters in Portland approved a general bond measure this fall that will provide additional resources to address our City’s affordable housing shortages.

What do you like about being in Chinatown?
Chinatown is a vibrant, interesting part of Portland with a fascinating history and a great mix of people, businesses, and activities...

What else do you like to do in the neighborhood, besides work?
I eat and shop. I enjoy the Chinese Garden and the Saturday Market. I love a big bowl of soup from Good Taste...

How does your business contribute to the neighborhood?
We have completed historic rehabs on four really amazing buildings...

No time to check everyone off your “nice” list? No problem! ‘Tis the season for the Festival of the Last Minute! And as with any welcome holiday tradition, Portland Saturday Market returns with its one-stop event for all those who’ve delayed starting their shopping — and those who simply don’t want to stop.

In addition to the shopping extravaganza, daily holiday festivities are sure to add to the experience. Stop by Santa’s booth, get cozy at several warming stations, and enjoy the sights of seasonal decorations and the sounds of roving carolers. Holiday treats are provided, as is SmartPark Garage validation (2 hours) or a free TriMet ticket for purchases of $25 or more. What’s more, special events will offer shoppers niche options such as Holiday Spirits Fest 2016, set for December 17 & 18 from 11-4:30  (21+ valid ID) — a weekend to showcase the craft wares of local distillers, just in time for your own soiree.
