Information wrap up for 2016.

This end of year newsletter aims to inform you about changes in the food industry late 2016 and going forward into the New Year. We will continue to keep you informed in 2017 with our summary of important updates every 2 months or as important updates are required. Also check out our website news blog for progressive updates and useful resources.

  • FSANZ updated its essential reference document Safe Food Australia ( Version 3, November 2016)  This document provides guidance to the three food safety standards in Chapter 3 of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (the Code). Businesses can use the guidance information to help them to comply with the food safety standards.

    There are new and useful sections in this resource such as
    -Appendix 2: The use of time as a control for potentially hazardous food
    -Appendix 3: Limits for food processes ( quick quide to limits)
    -Appendix 4: Foods requiring special care eg raw and rare meat menu items, sushi, rockmelons,raw egg products
    -Appendix 5: Cooling of cook meat products
    -Appendix 8 Templates- eg food receipt, cooling, temperature control, cleaning & sanitising.
    -Appendix 10: Home-based food businesses
    The FSANZ website also launched a "Food Safety Hub" as a central resource information page
  • FSANZ released a new resource The Compendium of Microbiological Criteria for Food (October 2016).
    This compendium brings together information on pathogens and indicator organisms significant to food safety; microbiological guideline criteria for ready-to-eat foods, and process hygiene criteria that have been established for specific food commodities.

  • The NSW Food Authority has updated its Allergen Management Resource for food service and food retail. The new resources include a revised version of the booklet Be Prepared. Be Allergy Aware , a A2 poster of the 9 nine common allergens, and a new allergy aware checklist.
    Food Service retailers are advised to manage allergens by 
    1. Know ingredients in menu items

    2. Avoid cross contamination
    3. Listen and collect accurate allergen information from customers
    4. Educate all staff members.

  • The NSW Food Authority updated its information and requirements for safe use of raw egg products.
    The NSW Food Authority updated the guideline Food Safety Guidelines for the Preparation of Raw Egg Products (September 2016) to assist businesses to undertake practices that will ensure that they comply with requirements when making products known to cause salmonellosis, such as suaces, dressings and creams, desserts and drinks such as smoothies using raw egg.
  • NSW Food Authority  has launched a Food Labelling Hub, with information on food labelling requirements, to inform the food industry and consumers. Check out the NSW Food Authority interactive Food Labelling Hub here
     
BSI HACCP Certification changes
BSI- a global certification body has announced changes to its HACCP & GMP Certification Criteria effective from 1 January 2017. There will be two levels of certification ‘Essential’ and ‘Excellence’ which is based on modules within the BSI HACCP standard. 
Organizations audited and certified by BSI may choose  to demonstrate best practice and  include the “Excellence” criteria in their certification assessment. Contact BSI for further details of the two tiered HACCP and GMP certification.


Container Deposit Scheme
NSW parliament passed the legislation required for the NSW container deposit scheme. The Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Amendment (Container Deposit Scheme) Act 2016 was passed by on the 19th October. Western Australia announced that it will introduce a similar container deposit scheme in 2018. Queensland has previously announced they intend to have a container deposit scheme operating mid 2018, with ACT still discussing implementing a similar scheme. There are calls for a coordinated introduction of the scheme across multi states and territories. Correct Food Systems will keep you updated.

Training- position your business for a successful new year.....
Correct Training Systems has announced and published its calendar of scheduled public training workshops for 2017. Please refer to our calendar on our website and information about the courses we regularly conduct. 
More than half the training we deliver is non accredited tailor designed courses, conducted on site for our client's businesses.
Correct Training Systems has been busy working with a number of food service and retail clients to conduct Food Safety Supervisor Refresher Training over the past few months.
Several of our clients have also reported their satisfaction with the business specific Induction resource we have developed in various formats, documenting all new employees receive the information and are skilled up ready to commence work, using safe work procedures.
All businesses with product recall or product liability insurance should check with their insurance company if they can access preincident funding for risk management strategies such as training programs offered by Correct Food Systems

  •  A California university student has died in her sleep after inhaling chewing gum into her lungs.
  •  A five year old girl in Florida, USA has been killed while riding in the family boat by a leaping sturgeon which struck her. The fish jumped into the boat, also injuring her brother and mother.
  • The Dog’s Page had reported several times about families all dying after going into septic tanks to recover one member, but now a 21st Century variation. A woman in Xinxiang, China dropped her mobile phone into a cesspit. The woman husband, his parents and two neighbours climbed in one after another after suffering the effects in the gas build up inside.The husband and his mother died from the effect of the gas build up.
  • A 22 year old man from Sydney’s Northern suburbs found a 2m diamond python – curled up inside his breakfast cereal box
