Headlines this week
  • A new study done this week shows that Android users are more than twice as likely to uninstall apps and games than iOS users. According to the study, 43% of games and 21% of app downloads eventually get uninstalled on Android. That's compared to 13% and 9% respectively. This can be attributed to Android users trying more things or being more particular about what they keep or discard. Either way, it's interesting.
  • WhatsApp has reportedly stopped collecting user data in Europe. They were pressured by European regulatory officials to do so. For those who are out of the loop, WhatsApp announced a few months ago that they would start sharing user data with Facebook. This predictably has led to widespread criticism. We believe this is just a temporary halt and data sharing between the apps will happen again sooner or later.
  • The recently launched Amazon Music Unlimited released a new family plan this last week. You can now include up to six total users for $14.99 per month. This goes along with the individual plan that costs $7.99. The new price brings it in line with competitors such as Apple Music, Spotify, and Google Play Music. Each account is also individually managed by its owner. It's a decent deal overall.
  • The developers of Critical Ops announced this week that their app has been downloaded ten million times and boasts 300,000 active daily users. For those who don't know, Critical Ops is a first person shooter that's been in a perpetual beta since its release. Even so, it's a solid game with decent graphics and mechanics. It's a free download in the Play Store if you want to try it out. It's a worthy competitor to more popular shooters like Modern Combat 5.
  • UC Browser developers announced this week that their platform now has 100 million active users in India. That's a fairly impressive stat that only a few apps or games out there can even boast. The company is predictably happy about these numbers. They have even boasted that they're as powerful as Facebook and Google in some areas. The browser is available worldwide if you wanted to try it out for yourself.
  • Taiwan is currently trying to have Uber banned from every app store in its country. Here's what happened. In Taiwan, transportation services pay a different set of taxes from technology platforms. Uber classified itself as a technology platform while the Taiwanese government is well aware that it's essentially a transportation service. We'll have to see how this turns out in the long run, but it's not the first time Uber has been in hot water.
  • Facebook and Google are making some moves to help prevent the circulation of fake news. Facebook will simply stop allowing those stories to trend on its site while Google removes their AdSense money. We don't know what this will mean for the satire community, but it's actually kind of sad that we have the culmination of human knowledge at our fingertips via the Internet and this is still somehow a problem.

App Updates
Additional app releases, announcements, and deals
  • Hill Climb Racing 2 now has an official launch date of November 28th. The first iteration was a massive success across both iOS and Android. From what we've been told, Hill Climb Racing 2 will use more or less the same basic mechanics. It'll feature overhauled graphics, more customization options, and asynchronous online multiplayer support. It'll be a freemium game, though, so be prepared for that.
  • Enpass, the popular password manager, is now officially available for Chromebooks. The update came earlier this week and you'll just need to download the app using Google Play on your Chromebook for it to work. This is good news, because Enpass is pretty good.
  • Twitter has released an official application for Android TV. The idea is to allow you to surf your tweets, look at stuff, and do what you do on Twitter from the comfort of your couch. You can download it right now by searching for it on your Android TV device.
  • A new game called Retro Winter Sports 1986 is coming to Android and iOS sometime in early December. It'll be a retro style game that lets you play various winter sports. It could be good, but we'll know more when it's released next month.
  • Word around the digital grapevine is that Telltale's upcoming 2017 Marvel game will be based around Guardians of the Galaxy. The information comes from a supposed leak originally covered by ComicBookMovie.com. Along with that, the leak also allegedly lists The Walking Dead Season 3 as a game that's happening. We hope all of these leaks are true because that would be awesome.
  • The developers of Textra announced this week that RCS support was coming to Textra early next year.
