10:00am, Irene Kim, "Introducion to Topological Analysis"
Some basic ideas and concepts in the topological data analysis will be introduced.
10:30am, Ken Wang, "Want less constraints?" Use empirical likelihood method!"
Empirical Likelihood is a useful method that enjoys the reliability of nonparametric methods and effectiveness of likelihood based methods. The talk will be about some potential areas where empirical likelihood can be applied.
11:00am, Jamshid Namdari, "Variable Selection in Ultra-high Dimensions"
An overview of recent advances in ultra-high dimensional variable selection with application to microarray data will be presented.
11:30am, Dmitriy Izyumin, "The Bootstrap - Basics and Applications"
A brief overview of the bootstrap methodology and a few of its applications.

About: Come learn about applying to graduate programs in Statistics!  Professor Wolfgang Polonik will speak about the applications process, how to prepare yourself, how to get good letters of recommendation, and more!  You will also hear more about the application process specifically at UC Davis from our Master's Program Coordinator Kate Tape.  There will also be a panel of current statistics graduate students (MS and PhD) that will speak about their personal experiences.  Come with questions!
