From Ellie's Friends:

Create New Holiday Memories by Painting Paws 4 A Cause!

When I think about the holidays, I am reminded of just how grateful I am... for my fur family (a dog and two cats at present), my two-legged family and friends, and for YOU, the loving, generous people who help us to help sick pets get the healthcare they need to stay with their families.

At this time of year, I often reflect upon memories of time spent with family. My mind goes to things like having a special meal, decorating the tree, or "torturing" my furry ones as I try to pose them in Santa hats for a picture.

What better way for this month's newsletter to be a part of the celebration than by meeting a family who, thanks to you (our supporters) and our amazing partner vets, is able to keep creating family memories with the dog they love?

For those who will be traveling to connect with family, we offer some things to consider when your four-leggers are going along.

Upcoming Event: Painting Holiday Ornaments

We're excited to announce our event, PAINTING HOLIDAY ORNAMENTS. Bring your four-legged family to create a one-of-a-kind ceramic ornament featuring your four-legged friend’s paw. Download an event flyer and post on social media, share at public locations & bring your friends! Sunday, December 4, 1-4pm, at Pet People in Centerville. For only $10 you & your pet can create a lasting treasure, while helping sick animals right here in our community to get needed treatment and stay with their people!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for going on this journey with us.  –Juli

P.S. If you’ve noticed a change back to our old format with this edition, we’re doing a trial to see if it gets through to more of you. Several of our readers have complained that the last couple of issues didn’t make it to their inbox.

Love Stories:  Families We Are Helping

Thanks to Ellie's Rainy Day Fund, Mongo got tested and put on anti-seizure medication. He's been seizure-free ever since!

Mongo is a ten year old boxer. I got him at the pound on the day he was scheduled to be euthanized. He had been a "bait dog" for a fighting ring so he was very untrusting of other dogs and people. But that day he picked me. He is my best friend. Knowing that he counts on me & that he's there for me keeps me alive.

I suffer from manic depression and I'm on disability. That means I have a fixed income. So when Mongo started having seizures, I didn't know what I was going to do. My girlfriend and I sometimes go without food so our dogs can get fed. How was I going to afford taking my boy to get help?

You know, he tries to look tough on the outside but when we're not looking, he sneaks in to cuddle. First he lays his head on my lap. Then he slowly works more and more of his 90 pound body on as well. He always seems to knows when you're talking about him too. I think he's asleep, but if I say his name, he lifts one eyebrow. He reminds me through his actions that he's always there.

When Mongo started having seizures I was frantic to get him help. I reached out to everywhere I could, but everyone wanted payment up front. Thanks to Ellie's Rainy Day Fund, Mongo got tested and put on anti-seizure medication. He's been seizure-free ever since.

"Thank you so much for your help. You are truly an angel and the program is a blessing for any fur babies in our community who need help." -Mongo's Dad

Tips for Traveling with Your Pet:

With the holiday season upon us, many of us will be traveling with our four-legged family members. And just like we all have special needs and considerations when we travel, the same is true for the dogs and cats in our lives. To make the travel as stress-free as possible, keep in mind these tips:

  • Ensure your pet is up-to-date on vaccines.
  • Pack all of your pet's essentials: food, water (and bottle some local water if your pet has a more sensitive stomach), any medications, kitty litter, and a favorite toy, blanket, or other comfort item that smells of home,
  • Have a crate for your pet to travel in, this is important for your pet's safety and your own, especially in the car,
  • Make sure that your pet has identification tags on his/her collar, especially if your pet isn't microchipped,
  • Stop frequently for potty breaks, and,
  • Do not leave your pet alone in the car. (Thank goodness for drive-thrus on long treks.)

If your four-legged family member isn't used to traveling in the car, or doesn't do it frequently, it's a good idea to have a few short car rides leading up to the big travel event so he/she will be more accustomed to the experience. Of course, make sure the car is kept at a comfortable and well-ventilated temperature for everyone's sake!

If you are traveling by air, check with each individual airline regarding requirements for traveling with pets well in advance to make sure you comply with the rules and have everything you need. Most airlines even offer the option for in-cabin travel, but only for one pet per cabin.

Following these tips should ensure as pleasant as possible trip for two legged and four legged family members alike!

In the Miami Valley:

We love a good costume party!

We loved meeting so many of you and your dogs at the Bigger Road Veterinary Clinic's Halloween Party! Folks who donated to Ellie's Rainy Day Fund made tug toys as a special thank you. Ellie loves to lay her head on hers when she's done playing.

Thank you, Bigger Road for inviting us to the party. Thank you to all of you who stopped by to say hi.

Just a Reminder:

Bigger Road is doing a fundraiser through January 15, 2017 to benefit ERDF, Humane Society, and SICSA. Stop by either office to contribute.
