Special note:  the intention of this service is to offer a more personal relationship with the Divine as you celebrate and observe Shabbat via chanting, meditative and contemplative exercises.  While Torah is read, it is done so Renewal-style; there are only three aliyot, each accompanied by a special kavannah. Any davener who feels called by a kavannah may come up for one or more aliyot.  A haftarah reading is NOT included, and the entire service typically concludes by 12:00 p.m.  For more information, contact
Carrie Shepard or Hallie Morrow by clicking their names.

A Shabbat of Stories, with special guest Sam Tick-Raker,
8:00 p.m., Sanctuary

What's your story?  Sam Tick-Raker is a UC Davis sophomore working on a project to interview local senior citizens and record their stories for a radio or podcast program.  By hearing and preserving their personal history with the synagogue, powerful experiences, pieces of advice and other interesting facets of their lives, Sam's aim is to ensure that our community members' legacies are carried forward through the power of their voices.  Come to services and share in Sam's stories passed down from his own grandparents in San Francisco, and learn more about his project and how to get involved.

Discussion Group for Interfaith Couples,
with Rabbi Seth Castleman and Rev. Elizabeth Griswold

4:00 - 5:30 p.m., Location in Davis - to be announced

Individuals and couples of all faiths, as well as of no faith tradition, are welcome to join in sharing experiences with others, and cultivating acceptance and deepening appreciation for their relationships and families.  The opportunity for practical holiday season guidance also will be available.  Spouses or partners of different religions or cultures, those who have converted to another religion, parents raising children in a tradition different from the one in which they were brought up, grandparents of grandchildren being raised in another faith...this discussion group is for you!

Rabbi Seth and Rev. Elizabeth believe that they may be the only married Rabbi/Christian minister couple in the world.  The Davis couple spends their time in congregational and spiritual leadership, social justice work and family life with their daughter, Lilah.

Registration will close after this Sunday for the three remaining Sunday afternoons, concluding in mid-December.  The fee is $180 per couple; sliding scale available.  For more information and registration, see

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS/DEADLINES
THIS TUESDAY, November 22, 2016

Davis Interfaith
Thanksgiving Service

7:00 p.m., Davis Community Church, 412 C Street, Davis

Share in the season as Bet Haverim joins more than a half-dozen Davis congregations representing Jewish, Christian and Muslim faith traditions in an Interfaith Thanksgiving celebration.  Attendance is open to community members of all ages and all faith backgrounds. Babysitting will be provided onsite for the very youngest attendees.

Rabbi Greg, Rabbi Seth Castleman and other local clergy, as well as Davis Mayor Robb Davis, will offer wisdom, prayers, readings and songs focused upon themes of gratitude, community service and unity in a fractured world.  An interfaith choir, candle lighting and opportunities for children and teens to participate in the service, will add to the expression of the themes.

All in attendance are invited to contribute to and enjoy a pie potluck in the church’s Fireside Room following the service.  Pies and other desserts specific to faith or cultural traditions can be dropped off in the Fireside kitchen prior to the service.

Additionally, worshipers are encouraged to each bring a can of food to donate to the Short Term Emergency Aid Committee (STEAC), feeding low income members of the community.  STEAC also will be the focus of the communal collection during the service.

For more information about the return of this Davis Thanksgiving tradition, please click
here, contact Rabbi Seth by clicking his name or call Davis Community Church at 530-753-2894.

CBH Office and Communications News

  • THIS TUESDAY, November 22, the office will be closed until 5:00 p.m. for the staff semi-annual clean-up day.  However, the office will be open 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., per the usual Tuesday extended hours schedule.  Please contact Executive Director MK Menard with any questions by clicking her name, or phoning 530-758-0842.
  • NEW - The office will close at 3:00 p.m. THIS WEDNESDAY, November 23 and remain closed on Thursday, November 24 and Friday, November 25, in observance of Thanksgiving.
  • The e-tone newsletter that normally would publish on Thanksgiving Day instead will publish one-day early, on THIS WEDNESDAY, November 23.  The submission deadline will remain as the Monday prior to publication.  Questions should be directed to Communications Specialist Joy Cohan by clicking her name, or phoning 530-383-1814.
  • NEW - the CBH list for Sign-Up Genius invitations has been refreshed for 2016-2017. In order to make sure that no new partners are missed, it means that some partners who previously asked to be removed from the list may have been inadvertently re-added.  Please also keep in mind that this list is multi-purpose; if you ask to be removed from Torah reading notifications, you may still receive oneg hosting, High Holy Days ushering or other invitations, or vice versa.  At this time, it is not possible to refresh individual category lists, only the main list.  Please be patient with this process, as it's the best way to ensure that CBH is an inclusive as possible with our outreach in these categories.  Please simply reply to the sender to be removed from the list for that category of sign-up for the remainder of the 2016-2017 year.  Thank you for your understanding!  Any questions should be sent to Communications Specialist Joy Cohan at communications@bethaverim.org.

Make a Legacy Commitment This Fall or Winter and help CBH to Earn a $2,500 Grant

This Fall, one CBH legacy donor, or pair of donors, will be profiled each week.  Michael Bobell talks this week about his family's 20 year connection with CBH, and his desire to continue the work of those who came before him.  Currently, Michael serves on the CBH Board of Directors as Treasurer, and also coordinates the Life and Legacy campaign at Bet Haverim.  His resume of volunteer activities at CBH over the years, including the annual Mishloach Manot/Purim Baskets fundraiser, earned him Distinguished Volunteer recognition in 2015.

“Bet Haverim is my Jewish home in Davis.  From the moment I walked through the doors in 1996, my family and I always felt welcomed.  My children developed their Jewish character here, and my wife and I have made many lifelong friends with whom we share our joys and sorrows.  Just as the work of many created the CBH I found when I arrived, it is my honor to contribute to a vibrant Jewish community here for generations to come.”

See a full list of the more than 50 CBH Legacy Donors by clicking here.  To create your Jewish legacy, contact Michael Bobell, CBH Life and Legacy Coordinator, by clicking his name, or by phoning 530-400-7031.  The commitment deadline to assist with CBH's incentive grant eligibility is Tuesday, February 28, 2017.

Yolo Food Bank Refrigerated Truck To Debut On Thanksgiving Day in Woodland
7:00 - 10:00 a.m., Heritage Plaza, Main and Second Streets, Downtown Woodland

Last Winter, CBH Partners Heidi Smith and Renee Dryfoos led an effort that ultimately raised more than $115,000 to purchase for the Yolo Food Bank a refrigerated food truck, pallet jack and three years of maintenance and operations for the vehicle.

We can all be thankful that the truck that so many in our community came together to purchase at last is on the road picking up perishable goods several times each month from 19 sites in Yolo County, and delivering them to facilities that can distribute to food insecure individuals and families throughout the area.   Its official debut will unveil the decorating of the truck to reflect its "Community Sponsored" theme, with the names of every donor who participated listed on the truck.

The Heritage Plaza display of the truck will coincide with the Food Bank's annual Running of the Turkeys 5k Run/Walk event.  To learn more about taking part in this event, please click
here. The plaza is adjacent to the Woodland Opera House.  At a later date, the truck is expected to be on display in Davis, as well.

Questions about the truck, or the "Farm to Every Fork" campaign that made the purchase possible, may be directed to
Linda Zablotny-Hurst, Yolo Food Bank Director of Development, by clicking her name, or by calling 530-668-0690.
RELIGIOUS SCHOOL,
YOUNG FAMILIES AND TEENS
Haverim K'tanim "Little Friends":  New Name For Growing CBH Young Families Program!
Shabbat Safari, Holiday Celebrations and More
All Under One "Tent"

Just as children grow and mature, so must our CBH programs for the very youngest partners in our community.  To reflect that commitment, our more formalized young families' events series now is titled Haverim K'tanim, Hebrew for "little friends."  The focus is on families with children under age six.

Haverim K'tanim is envisioned as a tent, within which activities such as Shabbat Safari and holiday gatherings are sheltered and nurtured. In addition, Haverim K'tanim is intended to provide a circle from which families and children may begin to connect for more informal play dates and social opportunities of their own, building long-term relationships to shape their Jewish futures together.

To start or continue your children's Haverim K'tanim adventures, please see
this schedule of events for 2016-2017.  Watch the e-tone, website and the Haverim K'tanim Facebook Group for additional announcements.  Haverim K'tanim organizer Shayndel Adler-Eldridge and CBH Partner Kristi Link-Crosier also can be contacted by clicking their names, or call 530-758-0842.

A Taste of Yiddish Study Group
10:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., Library

Do you have childhood memories of hearing Yiddish?  Are you curious about Yiddish in Jewish culture?  This group of approximately 10 welcomes new members, and functions in a "book group" format, sharing copies of stories, songs and jokes in Yiddish, that are then translated and discussed in English.

It is ideal for participants to know the Hebrew alefbet before attending, however, help is available for those needing assistance.  This is NOT a drop-in group; regular attendance on the second and fourth weeks of the month is necessary in order to build skills from one meeting to the next.  Please contact Zipi Mor at

Heart and Spirit Chant Circle
7:00 - 8:45 p.m., Sanctuary

Are you curious to try chanting?  Or, have you long felt that chant helps you to deepen your spiritual experience?

If you answered yes above, please join CBH partners Hallie Morrow and Carrie Shepard as they share chants written by Rabbi Shefa Gold. These chants offer a unique way to access our spiritual selves through short texts from the Tanach paired with powerful melodies.  Participants do not need a musical background, just an openness to experience the power of chant.

The Heart and Spirit Chant Circle meets on the fourth Monday of each month.  No pre-registration required.  For more information, contact
Carrie or Hallie by clicking their names. Also, to learn more about ongoing Heart and Spirit Chant Circle programs at CBH, including the monthly Contemplative Shabbat Service, please see this flyer.

Israel Peace Alternatives Presents:  "Gett:  The Trial of Vivian Amsalem" Film Screening and Discussion with May Pundak of the New Israel Fund
2:00 - 5:00 p.m., Social Hall

In Israel, rites of passage—including conversion, marriage, and divorce—are the sole domain of the Orthodox Rabbinate. To divorce, part of that process involves a gett (the document that releases a wife from marriage).  In order to obtain a gett and finalize a divorce, some Jewish women have been compelled to give up parental rights or pay large sums of money.

Join IPA for the only Sacramento-area screening of this celebrated film, which tells the story of one woman’s pursuit of a gett, followed by a presentation and conversation with the New Israel Fund’s May Pundak, an Israeli civil rights attorney and activist.

Pundak will offer insights into the state of marriage and divorce in Israel, as well as a new campaign by NIF’s New Generations (young adult group) calling on Israel to enact legislation guaranteeing marriage equality in Israel.

To learn
about the screening at CBH, the film and related topics, please click here.   CBH Partner Sarah Pattison also can assist by clicking her name, or phoning 530-220-5042.  The screening is free of charge and open to the public.
