Welcome to my November newsletter!

I love this time of year; no excuse needed to sit indoors, wrapped up cosy and warm stitching away!  It's been a busy time of year for us; the shop is as busy as ever sending out your hand embroidery goodies all over the world (as well as all of our UK customers, this month we've sent goodies to Hong Kong, USA, South Korea, Italy, Germany, Greece, France and Canada!). I spent a few days down at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London teaching medieval embroidery (more on this below); if you missed the chance to come on this, I'm running it again at the Heritage Skills Centre in the beautiful cathedral city of Lincoln so join me there if you can. Next year's class programme has also been finalised and information and links to booking for all classes is now up on the website. If you aren't able to join me in person, there are still a few last places available on our distance learning class 'Love, Sin and Morality' (see image below) and of course there is our extensive free YouTube video library of stitches, techniques and demonstrations, so plenty of ways to get stitching!

The Victoria and Albert Museum
Opus Anglicanum - Masterpieces of Medieval embroidery
Exhibition and workshop

This month I spent a fabulous few days down at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London teaching the the art of Opus Anglicanum Embroidery to coincide with their fabulous exhibition (on until 5th February 2017). We had two packed out classes and a rather spectaular classroom with instruments hanging over our heads on the first day (see below, centre)! We looked in detail at split stitch shaded faces and hair and then in the afternoon tackled the mysterious underside couching! I demonstrated in thick chunky wool on a large weave fabric to clearly explain the main principles of underside couching then we moved to embroidery cotton then finally on to the gold. It was great to see everyone grasp the fundamentals of this seemingly simple (but not really!) technique. If you want to have a go, check out my video on underside couching here:

I am running this class again plus two new classes on medieval embroidery at Lincoln Castle Heritage Skills Centre; for more information and to book on these visit the classes page here.

The exhibition, 'Opus Anglicanum: Masterpieces of English Medieval Embroidery' is on until Sunday 5th February and is a must if you love hand embroidery!
This is a once in a life time chance to see some of these pieces, and certainly to see this many all in one place. If you can't get to the exhibition, then there is a very wonderful catalogue to go with it available from their shop!

New videos
We have some new sets of videos available to view on the website/Youtube channel (don't forget to subscribe to get information on newly added videos):

Blackwork embroidery:

Learn the fundamentals of this historical counted technique, then follow the tutorials learning how to start and finish your threads, how to count the patterns before having a go at some of them yourself.

Ribbon work embroidery:
This is a very attractive technique and isn't as hard as it may look! Again I introduce you to this technique and the materials, show you how to secure the ribbons then guide you through some of the most popular ribbon work stitches to make a lovely sampler of your own if you wish.

A project pack with all of the materials you need to make this sampler is availble from the shop here:
More videos on the way!
If you enjoy these videos, make sure you tell your stitching friends!
