DECEMBER 2016 / JANUARY 2017

Built last year through the generosity of an alumni donor, the Vocations Wall (above) contains the pictures of Bishop Kelley alumni who are priests, religious, deacons, and seminarians. It's a reminder to all in the community to strive to know God's will and have the courage to follow.

Dear Bishop Kelley Community,

Benchmarking is a term that those of you in the business world probably hear often. Google tells me that it means "to evaluate or check something by comparison to a standard." In the education world, benchmarking is frequently used with regard to standardized test scores. In October, I shared that our ACT scores are at an all-time high and that we had 10 National Merit Semi-Finalists, more than any private school in Oklahoma. While these benchmarks are not everything, they are a good measure of our academic program. It's good and getting better every year thanks to the hard work of our teachers and students.

Here's another stat: We have nine Bishop Kelley alumni in seminary right now. They are Brother Andy Kmetz '02, Daniel Bryan '04, Vince Fernandez '10, Matthew Lauderdale '10, David Carvajal '11, Jon Fincher '11, Adam Pittman '15, Tyler Cassidy '15 and Cameron Victor '16. Brother Andy is with the Institute of the Incarnate Word in Washington, DC and the other eight are with the Diocese of Tulsa. Statistically, Bishop Kelley has eight times as many seminarians as the average Catholic high school in the United States. Historically as a school, we've had six alumni ordained to the priesthood in our entire 57-year history. That's a benchmark that should have a major, positive impact on the Diocese of Tulsa for many years to come.

This number is not the only statistic that matters when it comes to showing that Bishop Kelley provides a strong spiritual foundation. It is, however, a good benchmark of where we stand vis-a-vis other Catholic high schools in the United States in promoting Vocations. These seminarians are in addition to alumnae in women's religious communities. These alumnae are Sr. Servant of the Cross Kmetz (Angela) '01 with the Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matara and Andrea Hassink '06 with the Little Sisters of the Poor. It's also worth noting that the Diocese of Tulsa, with a total of 25, has more seminarians than at any time in our 43-year history.

As this Advent season gets underway, it's my prayer that the vocations of these young alumni will challenge us all to a deeper devotion to Christ as we await His return in glory. A blessed Advent to you all!

In Christ,

Rev. Brian O'Brien
President

GO for Catholic Schools is great for end-of-year giving

GO for Catholic Schools directly benefits Bishop Kelley High School with funding for current students with financial need, and indirectly, by creating a stronger pool of students for BK in the future.

Individual donors may designate a preference for 75% of the money contributed to go towards scholarships at particular Catholic schools in the Diocese of Tulsa, including Bishop Kelley. The remaining 25% will go to fund scholarships at Catholic schools throughout the Diocese based on where the financial need is greatest, so BK may receive a share of those funds.

That tax credit, especially when combined with the charitable contribution deduction, dramatically lowers the net cost of a contribution to GO. Please consider Go for Catholic Schools in your end-of-year giving. To learn more about GO, click here or call Director of Advancement Doug Thomas at 918-609-7115

Marcus Lyons

Marcus Lyons is team captain of Boys Cross Country, a member of National Honor Society, a Brother Bernardine Scholar and Senior Class board secretary. He attended the Oklahoma State Convention for Student Government and is active in BK Chorus. He's enjoyed his experience in the high school musicials such as Singin' in the Rain and Fiddler on the Roof. He looks forward to the Beauty and Beast next spring.

Marcus is one three BK students this year selected to the Tulsa Mayor’s Youth Council, which meets once per month. The council allows youth to have a voice in the city's political future and learn about local government.

“I always tell people you can pick up whatever you want to do whenever you want." Marcus said. "A lot of the best things in the life are the spontaneous things. I think Bishop Kelley gives you the opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and do that and do something greater.”

Marcus is taking AP Calculus, AP Physics I and II and AP English Language. He is interested in pursuing a college degree at Geogia Tech, Purdue, OU or Texas A&M. Being involved in sports, politics and the arts are what makes Marcus who he is, which is part of a fulfilling, expansive environment.

“BK makes it easy for a student to be so well-rounded," he said, "and explore every interest that you might have.”

Marcus enjoys Mary Jo Othon's physics class "and while it’s difficult, it has given me a lot of exposure to what I will be doing in my career. My dream is to attend Georgia Tech University and I want to do computer engineering. I am making sure I gain some skills I need before I got to college.” - Marcus Lyons.

She really appreciates the warmer and larger community at BK.  "All of my friends, except for two, I have made at Bishop Kelley because it's such a great community here. But it’s not one thousand people in my grade, but it’s not too small, either. I love BK because of the great community of friends. It was good for me to meet more people and make a difference because this is such a great school.” - Maggie Ertl
