1.Question interview: Sue Thaden - President/CEO - From Now On (Part I)
The Houston Chronicle's Atkins goes deep on the state of HC diversity around college FB. Texas State HC Withers on the continuing challenges for minorities, "Throughout the evolution of college athleticism, the big booster sports have been predominantly driven by influential Caucasian alum throughout the country. It's still that way." Former Stanford/Notre Dame/Washington boss Willingham on reasons for the shortfall, "I want them (those making the hires) to be able to identify shortcomings, if such exist….If you can't give me concrete reasons why I am not good enough, then there's only one conclusion I can go to." Virginia Prez Sullivan: "This is an issue that you find in every type of job. It's not unique to coaching." Vanderbilt Chancellor Zeppos, who has a black AD & HC, "I'm never going to throw one of my other colleagues under the bus. There are avenues of decision making that have not become probably as inclusive as they should be." Former NFL HC Dungy calls the assertion by Texas A&M Prez Young that it may take more time for black student-athletes to develop into top coaches, "ludicrous […] By that argument, you're saying Eddie Robinson couldn't have been as good a coach as Bear Bryant. There have been black coaches out there for years but never got an opportunity." Lots more. (link)
Full throttle speculation in the Longhorn State after Texas' loss last night to Kansas. Here's what Houston AD Yurachek had to say on Friday about the future of his FB HC Herman, "Right now I think Tom is committed and focused to being the head coach at Houston. He’s had great success in that role, which I’m sure will create some interest and potential opportunities for him moving forward. I like our odds of Tom Herman being our head coach for the foreseeable future." Adds that there are probably some within UH leadership who would allow Herman to have a lifetime contract, also spent two hours on Friday with Herman's agent, Athlete First's Armstrong. (link); Texas AD Perrin did not comment after last night's game. 24 of 125 aiming for 1/7/17. The FCS Playoffs selection show will air this morning on ESPNU at 11a EST. Jacksonville State HC Glass expects his Gamecocks to be a one or two seed, believes UT Martin (7-5, 6-2) should also be in the field, "I think if UT Martin doesn’t make it in, it’s disappointing for the OVC. No way this conference ought not get two teams in. They’re a quality football team, better than 10 teams that will make it in the playoffs." First round match-ups start next Saturday. (link)
You've likely already seen or read these comment from Florida FB HC McElwain after his Gators defeated LSU, 16-10, in the match-up reschedule after Hurricane Matthew & to win the SEC East. McElwain: "How about that? These guys came on the road for a home game and won the SEC East. ... They got some guts, they've got some pride, they were called out — and you know, what amazes me is that people call people out when there's actually tragedy happening. Unbelievable to me. ... It was a ballgame — the incident that happened back then, there were lives involved." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Former Wake Forest/South Carolina/East Carolina MBB HC & current Maui Invitational boss Odom: "If you look at other tournaments that compete with us, most bring in four really good teams and two pretty good teams and the two teams that pretty much guarantee others a win or two. I don't do that. I want everyone to know when they sign on to come to Maui that they are going to be facing the seven best teams I can put together." Odom's planning process starts by reaching out to the best available 'Power 5' programs who haven't been to Maui in the last four years, then looks to fill the rest of the field from the likes of the Big East, Mountain West, etc. This year's event tips tomorrow. Prior to last night's kick with Tulsa, UCF FB home attendance averaged 35,934 in the 45,301-seat Bright House Networks Stadium this season, up from 30,064 last year, but down from 2013 & 2014. Some season ticket holders lament that there's not more support for the improved 6-5 (4-3) Knights. From WESH 2, "Athletic Director Danny White says they will be doing things “differently” next year to bring more fans out but would not elaborate." This season's top mark was 43,197 for Maryland back in September. (link)
Nebraska Assoc. AD for Leadership, Student-Athlete Recruitment & Diversity Initiatives Williams will exit Lincoln & his alma mater for a new role as Director of Student-Athlete Engagement & Professional Development at Maryland. Terps AD Anderson: "He is a well-rounded individual with a wealth of knowledge and experiences in academics, athletic administration and as a former professional and student-athlete. Jamie will serve as a role model to our student-athletes, as he was once in their position. His message and leadership will resonate throughout our athletic department and university community." (link)
Oklahoma State FB HC Gundy technically has his team at 9-2 (7-1), but he mentioned having 10 wins multiple times after yesterday's win over TCU & of course, it's the highly controversial last second win by Central Michigan in Stillwater back in September that's the point of debate. Gundy: "I know Kirby had mentioned that the committee feels a certain way about that game. I think Kirby's playing poker and that they see us as a 10-win team. That's just my opinion." Oklahoma boss Stoops agrees, "In my eyes, they only got one loss. You know, if you played by the rules." (link)
West Virginia AD Lyons on HC Holgorsen after the Mountaineers dropped a decision to Oklahoma last night, "He’s built a staff that wants to be around each other and wants to work with each other. I think you can correlate some of the success to people who not only enjoy doing the work but enjoy being around each other and feel they’re a part of something bigger than themselves. They’re part of a team." Holgorsen still won't comment on a new deal in Morgantown after he & Lyons reportedly cut off conversation on the topic back in February. (link)
The three charter buses transporting Texas State FB to its game with New Mexico State yesterday were involved in a multi-vehicle accident, which resulted in six individuals taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries. The incident led to kick off in Las Cruces being delayed for over an hour. NMSU ended up winning the tilt, 50-10. (link)
Yahoo's Forde penned late into the night/early into the morning on 10 takeaways from yesterday's FB action, starting with the potential for an HC overhaul in the state of Texas. Additionally, calls former Florida AD Foley "the happiest man in college athletics on Saturday" for two reasons, plenty on how the new College FB Playoff rankings may shake out on Tuesday night, "The Colorado renaissance is the biggest surprise in college football in 2016," more. (link)
You may want to watch and/or record 60 Minutes on CBS tonight as a quartet of top U.S. Women's Soccer players are set to discuss the state of gender equity in sports. Women's National Team captain & former Rutgers standout Lloyd, "We feel like we’re treated like second-class citizens, because they don’t care about us as much as they do the men […] This is a social movement, I think. This is about gender discrimination. And I don’t think that positive change occurs in the world unless it has to." The segment also includes co-captian Sauerbrunn (Virginia), teammates Press (Stanford) & Brian (Virginia). (link)
Rutgers AD Hobbs continues to receive solid marks from Scarlet Knights fans & media, this time it's a profile from SB Nation's 'On The Banks' outlet with a run down of pictures & other content from a number of Hobbs' outreach efforts to groups on campus. "Possibly the greatest achievement for Pat Hobbs seems to be that he has alienated no one, and more importantly seems to have engaged and connected with everyone." (link); Rutgers Wrestling was defeated by Princeton yesterday in an outdoor match, the 'Battle of the Birthplace,' inside High Point Solutions Stadium that drew the second-largest dual-meet crowd in NCAA history with 16,178 in attendance. (link)
Interesting survey from Sports Illustrated: "How football fans across America feel about the sport's biggest issues." 26.7% said football is more important than religion, 77.5% would allow their children to play the sport (women = 68.3% "yes"), but 94.3% indicate head injuries are a problem, average age kids should be allowed to play tackle = 11, 16.3% say they can envision a time when tackle FB is no longer played, more. (link)
USA Today's Berkowitz with his weekly buffet of FB HCs who earned bonus monies. Colorado State is bowl eligible = $50K for HC Bobo, USF got its ninth win = $10K for HC Taggart, Clemson boss up to $250K in on-field, South Carolina headed to a bowl = $50K for HC Muschamp, Minnesota's fifth Big Ten win = $50K for HC Claeys, Iowa's seventh win = $125K pool to be split by HC Ferentz to non-coaching staff, Memphis HC Novell up to $80K, more. (link)
Remember 55 year-old South Carolina State FB student-athlete Thomas Sr. who was profiled the other day? He got a carry in the Bulldogs 32-0 win over Savannah State & even gained three yards. We can only hope to be half this limber at the young age of 55. (link)
Also noticed: If you're so inclined, here's the interview LSU AD Alleva did at halftime of the Tigers match-up with Florida yesterday, says there's no timeline for an HC hire as he "wants to get it right." (link); ESPN College GameDay is headed to Columbus for next weekend's Ohio State-Michigan match-up & we're in for a five-hour show. (link); 'The Game' between Harvard & Yale was delayed a bit yesterday as some Yale students chose to go au naturel. (link)
