Happy Thanksgiving!

We are thankful for your ongoing support of our mission to collect, preserve, and share the history of St. Louis Park.  In the spirit of the holidays, we have news of our annual Depot lighting ceremony and a handy gift guide below.  Also, we have news of our big fundraiser in April.

2nd Annual Depot Holiday Lighting
Saturday December 3 | 5:30pm
Jorvig Park

Once again we are lighting up the Depot for the winter!  Come join us for hot chocolate, cookies and a brief gathering as we celebrate the holiday season and honor this great asset to the community.

Thomas Friedman
Sunday, April 30 | 7pm
Sabes Jewish Community Center

We are thrilled to announce that Park native Thomas L. Friedman (Pulitzer Prize winning New York Times columnist and Distinguished Alum of St. Louis Park High School) has agreed to highlight the Society’s 2017 Building Fundraiser, scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday, April 30, 2017 at the Theater of the Sabes Jewish Community Center at 4330 Cedar Lake Road.

The Society worked with Tom as he researched his time in The Park for his soon-to-be-released book Thank You for Being Late, due out before December 1, in which he explores how growing up in the Midwest, the Twin Cities and St. Louis Park shaped his world view. The Society’s fundraiser on April 30 will feature another of St. Louis Park’s globe-trotting journalists (and a SLP High Distinguished Alum herself), Susan Linnee, interviewing Tom, journalist to journalist.

Thank You for Being Late, Thomas L. Friedman

In this latest book by Park alum Tom Friedman, he explores the accelerating pace in which we all live and uses various autobiographical stories including ones centered in St. Louis Park.  This will make great reading in advance of our fundraiser in April!

Ray & Joan, Lisa Napoli
Much is known of Ray Kroc, the founder of McDonald's, but in this book we learn about his wife Joan who gave away his fortune after his death.  Joan's ties to St. Louis Park are less known, but her first husband managed the McDonald's on Lake Street, which also happened to be the second McDonald's in the state.  You can also read up on that McDonald's and see some of the pictures on our website

Minnesota Modern: Architecture and Life at Midcentury, Larry Millett
From the genteel elegance of Christ Lutheran Church in Minneapolis to the lowbrow wonder of Porky's Drive-in in St. Paul, the Twin Cities and other Minnesota communities including St. Louis Park are nothing short of a living museum of midcentury modernism, the new style of architecture that swept through much of America from 1945 to the mid-1960s. Renowned Minnesota architecture critic and historian Larry Millett conducts an eye-opening, spectacularly illustrated tour of this rich and varied landscape.
