Dear Parents and Caregivers

Peter Ackers

This will be the last newsletter of the year as the 2016 academic year comes to a close.

2016 has been another successful year for the College with our students achieving academic, sporting and extra curricular success. Those successes will be recognised at our sports and merit prize giving on 7th December and School prize giving on 8th December. I would love to see lots of parents at both these events.

At this time of year there are plenty of EOTC events with our Year 9 students over in Rarotonga and Mr Towey onto his fourth Duke of Edinburgh tramp. These activities don’t just happen and Mr Towey and Mrs Rudolph especially, have done an enormous amount of preparation work to make these amazing opportunities for our students happen. If you see them please make sure you thank them. Last Thursday Mr Lewis organised a trip to Snow Planet and the students that did not go to snow planet walked from the Whangarei Falls down to the Aquatic centre.  Thanks to Mr Lewis for organising these events.

As mentioned in a previous newsletter, 2017 will see the introduction of positive education to Years 7 – 9 and staff are excited about the introduction of this new initiative. There will also be a slight change to the bell times next year with every day starting with a 10 minute form time and finishing with a 5 minute form time. For Form time only, there will be combined Year 8 & 9, Year 9 & 10 and Year 10 & 11 form classes. Year 7 form classes will be remaining as 2016. These combined form classes will bring the Year levels together and enable us to have smaller form classes which will assist our form teachers in giving pastoral support for the students in their form class. The split form time means students know that each day has the same beginning and the 5 minutes at the end of the day will give form teachers a chance to deliver phones and give final home work instructions. Please note that this change is for form class only and each level will continue to have horizontal core classes for all their subjects.

The Family and Friends  had a very enjoyable social occasion at the Split Bar in Whangarei last week. It was well attended and nice to chat to the many parents that attended. If you want to be involved in the school, I strongly recommend joining the Family and Friends group. They are a great bunch and they have some great events planned for 2017. Please contact the school to find out about the first meeting date of 2017.

Staff Farewells
This year we sadly farewell two members of staff: Mrs Jessica Megerney (English) and Mr Ric Drake (Science). We thank them for their dedicated service to Huanui College and wish them all the best for the future.

In finishing, I would like to thank everybody in the Huanui College Community for their support of the College over the past year and wish everybody a relaxing holiday period and a pleasant Christmas with family and friends.

Family & Friends Parent Evening

Thank you to everyone who attended our Family & Friends parent evening last week, what a great evening and it was wonderful to see so many people come along. The Family and Friends is a welcoming group of parents who organise events and activities that celebrate our school community and we have a lot of fun doing it. Our main goal is not fundraising but to form a close association with our teachers, students & parents and provide a safe and welcoming forum for parents.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support this year; we have had a great turnout at our meetings which are now held bi-monthly. We are keen to welcome new members at any time so feel free to come along to a meeting or contact me if you would like any further information. It’s a small commitment for a very satisfying result.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Family & Friends committee for their commitment and dedication to the group during 2016, I am very grateful to you all.

On behalf of the Family & Friends I would like to wish you all a safe & happy holiday season and encourage you to come along and join us in 2017.

Warmest regards.

7H Food Tech Class

7H Food Tech class. They had the task of baking and building a Christmas gingerbread house. What a great end to a fabulous semester in the kitchen!

Epic Challenge

The Dairy Ain’t Airy Fairy team of Harriette Baxter, Sinead Hallberg, Jordan Carswell and Callum McKay were the winners of the overall EPIC award.  The winners of the two categories DairyNZ Innovation EPIC Award (Dairy aint airy fairy) and the MPI Future focused EPIC Award (Mount Albert Grammar) were in line to win the EPIC award. The students all attended a ceremony in Wellington on 23rd November at the Beehive and were required to present a summary of their project to Nathan Guy, Minister of Primary Industries and other dignitaries. The students represented our school with aplomb and were announced as the winners of the competition.  Over 80 schools from around New Zealand participated in this competition – with about 120 entries.  The creativity and innovation displayed by our students impressed the judges.  The life-skills that they learnt while completing this project – problem-solving, time management and working in a team – will stand them in good stead in the future.

Blue Light

Marnie Reid from Blue Light came to Huanui College last week and our students were able to join in some Blue Light Blast activities. House points were up for grabs on who could float their feather for the longest without the feather landing on the ground. Have you ever tried to eat an Oreo cookie once it's been placed on your eye without using your hands or getting out of the chair you're sitting in? Fact: There are 42 muscles in the human face.
More fun with Blue Light - empowering youth.

Noho marae – 2016 – Takahiwai Marae

After two postponements our noho marae finally went ahead with the Year 7-10 students who take Te Reo Māori heading out to One Tree Point on Thursday and Friday last week.

We were warmly welcomed by Whaea Meryl Carter, her son Mana Epiha and the haukainga of Takahiwai Marae.  Matua Korotangi Kapa-Kingi guided us through the pōwhiri process and we enjoyed having a kai (hakari) to celebrate the joining of our whanau to theirs.

Our marae stay was a really beautiful experience, we all learnt so much about the area, the rivers, the estuary and surroundings.  The students were fortunate to have Ira Seitzer share her knowledge of researching clearwater streams and estuaries and we were able to help the marae by conducting research on the health and sustainability of the area.

We swam at Ruakaka Beach, learnt mau rakau, had early morning runs and swims, ate lot of yummy food, sang many waiata and shared our pepeha at night.  We were guided into the bush by Matua Abe, a local, who shared his knowledge of the Puriri trees and how they are land marks for Ngapuhi and the ancient practices of burying those who have passed.  We were shown his skilled ways of making tokotoko (talking sticks) and were gifted one for our school.  Our beautiful weaver Mandy Sunlight passed on her knowledge and some students created some amazing baskets, kete, bracelets and decorations.

Most of all we experienced the lovely wairua that comes from staying on a marae together.  Kotahitanga (unity), manaakitanga (hospitality, kindness, generosity), mahitahi (working together), tuakana/teina (older supporting younger) and whakamanawanui (being brave and courageous).

Our parents worked like ninjas in the kitchen and in varying supervising roles.  We are so grateful for the support and would like to acknowledge Jacqui Hori-Hoult, Liz Welch, Ena Mahunga, Kirsty Hughes, Vanessa Syers, Kristy Wolf, Josie Edwards,  Donella Phillips, Gary Payinda.  Thanks to Korotangi Kapa-Kingi and Te Morena Peita for helping us with our pōwhiri (welcome) and poroporoaki (handing the marae back over the haukainga and farewell).  Thanks to the Blackley family for supplying our meat for Thursday nights yummy roast dinner.  But mostly I want to acknowledge Meryl, Mana and Ira for taking our school and treating us so beautifully, planning and preparing activities and opening the doors for our students to feel a sense of belonging.  Mana took two days from work from Māori TV and travelled from Auckland to awhi us – we learnt so much!  Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa!
Nā Whaea Cathy.

SPORT

Volley Ball Team

Huanui College girls volleyball team competed recently in a regional school tournament against other local high schools. They finished the day with two wins and 2 losses and showed vast improvement with every game they played.

Cricket

Our Cricket team recently competed in the Armstrong Shield which saw them playing against other local school teams.

On the first day we had a bye, then our afternoon game got rained out before it begun. On the second day we played Whangarei Boys High 1st XI and had a tough game losing 212 - 60. This didn't dampen our enthusiasm as we headed into the second game, playing against Whangarei Boys High 2nd XI. It was a real close game with Huanui losing 141 - 139. Great batting from Will Potter (41 runs), James Martin (38 runs), and Hunter Reid (32 runs), and also great bowling and fielding from everyone. It was anyone's game right down to the finish.
