One Voice Training: Advocacy & Lobbying 101 for Texas Nonprofits

Whether influencing the state budget or advocating for legislative reform, there are many reasons that 501(c)(3) public charities choose to lobby to achieve their policy goals. This comprehensive workshop led by Natalie Ossenfort, Texas Director at Alliance for Justice and the organization's Bolder Advocacy program, will help explain what lobbying is and why it is so important. Federal law allows 501(c)(3) public charities (including houses of worship and public foundations) to lobby within generous limits, and state law similarly permits nonprofit lobbying and advocacy.

When: TOMORROW, November 30th, 2:00pm-4:00pm
Where: LifeWorks East, 835 N. Pleasant Valley Rd. in the Multipurpose Room
Who: This training is geared for One Voice Executive Directors, Board Members, and senior staff. One Voice members are encouraged to send anyone at their organization who would benefit from this training.
Cost: FREE for One Voice members, their staff, and board members. The cost for non-members to attend is $30; email
caity@onevoicecentraltx.org if you are a non-member and would like to register.

Featured Member of the Week

Dr. Kurt Senske, CEO, Upbring
Number of Years as CEO: 19 and a half years
How did you become interested in this work? I began my career working as an attorney and in politics at the state and national levels. While taking time off to complete a Ph.D. at the University of Texas I was approached by Lutheran Social Services of the South (the predecessor organization to Upbring) to serve as its COO. I quickly fell in love with the mission of the organization and haven’t looked back since. The mission of caring for and providing a future to children who are abused or neglected is simply too compelling for me not to want to play a role.

Don't Forget! One Voice Actions to Complete!

Please Complete the Diversity Inventory Survey by December 9th!

90 Responses Received So Far!

One Voice Central Texas Members: The Diversity Task Force has created this Diversity Inventory Survey to gather information for the creation of tools and opportunities for dialogue centered around diversity. Your participation is critical and we value hearing from each of our members.

Purpose of Inventory: Addressing diversity is one of the key components of the One Voice Central Texas Strategic Plan. One part of this plan is to conduct this inventory and create a baseline of opinions and knowledge regarding diversity and the nonprofit sector. Using the results from this information, the Diversity Task Force plans to create tools and opportunities for dialogue so that members can create a systemic shift in how diversity is addressed and discussed.

Who should respond: We are asking that One Voice Central Texas member Executive Directors, their management teams, and staff complete this inventory so that we can create a complete picture of opinions about diversity within the nonprofit sector.

Timeline: The deadline for completion is December 9, 2016.

The survey should take about 10-15 minutes to complete.

Please send out the following email to your staff: "One Voice Central Texas and its 95 nonprofit members, of which our organization is one, are committed to addressing diversity within the nonprofit sector. As part of this process, they are conducting a survey to create a baseline of opinions, attitudes and experiences of individuals within the nonprofit sector related to diversity. The results of this work will help focus and guide One Voice Central Texas as it creates resources, learning opportunities, and discussions related to diversity in our sector. All opinions expressed are strictly confidential, and I will receive only aggregated results for organizations of our size. FYI our organizational budget is XXXX (Please fill in your organizational budget). The link to complete the survey is:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/diversityinventory. Please respond before the December 9th deadline."
