Drawing
There are drawing materials in every classroom at the Little School. The Red Room has chunky crayons. Children make marks on paper. They are often pleased to see the colors that emerge as they apply pressure to crayons. In the Blue Room, there are fat crayons and skinny crayons. The children are still scribbling but some children call the marks writing and others may label their work as fire trucks or dinosaurs. In the Yellow Room, the children are beginning to ‘represent’ or to draw pictures of real things. Often, the first representational drawing will be a self-portrait. Some children, mostly those with older siblings, learn to draw houses, rainbows, flowers and the sun. But children’s mastery of drawing materials is still unsteady. Even the child who can draw a human figure, may more often experiment with lines and circles. At some point during the year, the children in the Purple Room begin to use drawing as a medium for expressing thoughts and feelings. This year, even those who struggle with pencil grip and control were motivated to draw something special for a classmate who is moving far away.

The children made goodbye drawings. Each dictated a note but, in many examples, the drawings themselves showed how much they knew about their classmate and friend, what felt important to them about his move or what they would miss:
