On behalf of the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts, we would like to congratulate the Class of 2016! I know you all have worked hard, and at the end of your academic career, I would like to warmly welcome you and all our new graduates into the world-wide network of the FIU Alumni family. We look forward to supporting and learning from you as you connect and contribute as a member of the FIU Alumni Association. So many of you have contributed to sponsoring our great events and lectures, as well as scholarships that help our students meet their goal to pursue higher education. We were glad to see you all at our CARTA Holiday Reception on Thursday, Dec. 8. So much goes into planning for an exciting year 2017, and you can play a big part! Help us meet our goal of $10,000 to grant 10 scholarships next year. With your entry you will have a chance to win an airfare, a two-night hotel stay, a spa day and more. Danny Pino, '96 | Theatre

From playing Star Wars as a kid with his brothers to starring in critically acclaimed TV series and films, Danny Pino was meant for stardom. Pino, who graduated from FIU with a bachelor’s in theatre in 1996, most recently starred in Robert and Michelle King’s political satire television series “BrainDead” on CBS. Previously, he played Detective Nick Amaro for NBC’s “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” and is best known for his seven seasons as the iconic Detective Scotty Valens on the Warner Brothers series “Cold Case. $10 million gift from Moishe Mana to fund new arts home for FIU
Florida International University’s arts program will have a home in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood starting next year, funded by a donation worth $10 million from developer Moishe Mana. The program will be known as FIU CARTA (College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts) @ Mana Wynwood. To read more, click here.

FIU gifted $831K to launch new incubator for art and design
FIU announced Wednesday that it will team up with a philanthropic organization to create an incubator geared toward monetizing arts- and design-driven ideas. The Ratcliffe Arts + Design Incubator, based at FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus in North Miami, will work to provide tools and support needed to turn art and design students’ ideas into profitable businesses. SCJ professor publish new book on Miami spaces
Dr. Moses Shumow and Dr. Robert E. Gutsche, Jr. in the Department of Journalism + Media have published a new book on Miami spaces. The book also includes a Foreword by Dr. Juliet Pinto, Interim Executive Director of the School of Communication + Journalism. Alumna Apphia Campbell featured in American Theatre Magazine

FIU Theatre alumna Apphia Campbell (BFA, ’06) was profiled in the December 2016 issue of American Theatre Magazine in the recurring “Role Call: People to Watch” feature. Ms. Campbell has been touring Europe, Asia, and the United Kingdom with her one-woman play, Black is the Color of My Voice, inspired by the life and music of Nina Simone. To read more, click here.

Communication faculty member co-authors chapter in communicating interpersonal conflict in close relationships
Lynne M. Webb, Professor in Communication, co-authored an essay entitled, “Conflicts with Heterosexual Partners about Sexual Discrepancies” in Communicating Interpersonal Conflict in Close Relationships: Contexts, Challenges, and Opportunities. The research, conducted with Moon Sook Son and Patricia Amason, examines communication within heterosexual partners on sexual discrepancies from a woman’s standpoint. To read more, click here.

Public relations students partner with the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation
SCJ Instructor Hugo Ottolenghi’s Public Relations courses had the opportunity to partner with the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation for a semester long project. Architecture alumna's Hannukkah menorah calls attention
Architecture alumna, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Katz, '12 designed a sculptural bronze menorah for Hanukkah that is available to buy in the New York Jewish Museum. The menorah is a product of many years of prototyping and exploration into 2D to 3D digital design processes. Katz is passionate about making Jewish ritual objects that are relevant and exciting to her contemporaries. She has worked as an architectural designer, and also in museum and gallery settings in both the U.S. and in Israel. To read more about Katz, click here.
