Greetings from the CTL!

Hello!

Happy spring semester! For those of you who are new to Boise State, welcome! For those of you who have previously taught at Boise State, welcome back! In either case, I hope you find this newsletter to be a valuable resource.

I am sure you, like me, are interested in your students' success this semester. I found this essay from Anne Curzan in The Chronicle of Higher Education helpful in thinking about how to create a positive learning environment for my students, so I thought I would share it with you. She asked her students to create a list of ways that they, and the professor, could promote "good learning"  in the classroom. What came from that process is a list of pretty useful strategies that we can encourage of our students (and ourselves!) as we begin this semester.

As always, feel free to be in touch with me at any time should you have questions about teaching at Boise State.

Happy teaching!

Best,

Adjunct Discussion Series: Strategies for Fair and Effective Grading

The Adjunct Discussion Series provides opportunities for adjunct faculty to meet with each other and talk about teaching. Please join us for our first Adjunct Discussion Series of the semester, which will take place on January 25 from 5:15-6:30 PM in the CTL, ILC 315.This session will include directed discussion about faculty, department and university policies on grading, as well as time to work with various tools that can support fair and effective grading. Participants will come away with resources to help them more clearly articulate their approach to grading and ideas for making this process more transparent to students.

To register for this event, please click this link or visit https://ctl.boisestate.edu/workshop-and-event-calendar/.

Also, prior to the discussion, representatives from Learning Technology Solutions will be available in ILC 315 from 4:45-5:15 to share information about technology you can use to assist with grading, including clickers. To sign up for this informational session, please use this link.

Please note: free parking is available to adjuncts attending these events! Please email ctl@boisestate.edu to get the code.

Online Workshops

Though we hope you can join us here on campus for events like the Adjunct Discussion Series, we also know that many of you are juggling multiple responsibilities - and Computer screen with pencilsome of you are teaching from another state! - which makes it hard to attend face to face workshops. That is why we will be offering five online workshops this spring semester! These workshops are open to all faculty at Boise State, and will cover a variety of topics. Most workshops require 1.5-2 hours of work over the course of a week. For a full list of our online offerings this semester, and to register, please click this link or visit https://ctl.boisestate.edu/online-workshops/

Important Resource: BroncoAlert

BroncoAlert is a phone and text-based system which allows the university to proactively notify students, faculty and staff when an emergency is taking place on or near campus. BroncoAlert will only be used in critical situations, including weather emergencies, with potential to affect health or safety. When the university initiates an emergency message, the BroncoAlert system will send an automated e-mail message to university e-mail accounts. You can also have BroncoAlert messages sent to you via text by signing up for the service in your PeopleSoft account.

For more information about BroncoAlert, please go to https://news.boisestate.edu/bronco-alert/.

Adjunct Spotlight: Danny Ebert

Danny Ebert has taught for Boise State's Department of Biology for the past 11 years, starting the week after he retired from a 32 year career in the Forest Service. He currently teaches Anatomy and Physiology (BIO 227 and 228), lecture and lab, both here on our main campus and at the Gowen Field site. Along with his experience teaching at Boise State, Danny has also taught a variety of classes at other universities, including Arkansas Technical University, Boston University and Virginia Technical University.

When Danny retired from the USDA Forest Service he was serving as the Intermountain Region Partnership Coordinator (Region 4). His previous posts included the Fisheries, Wildlife, Recreation and Heritage Program Manager for the Boise National Forest, where he supervised a large program and staff. He began his Forest Service Career as a fisheries biologist. He is a Certified Fisheries Scientist (American Fisheries Society) and has authored numerous fisheries and wildlife management scientific papers and book chapters.

Danny says he enjoys teaching Anatomy & Physiology because "I believe the medical field needs qualified nurses, doctors and assistants that are qualified care givers. I want medical professionals that have held a real heart in their hand, for instance, and know the anatomy and physiology of the body’s organ systems."

But beyond that, Danny loves the students. "I basically like people, and Boise State students have a high energy level. What is fulfilling for me is to have the chance to write letters of recommendation for my best students when they are applying for professional medical programs and to know I had a small part in their success."
