ESSA e-Newsletter

As Colorado works on drafting the state's plan to implement the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), this periodic e-newsletter will provide updates on major developments, including information about the work of the hub and spoke committees, as well as important actions by the Colorado Department of Education, State Board of Education and U.S. Department of Education.

Feedback requested from spoke groups

Submit feedback on Accountability decision points

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Accountability Spoke Committee/Accountability Work Group requests your feedback by Wednesday, Dec. 14, on key accountability decision points needed for implementing ESSA.

Since September, the group has met five times to research, discuss and brainstorm options for the accountability decision points in the ESSA state plan. Now, the group is looking for wider input before drafting the actual state plan language.

The Accountability Spoke Committee recorded a series of presentations online with a PowerPoint presentation on each decision point and a survey for input. The specific decision points available for comment now are:
  • English learner assessment policy (First year in US)
  • Long-term goals and interim measures
  • English learner progress measure(s)
  • “Other indicator” of school quality or student success
  • Minimum number of students
  • Method for identifying and exiting schools for support and improvement
You may provide input on individual decision points or all of them. You may also forward this to others you think would be interested. We especially need your help in reaching parents.

Once this input is gathered, the Accountability Work Group will review, make any applicable adjustments and then release a draft of the state plan language for input at a later date. To view all decision points, descriptions, presentations, and surveys, please visit our Accountability feedback webpage.

Submit Feedback on the ESSA Standards draft section

The ESSA Standards Spoke Committee also requests your feedback, by Wednesday, Dec. 14, on the Standards section draft. This section addresses the requirement to provide evidence that Colorado has adopted challenging state academic standards, including challenging academic content standards and aligned academic achievement standards; as applicable, alternate academic achievement standards; and English language proficiency standards.

Please note that content for this draft only addresses standards requirements of ESSA and is separate from the state-driven standards review and revision process. Please visit our Colorado Academic Standards Review and Revision website for more on that process.

You can find the ESSA Standards draft survey here.
