The education watchdog released its Annual Report today, lauding the progress made by schools across the country in the past five years, but remarked the education system is “still short of world class”.

At a regional level, the report found that 92% of primary school pupils in the North East (203,382) are in either Good or Outstanding schools, compared to 75% (110,067) in secondaries which, despite showing improvement, are still lagging behind other parts of the country. Overall, 86% of North East pupils are in Good or Outstanding schools.

New funding to improve schools and drive up standards announced by Justine Greening
Schools Northeast
Education Secretary Justine Greening announced yesterday a new wave of funding meant to address underperformance and “help ensure every child has a good school place”. From September 2017, there will be a £50m a year fund for local authorities to continue to monitor and commission school improvement for low-performing maintained schools.

Government-commissioned review of Tees Valley recommends college mergers and joint venture trust

Several college mergers and a joint venture trust between Tees Valley Combined Authority and Tees Valley Unlimited were amongst the key recommendations made to improve the quality of Further Education in the area, after an area review of Tees Valley FE was published this week. It outlines the needs of the area, the quantity and quality of current provision and key areas for change.

Art history A-level saved from being axed after high-profile campaign   On Thursday the schools standards minister, Nick Gibb, announced in a ministerial written statement that a new A-level in art history was being developed by the Pearson exam board for teaching from next September. Read more >

Making waves: tackling the challenges faced by coastal schools
This full day conference will bring school leaders from across the country together to explore the challenges faced by coastal schools in further detail. The aim of the event is to identify practical solutions to these issues that school leaders can then put into practice on returning to school. CWMT Free Youth Mental Health Conference Durham

Paediatric First Aider
This two-day paediatric first aid course focuses on emergency scenarios that face those looking after young children and infants, including; schools, day nurseries, private nursery schools, pre-schools, before and after school clubs for children in the early years age group, childminders and carers of children at home. The paediatric first aid course meets the Ofsted Early Years and Childcare Register requirements it is part of Safeguarding requirements.
