SATURDAY, DECEMBER 3

22 Days to Christmas Show 

Articles Fine Art Gallery in Stanwell Park will celebrate the opening of its new 22 Days to Christmas Show from noon, with champagne and savouries, and a pop-up jewellery stall by Precious Fusion. Featured artists include painter Ramon Ward-Thompson, Southern Highlands potter Neil Broughton and cartoonist Paul Dorin. A painting by gallery owner John Vander will be drawn at the end of the day. The exhibition will be open Fridays-Sundays, and public holidays, 10am-5pm.

SATURDAY & SUNDAY, DECEMBER 3 & 4

Annual SPAT Panto! 

This year's Stanwell Park Arts Theatre (SPAT) Christmas pantomime is Wish for a Wife, written and directed by local resident Bernadette Le Mesurier. Read 2508's interview with Bernadette on page 16 of the December mag. The panto will be performed at Stanwell Park's CWA Hall this Sat (7.30pm) and Sun (3pm), PLUS Sat Dec 10th (2pm & 7.30pm) and Sun 11th (3pm). Tickets $15 per adult, $10 per child or $45 per family. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 3

Moonlight Movie 

Council's second free Moonlight Movie will be at Berkeley Sports Club. The flick is a sing-a-long favourite Zootopia, an animated buddy cop comedy-adventure. Berkeley Sports Club will organise a sausage sizzle. Gates open at 6pm; movie starts on dark at about 8pm. Bring a picnic, plus a blanket, beanbag or low-rise chairs only. The event is alcohol and glass free, and security guards will be onsite. Visit Council’s website for more.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 4

Helensburgh Tigers Summer Sessions 

Celebrate summer at a great, family-friendly event and support the Helensburgh Tigers rugby league club. Christmas drinks and live music from Pete Jordan on the balcony of the club, this Sunday from 1.30pm to 6.30pm. Bar facilities (BYO alcohol not allowed), BYO nibbles. Entry is free.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 8

Christmas Twilight Market 

Look out for everything from ladies fashion to Rudoph the red-nosed reindeer at the Lions Club's annual Christmas Twilight Market. It's at Helensburgh's Sunrise Nursery on Thursday, December 8, from 4.30-8.30pm. This is always a festive affair, get there early to get a park!

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 11

Benji and the Saltwater Sound System 

Head to the Bombie at Coalcliff Surf Club for live music on the deck from 2-5pm, tickets $15-$20, under-16s free. See Benji and the Saltwater Sound System supported by Red Whyte. More details here.

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 11 

Carols By The Beach 

Tis the season to be singing ... head to Thirroul Beach Reserve  for Carols by the Beach, from 4pm to 8.45pm. This is a family-friendly event with markets, food stalls, kids' activities and plenty of space for a picnic. Kids carols are from 6.30pm (with a special visit by Santa), Carols by Candlelight from 7.30pm, and a fireworks display is scheduled for 8.45pm. Entry is free.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 16 

Sunset Cinema begins 

The 2016/17 season kicks off with The Accountant, an action thriller starring Ben Affleck and rated MA15+. Things look up for those with young ones after this: grab a picnic blanket and take the kids to see Pete's Dragon (PG, Friday, Dec 23) and Storks (G, Thursday, Dec 29). Movies are screened at the Fig Lawn, Wollongong Botanic Garden, gates 7pm, films start on dark.  Find the full Sunset Cinema program and book tickets here. 
SATURDAY, DECEMBER 17 

Carols in the Burgh 

Have a merry time at Carols in the Burgh from 5pm on Saturday, December 17, behind Tradies Helensburgh. This combined churches event showcases great local singing talent and will include the performance of traditional carols and Christmas favourites. Entry is free.

Pick Your Own Stone Fruit 

Teach your children where fruit comes from! Ever wanted to see what a real orchard looks like, or taste fruit fresh from the tree? With Glenbernie Orchard's stone fruit picking experiences, you can! Our local orchard is offering picking tours for the whole family on their 4th generation family farm. Updates and bookings via Facebook. Or pop in and buy fresh fruit at the Apple Shack farm store, open daily.

Helensburgh Playgroup 

Helensburgh Playgroup has only a few sessions left until the school holiday break. It's on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10am-noon. Last session will be on Thursday, December 15. Playgroup returns on Tuesday, January 31, however, stay tuned for a few special sessions that organisers will be running during school holidays to keep the kiddies busy.

Calling artists 

Are you an artist with a vision for our city? Wollongong City Council is keen to hear from you. The Ward Based Arts Grants [formerly called the Large Cultural Grants] support local arts-based development projects and programs that show collaboration between artists and communities in the creation of artworks in each of the city’s wards. There's $22,500 in the pot. Closing date for applications is 14 December. More info on Council's website.
