Victorian Owner Driver Legislation Under Review

The Victorian Government has announced a review of laws governing the employment of Owner Drivers in Victoria.

The obligations of "hirers" and the rights of owner drivers under the Owner Driver & Forestry Contractors Act 2005 are little understood and the Act is not well enforced.  With the assistance of alliance companies, CTAA will be making a submission.

CTAA Port Botany Supply Chain Awareness Workshop Success

CTAA hosted our final Port Supply Chain Workshop for the year in Port Botany on 22 November 2016.

A core group from Transport for NSW, joined by industry participants, enjoyed the experience learning more about how the container transport logistics chain really works in practice, and experiencing the phyiscal facilities first-hand.

We thank NSW Ports for its support throughout 2016.  In NSW alone, CTAA has put close to 100 people through the Workshop.  In a small way, we hope that this has led to a greater understanding and appreciation for this vital sector.

Dates for Workshops in 2017 will be published shortly - general inquiries can be made to CTAA Director, Neil Chambers: neil.chambers@ctaction.com.au

NHVR PBS Vehicle Demonstration - Toowoomba

NHVR hosted a demonstration of Higher Productivity Freight Vehicles in Toowoomba as part of the Australian Local Government Roads & Transport Congress.

Congratulations to ACFS Port Logistics and Woods Transport in Queensland for providing vehicles for the demonstration as an important way to educate local government officials from across Australia about the benefits of HPFV access.

How Not to Pack a Container!

The guys at Interport Cargo in Lytton got a shock when they opened the container doors to unpack a D-8 Bulldozer.

"Never seen anything like it in my life" was the comment - then probably some choice words while they dragged it out!

The Hot Tip from Interport: "Always check your overseas customer's packing arrangements!"

Sound advice really.

Fremantle Truck Productivity Strategy

As part of a re-fresh of its Truck Productivity Strategy, Fremantle Ports has undertaken a survey of container transport operators to gauge changes in industry structure, costs and operating practices over the last five years.  Identified changes include:
  • Cartage rates are being squeezed - 44% of survey respondents reported a moderate to significant decrease in cartage rates, while a further 41% reported no rate increases.
  • Operating costs had increased for 58% of respondents
  • Staging of containers had reduced for "off-port" operators, but the larger, "on-port" operators were staging more, which corresponds with the increase in after hours and weekend operations in the Port of Fremantle.
  • Priority issues with the Transport / Container Terminal interface include Terminal break (change over) times interfering with transport receival and delivery, and the difficulties inherent in the current Vehicle Booking System (VBS) "mad minute".
  • Priority issues for empty container management included the variability of truck turnaround times at Empty Container Parks (ECPs), the ECP capacity impact of empty bulk runs during the day, and difficulties in changing the designated dehire ECP with Shipping Lines.
