I've been sewing like a mad-woman....just finished a big quilt with a deadline, and have three small projects waiting for their binding. How much can I get done before the Christmas rush sets in? Like every year, I plan on just a few handmade presents, knowing full well I'll squeeze in making gift bags and who knows what else that I'm inspired by along the way. Invariably, I'm finishing up on Christmas Eve. Will this year be different? Stick with me and we'll find out!

WHAT'S UP

Baconrific was my big finish since last issue, considering I dished up the Bacon prompt to my Bee Sewcial mates back in July. A puzzle of a quilt like this one takes some simmering, at least for me. Note the three "pancetta" blocks which led to ....
.... my making a similar block for my mate Leanne/she can quilt, who asked for maximalist circle-inspired improv. Click the link for a tutorial to get you started on trying your own Improv Layered Circle.

ROUND-UP

Lately, I've been enamored with big-block quilts, aka one-block quilts, where one single block is the main focus.

Rachel/Snippets of Sweetness created her Swoon Baby Quilt using one 24" block from Thimble Blossoms' Swoon pattern, and surrounding it with a 6" border. [snippetsofsweetness]
Diane/From Blank Pages did similarly with her One Tough Granny to great effect.

Churndash Court from Shayla and Kristy/Sassafras Lane Designs is a 2 1/2" pre-cut strip or scrap friendly quilt, finishing at 36" square. [sassafraslane]

Clever Amy/Diary of a Quilter used left-over squares from another project to make the Half Square Triangles that made up her darling quilt. [diaryofaquilter]
Jeni/In Color Order says her classic Giant Vintage Star Quilt is one of the quickest quilts she's ever made. Her tutorial offers several color layouts, which just adds to the versatility of her design. [jenib320]
At 64", AnneMarie/Gen X QuiltersBella Maiden Quilt using a supersized Old Maid's Puzzle block really makes a statement!
[genxquilters]
Katie/sew katie did's Barn Quilt is one of the first big-block quilts I fell in love with! [sewkatiedid]
And of course, I had to try my hand at creating my own in Good Choice, Sukey, a block that can be pieced in a variety of ways while emphasizing different colors. [aquilterstable]

OFF TOPIC

Words with Friends by Susan/
PatchworknPlay caught my eye this week, with its sweet message interspersed with picture blocks. What a fun finish after a year sewing along with an actually "Spelling Bee!" Hosted by Elizabeth/OccasionalPiece-Quilt, the group was guided by Elizabeth's blog, Quilt Abecedary, where Elizabeth shared her free-form letters - what a great resource. With (hopefully) a word quilt in my future, I've been pinning Word Quilts and Pieced Alphabets as inspiration.

P.S. As often happens, working on a new issue of The Scrap Basket sends me exploring in a direction I didn't anticipate. This time, since I just happened to need a baby quilt to gift, I jumped on Jera/Quilting in the Rain's Quilt As You Go Log Cabin. Talk about a quick, satisfying sew, which is the hallmark of a big-block quilt! Enjoy a pdf of the tutorial while I go bind my little quilt.
